Chapter 9: The Witness Who Changed Everything

I couldn’t sleep.

Not because I was afraid of Sloane.

Not anymore.

I was afraid of the years I had lost.

Years when I thought I was protecting my daughter.

Years when I thought I was building a future.

Years when someone else was quietly rewriting my family’s story.

At 6:00 the next morning, I was standing outside a small coffee shop on the edge of town.

Rachel Evans was sitting inside.

I knew it was her immediately.

She looked older than she should have.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Graham.””

I stopped.

Hearing my name from someone who knew Emma before everything fell apart felt strange.

“How did you get that photo?””

She looked down.

“Because Emma gave it to me.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she was scared.””

I sat across from her.

“Scared of Sloane?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

I waited.

I needed answers.

Not theories.

Not guesses.

The truth.

“Tell me everything.””

Rachel looked out the window.

“Emma met Sloane through a charity event.””

“When?””

“Almost a year before she died.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You just never knew.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Emma had always been private when something bothered her.

She protected people.

Even me.

Especially me.

“What happened?””

Rachel folded her hands.

“At first, Sloane seemed wonderful. She was charming. Helpful. She knew exactly what to say.””

I felt a chill.

“Like she did with me.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Yes.””

She continued.

“She became close to Emma quickly. Too quickly.””

“Why?””

“Because Sloane was interested in your life.””

I stared at her.

“My life?””

“Your money. Your company. Your family.””

My jaw tightened.

“You’re saying she targeted us?””

“I’m saying Emma believed that.””

“Why didn’t Emma tell me?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because she thought she had proof coming.””

“What proof?””

“She was investigating Sloane.””

I froze.

“Investigating?””

Rachel nodded.

“Emma found out Sloane had done something similar before.””

“Similar to what?””

“Getting close to families. Creating problems. Making herself necessary.””

The room felt colder.

“Did Emma know about Maisie?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She was terrified.””

“Of what?””

“That Sloane would eventually make you believe your daughter was the problem.””

I looked away.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Rachel reached into her bag.

She placed an envelope on the table.

“This was Emma’s.””

I stared at it.

“Why do you have it?””

“She asked me to keep it safe.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“Because after Emma died, Sloane told everyone I was unstable.””

She swallowed.

“She convinced people I was obsessed with the idea that something was wrong.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Notes.

And one page with Emma’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I read.

“Graham, if you ever find this, it means I was right to worry.””

I stopped breathing.

The next line was harder.

“Sloane doesn’t want to help us. She wants to replace us.””

My eyes burned.

“She knows how to make people doubt themselves.””

I turned the page.

“She has been asking questions about Maisie. About custody. About what would happen if I wasn’t around.””

My fingers tightened.

There it was.

The proof.

The thing Sloane had spent years hiding.

Rachel watched me silently.

“She knew Emma was onto her.””

“How?””

“Because Emma confronted her.””

“When?””

“The week before the accident.””

I looked up.

“Accident?””

Rachel hesitated.

“That’s what everyone called it.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Emma didn’t believe she was in danger because of a random accident.””

I stared.

“Did she tell you that?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t let Sloane near Maisie.’”

The sentence broke something inside me.

Because I remembered that night.

The night Emma died.

I remembered the call.

The hospital.

The doctor’s face.

The moment my entire world disappeared.

And now I wondered if someone had been standing nearby.

Waiting.

Rachel pushed another document toward me.

“This is the missing witness statement.””

I looked at the signature.

Sloane Whitmore.

My stomach turned.

“What does it say?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“It says Sloane was the last person to see Emma alive.””

I read the page.

The statement claimed Sloane had met Emma briefly.

That Emma was emotional.

That Emma was distracted.

That the accident was unfortunate.

But there was something strange.

A detail nobody else would know.

A detail that only someone close to Emma would know.

The statement mentioned Emma’s necklace.

The necklace I had given her.

The necklace she always wore.

Except that night…

She wasn’t wearing it.

I looked at Rachel.

“She lied.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Graham.””

His voice was urgent.

“We have a problem.””

“What?””

“Sloane filed another motion.””

I closed my eyes.

“What now?””

“She’s requesting emergency custody.””

My blood went cold.

“On what grounds?””

A pause.

Then:

“She claims you are emotionally unstable and that you are putting Maisie at risk.””

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After the chain.

After the lies.

She was still trying to make me look like the danger.

Then Daniel said:

“Graham, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The judge approved an emergency hearing.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow morning.””

I looked at Emma’s letter.

At the proof Sloane feared.

At the truth she buried.

And I knew.

Tomorrow wasn’t just about custody.

It was about exposing everything.

But before I could respond, another message appeared on my phone.

From Sloane.

Only four words.

“I warned you, Graham.””

Underneath was a photo.

A photo of Maisie.

Taken outside the hotel.

May you like

My blood turned cold.

Because Sloane was watching us.
