CHAPTER 2

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The only sound I could hear through the pool-house glass was Emma crying from the ambulance parked beyond the gate.

Daniel stared at Lucas.

Lucas stared back.

Vanessa moved first.

She lunged for the tablet.

Lucas twisted away.

“Don’t touch me!”

One of the security guards caught Vanessa’s arm before she reached him.

She spun around.

“Let go of me!”

Daniel finally found his voice.

“Lucas, give me the tablet.”

Lucas backed away.

“No.”

“I said give it to me.”

“You said to kill Grace.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That isn’t what you heard.”

“I heard you!”

Vanessa suddenly pointed at the pool house.

“She made him do this.”

I almost laughed.

I was locked inside a building thirty feet away.

Daniel turned toward me.

Our eyes met through the glass.

For the first time, he wasn’t angry.

He looked calculating.

That frightened me more.

A siren sounded outside the property.

Then another.

The paramedics must have called the police before anyone could stop them.

Vanessa jerked free from the security guard.

“Daniel, do something.”

He lowered his voice.

“Stop talking.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“Stop. Talking.”

Two police officers entered the backyard with a paramedic.

The first officer looked around.

“Who called about an infant in the pool?”

The security guard nearest the pool pointed at Daniel and Vanessa.

Then he pointed at Lucas.

“There’s a video.”

Daniel snapped his head toward him.

“Cole.”

The guard swallowed.

“I’m sorry, sir.”

Daniel’s expression became deadly.

“You work for me.”

Cole looked at the tablet.

“Not for this.”

The officer approached Lucas carefully.

“Can I see what you have, buddy?”

Vanessa stepped between them.

“He’s eight. He doesn’t understand what he recorded.”

Lucas shouted, “Yes, I do!”

The officer moved Vanessa aside.

“Ma’am, stand back.”

Daniel tried a different approach.

“That recording is being misunderstood.”

“How?”

“It was a private conversation about something unrelated.”

I hit the glass.

“He locked me in here!”

The second officer noticed me.

“Who’s inside?”

“The maid,” Daniel said.

“My name is Grace Miller!”

The officer walked over and unlocked the door.

Cold air hit me when I stepped outside.

I was still dripping wet.

My cheek had begun swelling where Daniel struck me.

The officer looked at it.

“Who hit you?”

I pointed at Daniel.

“He did.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Vanessa whispered something I couldn’t hear.

The officer separated all of us.

I told my story three times.

Once beside the pool.

Once near the ambulance.

Once inside a patrol car where someone gave me a blanket.

Every time I reached the part where Vanessa pushed the stroller, my hands began shaking.

Every time I remembered Emma underwater, I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Lucas sat with another officer near the garden.

He held the tablet as if someone might steal it.

Daniel kept trying to speak to him.

The officers wouldn’t allow it.

Vanessa had stopped crying.

That was what I noticed most.

Her tears disappeared the moment she realized nobody believed her.

She stood with her arms folded and watched the police.

Then an older detective arrived.

She introduced herself as Detective Renee Alvarez.

She had calm eyes and a voice that made people answer questions before realizing how much they had said.

She came to me first.

“Grace, are you injured anywhere besides your face?”

“My hands.”

I showed her the cuts from the stroller buckle.

“And my chest hurts.”

“From the rescue?”

“I think so.”

She nodded toward the house.

“How long have you worked here?”

“Twenty-two months.”

“Any previous problems?”

“Not like this.”

“Like what?”

I looked at Daniel.

“Like trying to kill a baby.”

Alvarez didn’t react.

“Have you ever heard them discuss harming Emma?”

“No.”

“Have you ever seen anything that worried you?”

The question made me pause.

Small memories came back.

Emma’s bottle smelling strange one night.

A loose screw on her changing table.

A gas burner left on after Vanessa said I had forgotten it.

At the time, each incident had felt careless.

Now they didn’t.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Alvarez noticed immediately.

“What?”

“I didn’t understand them before.”

“Tell me.”

I did.

She wrote everything down.

Then she asked the question I was afraid of.

“Why would they want to hurt their own daughter?”

“I don’t know.”

Across the yard, Daniel suddenly raised his voice.

“This is ridiculous. That audio could have been recorded at any time.”

Lucas looked at him.

“It was today.”

Daniel pointed toward the tablet.

“You don’t know that.”

Lucas’s face crumpled.

“I was upstairs when you told Mom to do it.”

Vanessa snapped, “Lucas!”

He flinched.

I stood up.

“Don’t yell at him.”

Alvarez put one hand out.

“Stay here, Grace.”

I stopped.

Lucas looked toward me.

His eyes were full of tears.

“Grace?”

“I’m here.”

“Is Emma going to die?”

The question broke something inside me.

“No.”

I forced my voice steady.

“She was crying. That’s good. The doctors are taking care of her.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

For one moment, she almost looked like a mother.

Then Daniel whispered something to her.

The softness vanished.

Detective Alvarez took the tablet.

She called a digital evidence technician.

Another officer photographed the stroller.

Then they photographed my face.

Daniel’s attorney arrived before they finished.

Of course he did.

The man walked into the backyard in a dark suit, carrying himself like he owned the police department.

His name was Richard Vale.

I had seen him at family dinners.

Daniel introduced him as the man who “made problems disappear.”

Vale spoke quietly to Daniel.

Then to Vanessa.

Then he approached Alvarez.

“My clients will cooperate, but I’m instructing them not to answer additional questions tonight.”

Alvarez glanced at him.

“That’s their right.”

“They will also be accompanying their daughter to the hospital.”

“That part isn’t up to you.”

Vale’s smile disappeared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means child services has been contacted.”

Vanessa exploded.

“You are not taking my children!”

Lucas stepped closer to the officer beside him.

That told me everything.

Vanessa saw it too.

Her face changed.

“Lucas.”

He looked away.

She moved toward him.

The officer blocked her.

“Ma’am.”

“He is my son.”

“Right now, he stays with us.”

Vanessa began screaming.

Daniel didn’t.

He watched Lucas with an expression I couldn’t read.

Then he looked at me.

His voice was quiet.

“You have no idea what you just destroyed.”

I stared back.

“I didn’t destroy anything.”

I nodded toward his daughter’s empty stroller floating in the pool.

“You did.”

Detective Alvarez heard him.

She stepped between us.

“Mr. Hale, you’re done speaking to her.”

Vale pulled Daniel away.

An hour later, child services placed Lucas in emergency protective care.

Emma remained at the hospital under police watch.

Vanessa and Daniel were told they couldn’t be alone with either child.

I thought that meant I could finally breathe.

Then Alvarez walked me toward the front gate.

“Do you have somewhere safe to stay tonight?”

“My apartment.”

She studied me.

“Does Daniel know the address?”

“Yes.”

“Does Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

I understood her concern.

“I’ll stay with a friend.”

“Good.”

She handed me her card.

“Call me if either of them contacts you.”

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated.

The screen had barely survived the pool.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED UNDERWATER.

I showed it to Alvarez.

Her expression changed.

“Don’t delete that.”

Another message arrived.

THIS TIME THERE WON’T BE A CAMERA.

I looked toward the mansion.

May you like

Daniel and Vanessa were standing behind an upstairs window.

Both of them were watching me.
