Chapter 8: The Family Secret

Aunt Linda stood in the doorway like she belonged there.

Like nothing was wrong.

Like she hadn’t just walked into a moment she was never supposed to see.

She smiled.

“Emily.””

I stared at her.

“What are you doing here?””

Her eyes moved toward my mother.

Then toward the folder on the table.

For a split second, her smile disappeared.

Then it returned.

“I came to check on your mother.””

My mother stepped back.

That tiny movement told me more than words could.

She was afraid of Linda.

“Mom?”” I whispered.

Linda noticed.

And immediately changed her tone.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

She walked closer.

“Your mother has been confused lately.””

My stomach tightened.

“She’s been under a lot of stress.””

My mother gripped the folder.

“Don’t.””

Linda stopped.

“What?””

“Don’t talk about me like I’m not here.””

The room went silent.

Because I had never heard my mother speak to Linda that way.

Linda sighed.

“I’m only trying to help.””

My mother laughed quietly.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

Linda looked uncomfortable.

“With everything.””

I stepped between them.

“Why did you tell Mom not to give me this?””

Linda looked at the envelope.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“What is that?””

I held it up.

“You tell me.””

Linda became very still.

“Where did you get that?””

My mother answered.

“She kept it.””

Linda looked at her.

“You shouldn’t have.””

The words made my heart pound.

“You shouldn’t have what?””

Linda looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Emily, your mother is confused. She doesn’t understand what she’s holding.””

My mother’s face tightened.

“I understand enough.””

Linda shook her head.

“This is exactly what I was worried about.””

I looked at her.

“What were you worried about?””

“That you would believe things that aren’t true.””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could respond, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?””

“I’m here.””

His voice sounded tense.

“Are you with your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Is anyone else there?””

I looked at Linda.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Who?””

I didn’t take my eyes off her.

“My aunt.””

The silence on the phone was immediate.

Then Daniel said:

“Emily, leave.””

My heart jumped.

“What?””

“Take your mother and leave.””

Linda noticed my expression.

“What did he say?””

I ignored her.

“Daniel, why?””

“Because I searched your mother’s old records.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“And?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“Your aunt wasn’t just visiting your mother.””

I looked at Linda.

“She was involved in her care.””

The room seemed to spin.

“What do you mean?””

“She was listed as an emergency contact.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked confused.

“I never put her there.””

Daniel continued.

“Emily, I found another thing.””

“What?””

“A document from six months ago.””

My breathing stopped.

“What document?””

“A request for financial management assistance.””

I froze.

“What?””

Linda watched me carefully.

Like she was waiting.

“Who signed it?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Your mother’s name is on it.””

My eyes moved to my mother.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became urgent.

“Emily, listen to me.””

“What?””

“Your mother may have signed it.””

I swallowed.

“May have?””

“Because the signature doesn’t look like hers.””

The room went silent.

Linda suddenly stepped forward.

“Give me that phone.””

I moved back.

“No.””

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not sadness.

Something else.

Control.

“Emily.””

Her voice became cold.

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain it.””

She said nothing.

And that silence told me everything.

Because for the first time…

Linda wasn’t acting like someone protecting my mother.

She was acting like someone who had been caught.

Then my mother whispered something that made my entire body freeze.

“Emily…”

I turned.

She was staring at Linda.

“I remember now.””

My breath caught.

“Remember what?””

My mother pointed at Linda with a trembling hand.

“The day my papers disappeared.””

Linda’s face went pale.

My mother’s voice shook.

“She wasn’t helping me.””

A long silence filled the room.

May you like

Then my mother said:

“She was preparing to take everything.””
