Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s First Family

Tom sat at my kitchen table.

Nobody touched the fresh pizza anymore.

It had gone cold.

That felt appropriate.

“What did they do?”

Tom looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the floor.

“Tell him,” he said.

Vanessa whispered, “Please.”

Tom’s jaw tightened.

“You spent five years telling my children I abandoned them.”

“I never said abandoned.”

“Then explain why Chloe thought I didn’t want her.”

Chloe began crying again.

Tom immediately softened.

“Sweetheart, I’m not angry at you.”

“I thought you didn’t call.”

“I did.”

She looked at Vanessa.

“Mom said you forgot.”

Tom closed his eyes.

Logan’s face turned red.

“You lied about Dad too?”

Vanessa began sobbing.

“I was angry.”

Tom laughed bitterly.

“There’s always a reason with you.”

I leaned forward.

“What happened financially?”

Tom looked at me.

“Eight years ago, when our marriage was ending, Barbara convinced Vanessa that I was hiding money.”

“I thought you were,” Vanessa whispered.

“So they started ‘protecting’ her.”

He made quotation marks with his fingers.

“They applied for credit cards using information from our tax returns.”

“How much?”

“About fourteen thousand.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“Was anyone charged?”

Tom shook his head.

“I didn’t report it.”

“Why?”

He looked at Logan and Chloe.

“They were little.”

His voice softened.

“I thought if Vanessa got arrested, they’d suffer.”

Vanessa looked at him through tears.

Tom continued.

“I made her repay it in the divorce settlement.”

“And Barbara?”

“She denied everything.”

Of course.

Tom leaned back.

“Then there was the custody issue.”

Vanessa stood.

“Don’t.”

Tom looked at her.

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“You don’t get to decide which truth survives anymore.”

Vanessa sat back down.

Tom looked at me.

“When I asked for equal parenting time, Barbara told Vanessa to make the kids afraid of my house.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“She kept telling them my neighborhood was dangerous.”

Logan looked confused.

“You lived near the park.”

Tom gave him a sad smile.

“I still do.”

Chloe whispered, “Mom said there were bad people there.”

Tom’s face tightened.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I was scared.”

“You were angry,” Tom said.

He looked back at me.

“Eventually the court ordered more time. Things improved.”

“Then why don’t they see you much now?”

Tom looked at Vanessa.

“She controls most scheduling.”

“That isn’t true.”

“I have seventeen emails from this year alone where you canceled weekends.”

“You travel.”

“Twice.”

Vanessa went silent.

I felt sick.

Different family.

Same pattern.

Make someone look dangerous.

Control the story.

Separate children from the person they loved.

Only this time, Maya had been the target.

I looked at Logan.

“You gave me the key because you knew something was wrong.”

He nodded.

“How long did you have it?”

“Two weeks.”

“Why didn’t you show me sooner?”

His eyes filled.

“Mom said if you found out, we’d lose the house.”

My heart broke for him too.

Vanessa had made all three children responsible for protecting adult secrets.

I crouched beside him.

“You didn’t cause this.”

He wiped his eyes.

“I should’ve told you.”

“You told me when you were ready.”

“But Maya was hungry.”

Maya looked at him.

“You brought me crackers.”

Logan shook his head.

“Only once.”

“That helped.”

He started crying.

Maya walked over and hugged him.

For a moment, every adult in the room stopped talking.

Two children were comforting each other because the adults had failed them.

I would never forget that image.

Tom cleared his throat.

“I’m taking Logan and Chloe tonight.”

Vanessa stood.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Unless they tell me they don’t want to.”

She turned toward the children.

“Guys?”

Chloe looked down.

Logan looked at Tom.

“I want to go with Dad.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

Chloe whispered, “Me too.”

She covered her mouth.

“I’m your mother.”

Chloe started crying again.

“I know.”

Vanessa stepped toward her.

Chloe stepped backward.

That was enough.

Vanessa froze.

Tom quietly gathered their coats.

He didn’t celebrate.

He didn’t attack Vanessa.

He just helped his children.

I respected him for that.

Before leaving, Logan came to me.

“Ethan?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you mad at me?”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“Even though I knew about the key?”

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“You’re twelve.”

He nodded.

“You should never have been asked to keep that secret.”

His eyes filled.

“Is Maya going to be okay?”

I looked toward my daughter.

Rachel was helping her pack.

“Yes.”

Then I added, “Because you helped her.”

Logan hugged me.

I wasn’t prepared for it.

I hugged him back.

“You’re a good kid.”

He whispered, “Can I still see you?”

That nearly broke me.

“As long as your dad is okay with it.”

Tom heard.

He nodded.

“You’re family to them too.”

Vanessa began crying harder.

Nobody said anything.

Tom left with Logan and Chloe.

Rachel took Maya to her apartment for the night after Maya asked me to stay behind.

“Fix things, Daddy.”

I hugged her.

“I’ll handle the grown-up stuff.”

“Are you coming tomorrow?”

“First thing.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

When everyone was gone, the house felt enormous.

Vanessa and I stood in the living room.

Just us.

The family pictures on the wall suddenly felt like evidence from another life.

She sat on the couch.

“I ruined everything.”

I didn’t answer.

“Ethan.”

“What?”

“I need help.”

“You need accountability.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She looked up.

“Yes.”

I sat across from her.

“Why Maya?”

Her face crumpled.

“I was jealous.”

It was ugly.

But honest.

“Of a child?”

“Of what she represented.”

“Sarah.”

She nodded.

“I knew you loved me.”

I waited.

“But sometimes I felt like there were three people in our marriage.”

“That was never Maya’s fault.”

“I know.”

“You punished a little girl because her mother died.”

Vanessa sobbed.

Hearing it spoken plainly destroyed whatever excuse she had left.

“I’m sorry.”

“That doesn’t feed her.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t erase what you told her.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t return her money.”

“I’ll repay everything.”

“You will.”

She looked frightened.

I continued.

“Because tomorrow I’m filing a police report.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“You’d do that?”

“Yes.”

“I’m your wife.”

I looked at her.

“And Maya is my daughter.”

Silence.

“You made me choose when there never should have been a choice.”

She closed her eyes.

I gathered the hidden phone, the beneficiary form, and the bank records.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Mr. Walker?”

“Yes.”

“This is Officer Daniel Ruiz. Your bank fraud department contacted our financial crimes unit.”

Vanessa stared at me.

The officer continued.

“We need to discuss the equity loan.”

“Okay.”

“There’s been a development.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind?”

“The receiving bank flagged an attempted cashier’s check withdrawal fifteen minutes ago.”

I already knew.

“Who tried to withdraw it?”

Officer Ruiz paused.

“Barbara Dawson.”

I looked directly at Vanessa.

“And, Mr. Walker?”

“Yes?”

“She wasn’t alone.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

May you like

“Who was with her?”

“A man carrying a copy of your driver’s license.”
