Chapter 6: The Man From Claire’s Past

I stared at my phone for almost a full minute after the call ended.

I wanted to believe it was a threat from someone trying to scare me.

A random person.

A cruel joke.

Anything.

But one detail made that impossible.

He knew about the basement.

He knew I had found the room.

I immediately called the number back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then I received a message.

“Some secrets are buried for a reason.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not fear.

Anger.

Because this was no longer just about Claire.

It was about everyone who had helped her.

Everyone who watched my daughter suffer.

I drove straight to Claire’s sister’s house.

Her older sister, Rachel, had always defended Claire.

Whenever Claire and I argued, Rachel was the person who told me I needed to be more patient.

I knocked.

She opened the door.

The moment she saw my face, her expression changed.

“David.””

“We need to talk.””

She looked nervous.

“About what?””

I held up my phone.

“About the person who called me.””

Her eyes moved away.

That was enough.

“You know who it was.””

Rachel sighed.

“Come inside.””

I walked into her living room.

She closed the door.

“David, I need you to understand something.””

“I’m done understanding.””

My voice surprised even me.

“My daughter was isolated in my own house.””

Rachel looked down.

“I didn’t know it was that bad.””

“You knew something.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“I knew Claire had problems.””

I stared at her.

“What problems?””

Rachel sat down.

“She has always needed control.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“She grew up in a difficult home.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone has a past, Rachel. That doesn’t excuse what she did.””

Rachel looked at me.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised me.

Then she continued.

“But there’s something you need to know.””

I waited.

“Claire wasn’t always like this.””

“What happened?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She was engaged before you.””

I frowned.

“Engaged?””

“Yes.””

“To who?””

Rachel looked toward the window.

“His name was Thomas.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“What happened?””

“He disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“Disappeared?””

Rachel nodded.

“After their relationship ended.””

“Why?””

“That’s what nobody knows.””

My stomach tightened.

“Does Claire know where he is?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

And again, the silence told me everything.

Before I could ask more, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

She quickly declined the call.

“Nobody.””

I almost smiled.

“Everyone says that when they’re hiding something.””

Rachel looked defeated.

“David, you need to stop digging.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re going to find.””

I looked at her.

“That’s exactly why I have to continue.””

When I left Rachel’s house, I didn’t go home.

I went to the police station.

I wasn’t ready to make accusations.

I needed facts.

A detective named Mark Reynolds listened while I explained everything.

The photos.

The locked rooms.

The notebook.

The phone call.

When I finished, he leaned back.

“Mr. Carter, do you have evidence of physical harm?””

“No.””

“Threats?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“But you believe there is ongoing emotional abuse?””

“Yes.””

Detective Reynolds looked through the documents I brought.

“Have you checked the house records?””

“What records?””

“Renovation permits.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if that basement room existed before you bought the house, there may be information.””

I immediately understood.

The room.

The locked door.

Claire’s connection.

I drove home and searched through the old paperwork.

Hours passed.

Then I found it.

A renovation document from years earlier.

Before I owned the house.

The previous owner had added a hidden storage area.

The contractor’s name was listed.

I stared at the signature.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the name.

Thomas Walker.

The man Rachel said disappeared.

The man who had helped Claire hide something.

I grabbed my phone.

I searched for the number that called me.

Nothing.

Then I looked at the document again.

At the bottom was one final note.

“Additional security installation requested by Claire Bennett.””

My heart stopped.

Claire had installed the locks.

Claire had created the hidden rooms.

And she had done it before she ever met me.

Then my phone rang.

This time, the caller ID appeared.

Not unknown.

Not hidden.

A name.

Thomas Walker.

I answered.

There was silence on the other end.

Then a man whispered:

“David, if you want to protect your daughter…”

May you like

A pause.

“…you need to hear what Claire did before she became your wife.””
