[CHAPTER 10]

Every instinct in me screamed to go.
Detective Bennett said no.
“She wants you emotional.”
“She has Eleanor.”
“And she wants Sophie.”
“I won't bring Sophie.”
“Good.”
“But we can't leave Eleanor.”
“We won't.”
The photograph contained clues.
A concrete floor.
Rust on a metal beam.
A blue shipping label.
My security team and police analysts worked through the night.
Sophie knew none of it.
I refused to let Vanessa use fear to control another evening.
We ate dinner.
Sophie chose grilled cheese.
Then we watched a cartoon.
Halfway through, she climbed beside me and put her head on my shoulder.
I barely breathed.
Every normal moment felt sacred now.
At 9:12, Bennett called.
“We identified the label.”
I moved into the hallway.
“Where?”
“A storage facility in Bridgeport.”
“Is she there?”
“Teams are moving.”
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“Maya.”
“She asked for Sophie. If she sees you, she may believe you brought her.”
“Then use that.”
Silence.
“You want to act as bait?”
“If it gets Eleanor out.”
“You are not trained.”
“I don't need to be.”
“You absolutely do.”
I leaned against the wall.
“Vanessa built this around me. She wants me reacting.”
“Yes.”
“Then give her the reaction you control.”
Bennett hated the idea.
Her commander hated it more.
But the location had limited entry points.
Vanessa had cameras.
A police assault could trigger violence before they reached Eleanor.
So we built a plan.
Emily stayed with Sophie.
Before I left, Sophie saw my coat.
“Where are you going?”
I crouched.
“To help someone.”
“Miss Vanessa?”
I hated how quickly she understood.
“Police are helping.”
“Are you coming back?”
“Yes.”
“Promise?”
I stopped.
Dr. Patel's warning.
Don't promise what you can't control.
I took Sophie's hands.
“I plan to come back.”
Her eyes filled.
“That isn't a promise.”
“No.”
She looked hurt.
I pulled her close.
“But I love you. And I'm going to be careful.”
She whispered, “I don't want you to go to heaven too.”
My heart broke.
I kissed her forehead.
“I want to stay right here with you for a very long time.”
At 10:03, I arrived near the storage facility wearing a wire.
Police surrounded the area beyond Vanessa's likely sight lines.
I called the number she gave me.
She answered instantly.
“Richard.”
Hearing her voice made my skin crawl.
“Where's Eleanor?”
“Where's Sophie?”
“Safe.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You always did disappoint me when you finally started thinking.”
“I brought what you asked for.”
A pause.
“Liar.”
My heart pounded.
“I brought her.”
“Let me hear her.”
I looked at Bennett.
We had prepared audio from an old video of Sophie saying, “Daddy?”
I hated using it.
But I pressed play.
Vanessa went silent.
Then breathed, “Good.”
“Let Eleanor go.”
“Come inside.”
“No.”
“Then she dies.”
I closed my eyes.
“Vanessa.”
“Yes?”
“Claire knew what you were.”
Silence.
I continued.
“She saw you before I did.”
“You know nothing about Claire.”
“I know she wasn't afraid of you.”
Vanessa's breathing changed.
“She was arrogant.”
“She was right.”
“About what?”
“That you needed frightened people around you to feel powerful.”
Bennett gestured for me to continue.
I hated provoking Vanessa.
But we needed her talking.
Vanessa laughed.
“Claire thought she was untouchable because she married money.”
“Claire never cared about my money.”
“That's what wealthy men tell themselves.”
“What happened that night?”
Silence.
“Did you follow her?”
“You know I did.”
My heart stopped.
Bennett's eyes sharpened.
“Why?”
“To scare her.”
“Did you hit her car?”
A long pause.
Then Vanessa said, “She should have stopped.”
“Did you hit her car?”
“She chose to fight.”
I forced my voice steady.
“Did you kill my wife?”
“You left her alone too.”
That cut.
She knew it would.
“I asked a question.”
“And I'm answering. You leave women alone, Richard. Then you become surprised when something happens.”
My hand shook.
I remembered Sophie's face beside the dog bowl.
Bennett signaled.
Stay calm.
I breathed.
“Where is Eleanor?”
“Inside.”
“Let me see her.”
A light switched on in a second-floor window.
Eleanor sat tied to a chair.
Vanessa stood behind her.
I could barely see them.
“Now bring Sophie.”
“No.”
Vanessa pressed something against Eleanor's neck.
A knife.
My stomach twisted.
“Bring her.”
“No.”
“Then watch.”
“Vanessa!”
She laughed.
And suddenly the building lights died.
Police had cut external power.
Vanessa screamed into the phone.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“You lied!”
Gunshots sounded.
Not from police.
From inside.
Bennett shouted.
Teams moved.
I was pulled behind an armored vehicle.
I fought the officer holding me.
“Eleanor!”
“Stay down!”
More shouting.
Glass broke.
Then silence.
Thirty seconds.
A minute.
Two.
Longest minutes of my life.
Finally Bennett's radio crackled.
“Hostage secured.”
I closed my eyes.
“Suspect?”
Another pause.
“Suspect fled rear stairwell.”
I swore.
Again.
Vanessa had escaped.
But Eleanor was alive.
Police found a tunnel-like maintenance passage connecting the facility to an adjacent warehouse.
Vanessa had prepared the location.
She always prepared.
Eleanor was taken to the hospital with a cut on her shoulder and signs of dehydration.
Before the ambulance left, she asked to see me.
I climbed inside.
She looked exhausted.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
“You survived.”
“She wanted Sophie.”
“I know.”
Eleanor grabbed my wrist.
“No. You don't understand.”
“What?”
“She doesn't want the money anymore.”
My blood chilled.
“What does she want?”
“To hurt you.”
“I know.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“She said the money was Graham's dream.”
“Then what is hers?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“She wants you to understand what Claire felt.”
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
“She wants you to lose Sophie.”
The words barely registered.
“Lose her how?”
Eleanor looked toward the ambulance doors.
“She said she doesn't need custody anymore.”
My heart stopped.
“She only needs one moment when no one is watching.”
I returned home before dawn.
Sophie was asleep.
I sat beside her bed.
Winston lifted his head, recognized me and lay back down.
I touched Sophie's hair.
She opened her eyes.
“Daddy?”
“I'm back.”
She immediately reached for me.
I held her.
“Did you help the person?”
“Yes.”
“Is she okay?”
“She will be.”
Sophie smiled sleepily.
“Good.”
Then she fell asleep against me.
I stayed there until sunrise.
Vanessa had changed her goal.
That meant everything had changed.
She no longer wanted to build a family around herself.
May you like
She wanted to destroy mine.
And for the first time, I understood that keeping Sophie safe might mean leaving the only home she had ever known.
