Chapter 6: The Conversation That Changed Everything

I met Olivia at a small coffee shop near her apartment the next afternoon.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to.

I arrived early and sat in the corner.

I watched people walk by.

Parents holding their children’s hands.

Families laughing.

Normal moments.

Things I wanted for Lily.

A few minutes later, Olivia walked in.

She looked different.

Less angry.

More cautious.

She sat across from me.

“You called my lawyer?””

I blinked.

“No.””

She stared.

“Don’t lie.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then how does someone already know?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

She looked away.

That reaction told me she had already built a story in her mind.

A story where I was the enemy.

“Marcus, this has gone too far.””

I leaned forward.

“What has?””

“You checking my spending. Talking to Lily. Going to the school.””

I frowned.

“Talking to my daughter is a problem now?””

“That’s not what I said.””

“It’s what you’re implying.””

She sighed.

“I’m trying to create a stable environment for her.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You keep saying stability.””

“Yes.””

“But you’re the one making her afraid.””

Her expression hardened.

“Careful.””

“Careful with what?””

“You don’t know everything.””

I studied her.

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

I waited.

Finally, she said:

“There are things happening in my life that you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked down at her coffee.

“I’m moving.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“Moving where?””

“Somewhere better.””

“For Lily?””

“For us.””

I nodded slowly.

“And what does that have to do with removing me from school records?””

She didn’t answer.

“Olivia.””

She looked up.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

Her face softened.

“I’m trying to rebuild my life.””

“And Lily?””

“She’ll come with me.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

She looked away.

“Another state.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“You were planning to move with my daughter?””

“I’m her mother.””

“And I’m her father.””

“You’ll still be able to call.””

I stared at her.

Call.

Like I was some distant relative.

Like being a father could happen through a phone.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“No?””

“No.””

I kept my voice calm.

“You don’t get to make a decision that changes Lily’s entire life without talking to me.””

She leaned back.

“You think you can stop me?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because that was the moment I understood something.

Olivia wasn’t asking for permission.

She was informing me.

“I’m not trying to control you,” I said.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“But I will fight for my daughter.””

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

“You would really do that?””

I nodded.

“Absolutely.””

She looked down.

Then whispered:

“You’re making me choose.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made a choice when you decided Lily should carry your secrets.””

She looked angry again.

“You’re acting like I’m a bad mother.””

“I’m saying you’re making decisions that hurt our daughter.””

She stood up.

“Then maybe you should take this to court.””

The words hung between us.

I didn’t move.

Because I never wanted court.

I wanted cooperation.

I wanted two parents who could put their child first.

But Olivia had just made something clear.

She wasn’t interested in cooperation.

She was interested in winning.

Before leaving, she looked back at me.

“You’re going to regret this.””

I watched her walk away.

And for the first time in months…

I wasn’t confused.

I wasn’t hoping things would magically get better.

I knew what I had to do.

That evening, I picked Lily up.

We sat on the couch eating pizza and watching her favorite movie.

She laughed at the funny parts.

She smiled.

For a moment, she was just a kid again.

Then during a quiet scene, she looked at me.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you going somewhere?””

My heart broke.

“Why would you ask that?””

She shrugged.

“Mommy said things might change.””

I turned toward her.

“Lily, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“I’m not leaving.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Promise?””

I held her hand.

“I promise I will always be your dad.””

She nodded.

But before I could say anything else, my phone buzzed.

It was an email notification.

From my attorney.

Subject line:

*Important Evidence Regarding Olivia Hayes*

I opened it.

And the first attachment made me stop breathing.

Because it wasn’t just about the money.

It wasn’t just about school records.

May you like

It was proof that someone had been helping Olivia hide something about Lily for months.

And the name on the document was someone I never expected.
