Chapter 3: The First Question

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Sarah climbed inside with Nathan while Margaret stayed behind with Ellie.

The siren began almost immediately.

Inside the ambulance, everything smelled of disinfectant and plastic. A monitor beeped beside Nathan's stretcher as the paramedics continued checking his condition.

Sarah sat near his feet, gripping the edge of the seat.

“Is he going to survive?””

The paramedic glanced at her.

“We're doing everything we can. Right now, we need to get him evaluated at the hospital.””

“But he was pronounced dead.””

The paramedic paused.

“Do you know where he was treated?””

“St. Mary's Medical Center.””

“Do you have his discharge paperwork or medical records?””

Sarah shook her head.

“He never came home.””

The paramedic looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Sarah swallowed.

“My husband was admitted after collapsing at work. He was unconscious when they brought him in. The hospital called me two days later.””

She stopped.

The memory returned with painful clarity.

A doctor standing in a quiet hospital room.

A serious expression.

A carefully chosen explanation.

And then the sentence that had destroyed her world.

Your husband didn't make it.

The paramedic looked back at Nathan.

“Let's focus on getting him stable first.””

Sarah nodded.

Nathan's eyes were half-open.

His breathing was still shallow.

She leaned forward.

“Nathan, can you hear me?””

His eyes shifted toward her.

She reached for his hand.

“Ellie is okay. She's with your mother.””

His fingers twitched.

“She's wearing the red dress you bought her.””

Nathan blinked slowly.

Sarah gave a broken laugh.

“You should have seen her this morning. She insisted on wearing it because she thought you'd like it.””

A tear rolled down Nathan's temple.

Sarah wiped it away with her thumb.

“Please stay with me.””

The ambulance turned sharply.

Nathan's eyes suddenly widened.

His hand tightened around Sarah's.

She startled.

“What is it?””

He tried to speak.

“Sa...””

“I'm listening.””

His lips moved again.

“Don't...””

Sarah leaned closer.

“Don't what?””

His breathing became uneven.

The paramedic immediately adjusted his position.

“Sir, stay calm. You're safe.””

Nathan's eyes remained fixed on Sarah.

“Don't... let...””

His voice disappeared.

Sarah stared at him.

“Don't let what?””

But Nathan's eyes slowly closed again.

“Nathan?””

She squeezed his hand.

“Nathan, open your eyes.””

The paramedic checked him.

“He's still breathing. Give him a moment.””

Sarah sat back, trembling.

She had heard him say three words.

Not home.

Don't let.

She didn't know what they meant.

And she was beginning to fear that whatever Nathan remembered was more frightening than anything she could imagine.

At the hospital, a team was waiting.

The ambulance doors opened, and Nathan was rushed through the emergency entrance.

Sarah followed until a nurse stopped her outside the treatment area.

“I'm his wife.””

“I understand. We need to examine him.””

“Please, I need to stay with him.””

The nurse gave her a sympathetic look.

“We'll update you as soon as we can.””

The doors closed.

Sarah stood alone in the corridor.

Her black funeral dress was wrinkled. A white rose petal was stuck to the sleeve.

She looked down at it.

Then she began to cry.

Not quietly.

Not politely.

She covered her mouth with both hands, trying to contain the sobs that had been building since the church.

A receptionist approached.

“Ma'am? Would you like some water?””

Sarah shook her head.

“My husband was in a coffin.””

The receptionist didn't know what to say.

“He was in his coffin,” Sarah repeated.

“And then he opened his eyes.””

The woman gently guided her toward a chair.

“Please sit down.””

Sarah lowered herself onto it.

Her phone began ringing.

Margaret.

She answered immediately.

“Is Ellie okay?””

“Yes,” Margaret said, her voice shaking.

“She's sitting beside me. She keeps asking when Nathan is coming back.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“What do I tell her?””

“Tell her Daddy is getting help.””

A pause followed.

Then Margaret spoke again.

“Sarah, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did Nathan say anything?””

Sarah stared at the hospital doors.

“He said he didn't want to go home.””

Margaret went silent.

“Did he explain why?””

“No. He tried to say something else, but he couldn't.””

Sarah rubbed her forehead.

“He looked terrified, Margaret.””

Her mother-in-law began crying again.

“Maybe he was confused.””

“Maybe.””

But Sarah didn't sound convinced.

Nearly an hour later, a doctor finally came out.

Sarah stood so quickly that her chair scraped against the floor.

“Doctor?””

The doctor approached her.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes. How is my husband?””

“His vital signs are being monitored. He's extremely weak, and we're continuing our evaluation.””

“Is he conscious?””

“He has responded to some verbal stimulation.””

Sarah grabbed the doctor's sleeve.

“Can I see him?””

The doctor nodded.

“For a few minutes. Please keep your voice calm. He needs rest.””

Sarah followed him into the room.

Nathan lay beneath a white hospital blanket.

The dark funeral suit was gone. His face looked pale against the pillow, and several medical monitors surrounded the bed.

But his chest was moving.

He was breathing.

Sarah approached slowly.

“Hi, baby.””

Nathan's eyelids fluttered.

She reached for his hand.

“It's me.””

His eyes opened.

This time, they didn't wander around the room.

They found her immediately.

Sarah smiled through her tears.

“I'm here.””

Nathan stared at her for several seconds.

Then his gaze moved toward the doorway.

He looked back at Sarah.

His expression tightened.

“Ellie?””

Sarah nodded.

“She's with your mom.””

Nathan swallowed painfully.

“Safe?””

The single word came out barely above a whisper.

Sarah frowned.

“Yes. She's safe.””

Nathan closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he opened them again.

His fingers moved against hers.

“Sarah...””

“I'm listening.””

He stared at her with an intensity that frightened her.

“Listen.””

She leaned closer.

“Okay.””

Nathan struggled to draw another breath.

Then he whispered something that made Sarah's smile disappear.

“Don't let them...””

His voice broke.

“Don't let them tell you I'm dead.””

Sarah went completely still.

She looked at her husband.

Then at the doctor.

Then back at Nathan.

“But, Nathan,” she whispered, “they already did.””

His eyes filled with tears.

He tightened his grip around her fingers.

May you like

And then he asked the question Sarah would never forget.

“Who signed it?””
