Chapter 7: The Girl Who Vanished Before Lily

I couldn’t stop looking at Emma’s picture.

A little girl I had never met.

A child whose existence my wife had erased from our lives.

I stared at the screen until my eyes burned.

Nine years.

That was how long Melissa had carried a secret.

Nine years since another little girl disappeared.

Nine years since nobody thought to ask why.

My hands were shaking when I called Detective Mitchell.

She answered quickly.

“Mr. Carter?””

“I found something.””

The tone of my voice must have told her this was different.

“What happened?””

“I know about Emma.””

There was silence.

A long, heavy silence.

Then:

“How do you know that name?””

I looked at the missing child report.

“Because she was Melissa’s daughter.””

Detective Mitchell didn’t respond immediately.

Finally, she said:

“Where did you find that information?””

“Online records.””

Another pause.

“Daniel, listen carefully.””

Her voice became serious.

“Do not confront your wife about this.””

“Why?””

“Because we don’t know what happened yet.””

“She had another daughter who disappeared.””

“I know.””

My heart stopped.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because it’s complicated.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“It’s not complicated. My wife had a child who vanished.””

Detective Mitchell sighed.

“Daniel, Emma’s case was investigated.””

“And?””

“And there was never enough evidence to charge anyone.””

I looked at the photo again.

“Melissa was the last person seen with her.””

“Yes.””

“Then how is that not enough?””

“Because being the last person seen with someone does not automatically mean someone is responsible.””

I hated that she was right.

But I also hated that Melissa had lived normally for eleven years.

She had gotten married.

Had another child.

Built an online reputation.

And nobody had ever asked what happened to Emma.

“Detective,” I said quietly.

“Yes?””

“Could this be connected to Lily?””

The silence answered before she did.

“We don’t know.””

“But you think it could be.””

“I think we need to investigate.””

That was not the answer I wanted.

But it was the only honest one.

After we hung up, I sat back down.

Rachel watched me.

“She knows about Emma?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

“That there wasn’t enough evidence.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Then we need more.””

I looked at her.

“How do we find more?””

Rachel closed the laptop.

“We find the person who called you.””

The woman.

The only person who seemed to know the truth.

But there was one problem.

She didn’t call again.

Not that day.

Not the next morning.

Not the next night.

And every hour she stayed silent, I became more afraid.

Because if Melissa knew someone was talking…

what would she do?

The custody hearing continued two days later.

This time, Melissa arrived with even more support.

The crowd outside had doubled.

People shouted her name.

A reporter asked:

“Mrs. Carter, do you believe your husband is dangerous?””

Melissa stopped.

Looked at the cameras.

And said softly:

“I just want my daughter home.””

That was it.

Seven words.

But it was enough.

The internet exploded again.

People shared the clip.

Thousands of comments.

Thousands of strangers who had never met my family deciding what kind of father I was.

Inside the courtroom, Rachel leaned toward me.

“She’s controlling the narrative.””

“I know.””

“She’s very good at it.””

I watched Melissa sit calmly beside her attorney.

“I know.””

But then something happened.

Something nobody expected.

A woman walked into the courtroom.

She looked nervous.

She kept looking behind her.

Like she was afraid someone was following her.

The moment Melissa saw her, her entire body stiffened.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Melissa recognized her.

The woman sat in the back.

Melissa leaned toward her attorney and whispered something.

Her attorney immediately stood and approached security.

I noticed.

Rachel noticed too.

“Who is that?””

“I don’t know.””

But I had a feeling.

The hearing continued.

Melissa’s attorney questioned me.

“Mr. Carter, isn’t it true that you removed your daughter from her mother without a court order?””

“Yes.””

“Isn’t it true that your wife has been Lily’s primary caregiver?””

“Yes.””

“Isn’t it true that thousands of people have witnessed your wife’s dedication to your daughter?””

I looked at him.

“People witnessed what she showed them.””

His expression changed.

“And you expect this court to believe that everyone else is wrong?””

“I expect this court to believe my daughter.””

The attorney smiled.

“Your daughter, who is eight years old?””

I felt anger rise.

“She’s a child. That doesn’t mean she’s a liar.””

He walked closer.

“Or does it mean she can be influenced?””

“No.””

“By her father?””

“No.””

“By someone who has convinced her to fear her mother?””

I looked toward Melissa.

She was watching me.

Calm.

Confident.

Then Rachel stood.

“Your Honor, we have additional information.””

The judge looked up.

“What kind?””

Rachel hesitated.

“A possible connection involving a previous child of Mrs. Carter.””

The room changed instantly.

Melissa’s face went pale.

Only for a moment.

But everyone saw it.

Her attorney immediately objected.

“Your Honor, this is irrelevant and highly prejudicial.””

The judge looked at Rachel.

“Do you have evidence connecting this information to the current matter?””

“Not yet.””

“Then I cannot consider speculation.””

Rachel nodded.

But I saw Melissa’s reaction.

And so did Detective Mitchell.

Because the question was no longer whether Emma mattered.

The question was why Melissa was afraid of her.

After court, I waited outside.

I wanted to talk to the woman.

The woman from the courtroom.

But she was gone.

Until I found a small envelope under my windshield wiper.

No name.

No explanation.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Three words.

*I remember everything.*

Below it was an address.

And a second line.

*Come alone.*

I looked around.

Nobody was there.

But I knew exactly who it was from.

The woman who had helped Melissa.

The woman who knew about Emma.

The woman who had been silent for eleven years.

I almost called Rachel.

Almost called Detective Mitchell.

But then I thought about Melissa.

About how carefully she controlled every person around her.

About how every secret disappeared when it got too close to the truth.

I needed answers.

And I needed them before Melissa found out I was looking.

That night, I drove to the address.

It was an old apartment building on the edge of town.

The kind of place people passed without noticing.

I climbed the stairs.

Knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again.

Then the door opened slightly.

A woman stood there.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with guilt.

I recognized her immediately.

She was the woman from the courtroom.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

She looked behind me.

Then pulled me inside.

“Close the door.””

I did.

She locked it.

Then she turned around.

“I don’t have much time.””

“Who are you?””

“My name is Karen Whitmore.””

“You worked with Melissa?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“What happened to Emma?””

Her face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel…”

“Yes?””

“Emma didn’t disappear.””

My heart stopped.

“Then where is she?””

Karen looked at me.

And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“She’s been alive this entire time.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

Karen grabbed the edge of the table.

“Melissa didn’t lose her first daughter.””

“Then what did she do?””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“She gave her away.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Karen looked terrified.

“Because Emma found out what Melissa was doing.””

“What she was doing?””

Karen nodded.

“She knew her mother was making children sick.””

My entire body went cold.

“Children?””

Karen looked at me.

And then she said the words that changed the entire investigation.

“Daniel…”

“Melissa didn’t start with Lily.””

May you like

A pause.

“She practiced on Emma.””
