Chapter 6: The Name Hidden In The Records

The ship moved differently after the lockdown.

Every vibration traveled through the walls.

Every sound felt closer.

The Resolute was no longer a military vessel.

It felt like a trap.

I stood inside Deck Four surrounded by years of hidden evidence while the people responsible tried to erase it.

But now there was a new problem.

The people controlling the ship knew exactly where we were.

Marcus’s voice returned through my radio.

“Hannah, you need to leave that area.””

“Not possible.””

“Why?””

“Because they sealed the exits.””

Silence.

Then:

“Who is with you?””

I looked around the room.

Daniel.

Voss.

Kane.

Three men connected to the same secret.

Three different versions of the truth.

“Complicated.””

Marcus sighed.

“That usually means dangerous.””

“It means I need more time.””

“You don’t have much.””

I looked at the evidence boxes.

“We have a bigger problem.””

“What?””

“Someone else is controlling the operation.””

Another pause.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at Kane.

“Yes.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Then find out who.””

The transmission ended.

I turned toward the others.

“Start talking.””

Nobody answered.

I walked to the center of the room.

“Kane.””

He looked at me.

“I already know you’re responsible for what happened here.””

His face remained cold.

“But you’re not the person giving orders anymore.””

No reaction.

Interesting.

“You know who it is.””

Kane looked away.

That was enough.

I turned to Voss.

“And you.””

He stared back.

“You knew this would happen.””

“No.””

“But you suspected.””

A long silence.

Then he finally spoke.

“There are people who cannot be investigated.””

I almost smiled.

“That’s a convenient sentence.””

“It’s the truth.””

“No.””

I pointed at the room around us.

“This is what happens when everyone decides the truth is too dangerous.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“My son believed someone would eventually expose them.””

His voice cracked.

“I told him to stop.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I told him to let it go.””

He looked at the picture of the missing sailors.

“I was wrong.””

For the first time, Kane’s expression softened.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Regret.

Then he covered it.

I noticed.

Because investigators notice everything.

“Victor,” Voss said quietly.

Kane looked at him.

“You should tell her.””

Kane’s eyes became sharp.

“Absolutely not.””

Voss shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No.””

Voss stepped closer.

“She already found the room.””

The two men stared at each other.

Then Voss said the words that changed the entire investigation.

“She deserves to know who signed the original order.””

I looked between them.

“What order?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Kane slowly reached into his uniform pocket.

He removed a small key.

Not a weapon.

Not a threat.

A key.

He placed it on the table.

“This opens the real archive.””

I didn’t move.

“Where?””

Kane looked toward the floor.

“Below Deck Four.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“There is no below Deck Four.””

Kane looked at him.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

All this time, everyone had been looking at Deck Four.

The missing sailors.

The hidden records.

The evidence.

But Deck Four wasn’t the secret.

It was the door.

The real secret was underneath.

“What is down there?”” I asked.

Kane looked at me.

And for the first time, there was no arrogance in his voice.

Only fear.

“The reason this ship was built.””

The alarms continued outside.

The lockdown continued.

Whoever controlled the Resolute was closing in.

I picked up the key.

“Then we go down.””

Voss shook his head.

“You don’t understand what you’re walking into.””

I looked at him.

“That’s why I’m going.””

Daniel stepped beside me.

“So am I.””

Kane stared at both of us.

“You really don’t know what’s waiting.””

I turned toward the hidden access panel beneath the old storage area.

“What’s waiting?””

Kane didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The person who started all of this.””

The panel opened with a heavy metallic sound.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

And at the bottom of those stairs was something nobody aboard the Resolute had seen in years.

May you like

A room that officially did not exist.

And inside that room was a name that would finally explain why Colonel Victor Kane was willing to throw me into the Pacific.
