Chapter 4 - The Whitmore Family Table

Edward entered the café like he owned it.

Maybe men like him always entered rooms that way.

He looked at Ethan first.

“You frightened your grandmother.”

Ethan laughed.

“She tried to take my files.”

“They belong to Whitmore Industrial.”

“They were inside my trust archive.”

Edward’s face tightened.

Then he looked at me.

“Claire.”

“Edward.”

“We should speak privately.”

“No.”

He glanced at Maya.

“She does not belong in family business.”

I stood.

“Maya belongs anywhere I ask her to.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re emotional.”

That sentence almost made me laugh.

“I found out yesterday that my husband has a fifteen-year-old son.”

I leaned closer.

“I think I’ve earned emotional.”

Ethan sat rigidly beside me.

Edward lowered his voice.

“You do not understand those documents.”

“Then explain Ava’s forged signature.”

His face changed.

There.

A crack.

He had not expected me to know.

“What signature?”

I placed the copy on the table.

“This one.”

Edward stared.

“I didn’t sign that.”

“I didn’t ask if you personally held the pen.”

“I don’t know how that happened.”

“Lie better.”

He looked offended.

Good.

Ethan whispered, “Grandpa, why did you put money under Ava’s name?”

Edward turned.

“This is adult business.”

“I’m fifteen when you want me quiet.”

Ethan’s voice rose.

“But I’m old enough when you want me signing trust documents.”

Several people looked over.

Edward’s face darkened.

“You will not speak to me that way.”

I stepped between them.

“You will not speak to him that way either.”

Edward stared at me.

“You are not his mother.”

“No.”

I looked at Ethan.

“But apparently I’m the first adult asking what he wants.”

Edward’s mouth tightened.

Then Daniel entered.

I turned.

He looked terrible.

Hair uncombed.

Face pale.

He had probably not slept.

“Claire.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Edward looked furious.

“What are you doing here?”

Daniel ignored him.

“I went to your office.”

Edward went still.

“What?”

“I opened the safe.”

The power shifted instantly.

Edward’s face changed.

“What did you take?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Copies.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Edward stepped toward him.

“You had no right.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You forged my wife’s signature.”

“I did no such thing.”

“You authorized the trust.”

“That isn’t the same.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“You used Ava.”

Edward lowered his voice.

“To protect her future.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“To protect money.”

People nearby were openly watching now.

I didn’t care.

Edward looked at Ethan.

Then me.

Then Daniel.

“Come home.”

“No,” Daniel said.

I stared at him.

It might have been the first time I had ever heard him say no to his father.

Edward seemed equally surprised.

“I said come home.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m going to an attorney.”

Edward’s face reddened.

“Do you understand what you’re doing?”

“Yes.”

“You destroy this company and thousands of people lose jobs.”

There it was.

The excuse.

Again.

Daniel looked at him.

“You used that line when you told me to hide Ethan.”

Edward went silent.

I felt sick.

Daniel continued.

“You used it when Claire’s father invested.”

Silence.

“When you made the payments.”

Edward’s eyes sharpened.

“Enough.”

“What payments?” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“The government contracts.”

My heart pounded.

“You knew?”

“Not then.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

Another betrayal.

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“I didn’t know they were bribes until this morning.”

“What did you think?”

“Consulting fees.”

“Why were they hidden?”

He said nothing.

I shook my head.

“Don’t tell me you never wondered.”

“I wondered.”

“And then chose not to know.”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

That honesty hurt.

But at least it was honesty.

Edward pointed at Daniel.

“You ungrateful fool.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You taught me this.”

“What?”

“To believe family meant hiding whatever threatened the name.”

Edward scoffed.

“You enjoyed everything that name gave you.”

“Yes.”

Daniel swallowed.

“And I used Claire to keep it.”

My chest tightened.

He looked directly at me.

“I loved you.”

I almost turned away.

“But I also knew Dad believed your father’s investment depended partly on our relationship.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I stayed silent because I wanted both.”

I stared.

“You wanted me and the money.”

“Yes.”

“You let me marry you without knowing about Ethan because you wanted both.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No soft wording.

Just yes.

I hated him for how much that honesty hurt.

Then Diane appeared at the café door.

Of course.

The entire family arriving for the collapse.

She hurried toward Edward.

“What happened?”

Ethan laughed.

“Which part?”

Diane looked at me.

“Claire, please.”

“No.”

I held up Ava’s trust.

“Did you know my signature was forged?”

Her face told me before she spoke.

“I knew something was wrong.”

I stepped backward.

“You knew.”

“Not originally.”

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I confronted Edward.”

“That isn’t telling me.”

She began crying.

“Claire—”

“You all keep confronting each other inside the secret.”

My voice shook.

“And nobody ever tells the person being lied to.”

Silence.

I looked at Daniel.

“At least your mother is consistent.”

He lowered his head.

Ethan stood.

“I want out of the trust.”

Edward snapped toward him.

“No.”

“I don’t want your company.”

“You are fifteen. You have no idea what you’re saying.”

“I know exactly.”

Ethan’s hands were shaking.

“I want my name.”

His voice broke.

“Not your money.”

Natalie entered behind Diane.

She had apparently followed.

Ethan walked toward her.

Edward said, “If you leave with those documents, you will regret it.”

Natalie stopped.

So did Ethan.

I turned slowly.

“Was that a threat?”

Edward realized his mistake.

“No.”

“It sounded like one.”

Daniel stepped between his father and Ethan.

“Enough.”

Edward stared at his son.

Then said something cold enough to silence all of us.

“If you walk out with them, Daniel, you are done.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

“No company.”

Edward continued.

“No inheritance.”

Diane whispered, “Edward.”

“No family.”

Daniel looked at me.

Then Ethan.

Then his father.

For one terrible second, I wondered which life he would choose.

Then Daniel reached into his coat.

He placed a flash drive on the table.

“I already copied everything.”

Edward’s face collapsed.

May you like

Daniel looked at him.

“And I already sent it to my lawyer.”
