Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Always There
Adrian returned to Philadelphia the following morning.
He didn't tell Zoe where he had been.
He didn't tell Celeste everything he had discovered.
Not yet.
Some truths needed proof before they could be spoken aloud.
Thomas Whitaker agreed to meet him at an old diner near City Hall.
The restaurant had barely changed in twenty years.
Red vinyl booths.
Chrome-edged tables.
A bell above the entrance.
Adrian arrived ten minutes early.
Thomas was already there.
At sixty-two, he had silver hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and the same warm smile Adrian remembered from childhood.
He stood when Adrian approached.
"Son.""
Adrian didn't sit.
"Don't call me that.""
Thomas's smile faded.
"All right.""
Adrian slid into the booth.
Thomas sat opposite him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
A waitress approached.
"Coffee?""
"Black," Adrian replied.
Thomas ordered the same.
When she left, Adrian placed the DNA report on the table.
Thomas looked down.
His face changed.
"So you've seen it.""
"Did you father Zoe?""
Thomas rubbed his hands together.
"Adrian, I never wanted things to happen this way.""
"That's not an answer.""
Thomas looked toward the window.
"Yes.""
One word.
One confession.
Adrian felt something break inside his chest.
"How?""
Thomas closed his eyes.
"Your father and I were close. We worked together. We shared everything.""
"Apparently.""
"One night, after a family gathering, I made a terrible decision.""
Adrian stared at him.
"With Celeste?""
Thomas nodded.
"Before she became pregnant.""
Adrian's hands tightened around the table edge.
"Did she know?""
"No.""
"Did you tell her?""
"No.""
"Did my father know?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Eventually.""
Adrian leaned forward.
"How long did you know?""
"Your father confronted me when he found out about the pregnancy.""
"And what did you say?""
"I told him the truth.""
Adrian laughed without humor.
"So my father knew I might not be Zoe's biological father.""
"Yes.""
"And he still let me raise her?""
Thomas looked directly at him.
"Raymond loved you. He also loved Zoe. He believed biology shouldn't determine who gets to be a father.""
Adrian looked down at the report.
"Then why did he let my mother manipulate everything?""
"He tried to stop her.""
"Not hard enough.""
Thomas nodded.
"You're right.""
The waitress returned with their coffee.
She placed the cups down and walked away.
Adrian didn't touch his.
"Why did Evelyn choose Zoe?""
Thomas looked at him.
"Because she believed Zoe was my daughter.""
Adrian frowned.
"Your daughter?""
Thomas nodded.
"Evelyn knew about the affair. She also knew Celeste was pregnant. She thought one of the twins was mine and the other was yours.""
Adrian stared.
"But she was wrong.""
"Yes. She assumed the baby with the birthmark was yours. She had the hospital records changed so that Zoe would remain with you.""
Adrian shook his head.
"She wanted to raise a child who wasn't biologically mine, while pretending she was protecting the Cole family.""
Thomas looked down.
"She wanted to control the situation.""
"By stealing my daughter's sister.""
"Yes.""
Adrian stood.
"Do you understand what you've done?""
Thomas didn't move.
"I do.""
"No, you don't. I spent six years telling Zoe that she was my little girl. I never questioned it. I loved her because she was mine in every way that mattered.""
His voice cracked.
"And all of you knew there was another child somewhere.""
Thomas looked up.
"I know.""
Adrian sat again.
"Did you ever meet Imani?""
Thomas shook his head.
"No.""
"Did you know she was alive?""
"I thought she had been adopted.""
"She wasn't. Celeste raised her.""
Thomas looked genuinely shocked.
"She did?""
Adrian nodded.
"Your actions nearly destroyed two families.""
Thomas covered his face.
"I'm sorry.""
Adrian stared at him.
"Sorry doesn't tell me why you never came forward.""
Thomas reached into his jacket.
He removed a folded letter.
"Your father gave me this before he died.""
Adrian took it.
"What's this?""
"A confession.""
He opened the letter.
The handwriting was Raymond's.
Thomas,
I know what happened between you and Celeste. I also know Zoe may be your biological daughter.
But Adrian is the only father she has ever known.
If you ever tell him, do it because he deserves the truth, not because you want to claim something you never helped raise.
I made a terrible mistake by allowing Evelyn to interfere with the girls' lives. I will spend the rest of my life regretting it.
Please make sure both children know they were wanted.
Adrian lowered the letter.
His eyes burned.
"Did my father know about the hospital switch?""
Thomas nodded.
"He discovered it too late.""
"How late?""
"After Zoe had already gone home with you.""
"Then why didn't he bring Imani home too?""
Thomas looked at him.
"Because Evelyn told him Celeste had agreed to give Imani up.""
Adrian shook his head.
"She never agreed.""
"I know that now.""
Adrian stood again.
"Everybody knew something. Everybody hid something. And two little girls paid the price.""
Thomas didn't argue.
Then he said something unexpected.
"There's one more thing you need to know.""
Adrian turned.
"Another one?""
Thomas nodded.
"Evelyn didn't act alone.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Who helped her?""
"The hospital administrator. He was the one who approved the transfer papers.""
"Why?""
Thomas looked down.
"Because he was being paid.""
"By whom?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he gave Adrian a name.
"Your grandmother's family.""
Adrian frowned.
"My grandmother died before I was born.""
"Her sister didn't. Her name was Louise.""
Adrian had heard the name.
A wealthy relative who rarely attended family gatherings.
He remembered Evelyn speaking about her with a mixture of respect and resentment.
"What did Louise want?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"She wanted the Cole family fortune protected.""
Adrian stared.
"What does that have to do with my daughters?""
"Your grandmother left a trust. It was supposed to pass to the first biological male heir of the family. But there was a condition.""
"What condition?""
"The heir had to be publicly acknowledged before his seventh birthday.""
Adrian frowned.
"That's ridiculous.""
"Your mother believed the trust could be challenged if the family lineage became complicated.""
"And Zoe?""
Thomas looked him in the eye.
"She believed Zoe was your biological daughter and would help secure the family claim.""
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"She was trying to protect an inheritance?""
"Yes.""
He stared at Thomas.
"How much?""
"Enough to change several lives.""
Adrian looked toward the diner entrance.
He suddenly remembered Evelyn's obsession with Zoe's birth certificate.
The repeated requests for copies.
The insistence that Adrian use the Cole family name on every document.
The questions about whether Zoe had been baptized.
It hadn't been affection.
It had been preparation.
His phone rang.
Celeste.
He answered immediately.
"What's wrong?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Adrian, you need to come home.""
"What happened?""
"Your mother is here.""
He stood so quickly that his coffee spilled.
"Is she with the girls?""
"Yes.""
"Put them somewhere safe.""
"Adrian, listen to me.""
He heard a loud voice in the background.
Evelyn.
Then Celeste spoke again.
"She brought documents.""
"What documents?""
"She says she's taking Zoe.""
Adrian froze.
"Taking her where?""
"She says she has legal custody papers.""
His stomach dropped.
"That's impossible.""
"She says she has proof that you aren't Zoe's biological father.""
Adrian looked at Thomas.
Thomas had gone pale.
Celeste's voice broke.
"Adrian, she's saying you're not entitled to keep her.""
Adrian grabbed his keys.
"Don't sign anything. Don't let her leave with either girl.""
Then he heard Zoe's voice in the background.
"Daddy?""
Adrian stopped breathing.
"Zoe, sweetheart?""
"Daddy, Grandma says I have to go with her.""
He heard Evelyn speak sharply.
"Zoe, come here.""
Then Zoe began crying.
"Daddy, I don't want to go.""
Adrian's voice became firm.
"Baby, listen to me. Stay with Mommy. I'm coming.""
He ended the call.
Thomas stood.
"Adrian, let me help.""
Adrian turned toward him.
For the first time, he didn't see the man who had betrayed his family.
He saw someone who might finally have the courage to make things right.
"Then tell me where Louise is.""
Thomas hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because if my mother is trying to use an inheritance to take my daughter, I want to know who gave her the power to do it.""
Thomas reached into his jacket again.
He pulled out a small black folder.
"Your father left this too.""
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a copy of the original trust agreement.
The final page contained a handwritten amendment.
It had been signed six months before Raymond died.
Adrian read the first line.
In the event of deliberate concealment, unlawful separation, or manipulation of the Cole descendants, all inheritance rights held by Evelyn Cole shall be immediately revoked.
He looked at Thomas.
"Does my mother know about this?""
Thomas nodded.
"She knows.""
Adrian felt a cold certainty settle over him.
"Then why is she trying to take Zoe?""
Thomas's answer was almost a whisper.
"Because the amendment only becomes effective when the truth is formally established.""
Adrian looked down at the signature.
His father's signature.
Then he saw the date.
Raymond had signed the amendment four years earlier.
He had known Evelyn might try to take control of the girls again.
And he had left a way to stop her.
Adrian rushed toward the door.
But before he reached it, Thomas called after him.
"Adrian!""
He turned.
Thomas's eyes were wet.
"There's something in that folder you haven't read.""
Adrian opened it again.
Beneath the trust agreement was a sealed document.
A DNA report.
Not the old report concerning Zoe and Thomas.
This one listed three names.
Raymond Cole.
Adrian Cole.
And a third person.
The result was marked confidential.
Adrian unfolded the final page.
Then his phone rang again.
Evelyn.
He answered.
His mother's voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Adrian, darling, I think you should look at the last page of your father's document before you make another mistake.""
Adrian looked down.
The report contained a sentence that made his entire body go cold.
May you like
*Raymond Cole was not Adrian Cole's biological father.*
And suddenly, the reason Evelyn had spent six years controlling the twins became far more complicated than anyone had imagined.
