Chapter 10: The Truth That Made Them a Family

Adrian read the DNA report again.

Then a third time.

*Raymond Cole was not Adrian Cole's biological father.*

For several seconds, the diner seemed to tilt around him.

His father.

The man who had taught him to ride a bicycle.

The man who had sat beside his hospital bed when he broke his arm.

The man who had walked him down the aisle at his wedding.

The man who had held Zoe and whispered that she was beautiful.

Not his biological father.

Thomas stood across the table, watching him.

"Adrian, there's something you need to understand.""

Adrian slowly raised his head.

"How long have you known?""

"Since Raymond died.""

"And you never told me?""

"Raymond asked me to wait until the right time.""

Adrian let out a bitter laugh.

"Apparently, everybody in my family has been waiting for the right time.""

Thomas reached for the report.

Adrian pulled it away.

"Don't.""

He studied the document again.

The test compared Raymond Cole, Adrian Cole, and another individual whose name had been covered by a black marker.

But beneath the redacted name was a handwritten note.

*Biological father identified in sealed family records.*

Adrian looked at Thomas.

"Who is it?""

Thomas shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

"Then why did my mother call me immediately after I found this?""

Thomas looked toward the window.

"Because she knows.""

Adrian's phone rang.

Evelyn.

He answered.

"Tell me who my father is.""

His mother's voice remained composed.

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"It matters to me.""

"Who is my biological father?""

A pause.

Then Evelyn said:

"Come home, Adrian. Your daughter is frightened.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

"You brought this into our home. You frightened her. You don't get to use her to avoid answering me.""

"Your father loved you.""

"Which father?""

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

"Raymond was your father in every way that mattered.""

"Then why did you hide the truth?""

"Because I wanted to protect you.""

"From whom?""

She didn't answer.

Adrian looked at the report.

"Was it Thomas?""

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

"No.""

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"Your biological father was a man named Samuel Reed.""

Adrian froze.

Reed.

The surname.

Celeste's surname.

He slowly looked at Thomas.

"Samuel Reed?""

Evelyn continued.

"He was Daniel's older brother. He was involved with your biological mother before Raymond and I married.""

Adrian gripped the phone.

"You're telling me Celeste's family is connected to mine through Samuel?""

"Yes.""

"Was Samuel Celeste's father?""

"No. Daniel raised Celeste, but Samuel was his brother.""

Adrian's mind raced.

"So Celeste and I aren't related?""

"Not biologically.""

"Then why did you tell us she was my half-sister?""

"Because I believed Daniel was your biological father.""

"But he wasn't.""

"No.""

"How long have you known?""

Evelyn's voice broke.

"Since Raymond received the original test results.""

Adrian stared at the floor.

His entire childhood had been built around a family story that wasn't true.

"Why did you marry Raymond if you knew?""

"Because I loved him.""

"And he knew?""

"Eventually.""

Adrian shook his head.

"Who was my mother?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

He repeated the question.

"Who gave birth to me?""

Finally, she whispered:

"Margaret Reed.""

Adrian's heart stopped.

Celeste.

Daniel.

Samuel.

The Reed family.

Everything had been connected from the beginning.

"Where is she?""

Evelyn began crying.

"She's dead.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

"How?""

"Complications after childbirth.""

He leaned against the diner wall.

"Did she know Raymond was raising me?""

"Yes.""

"Did she agree?""

"She believed you would have a better life.""

Adrian laughed painfully.

"Everybody keeps saying they were protecting me. Yet nobody thought I deserved the truth.""

Evelyn's voice became desperate.

"Adrian, please come home.""

"No.""

"Your daughter needs you.""

"Both my daughters need me.""

He ended the call.

Thomas stood quietly.

"Samuel Reed was Daniel's brother," he said.

"That explains why your mother was so determined to keep the Reed family away from the Cole family.""

Adrian looked at him.

"And why did she want Zoe?""

"Because she believed Zoe carried Raymond's bloodline.""

"But she didn't.""

"No.""

Adrian stared at the report.

Then he noticed something.

The test had been performed four years earlier.

Raymond had known the truth before he died.

And he had signed the amendment to the family trust afterward.

Perhaps his father had finally understood that family wasn't something that could be controlled by blood, money, or paperwork.

Adrian folded the report.

"I have to get home.""

Thomas nodded.

"I'll come with you.""

Adrian hesitated.

Then he said, "You can come. But don't expect me to forgive you today.""

"I don't.""

They left together.

When Adrian arrived home, the front door was open.

He rushed inside.

Celeste stood beside the sofa.

Zoe was pressed against her mother's side, holding a stuffed rabbit.

Imani sat beside her in her yellow cardigan.

Both girls looked up.

"Daddy!""

Zoe ran toward him.

Adrian dropped to his knees and caught her.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

"Grandma said you weren't my real daddy.""

Adrian closed his eyes.

He held her tightly.

"Who told you that?""

"She said you didn't make me.""

He pulled back enough to look at her face.

"Zoe, sweetheart, look at me.""

She wiped her nose.

"Am I still your daughter?""

Adrian felt his heart break.

He placed both hands gently on her cheeks.

"Listen to me very carefully. I don't care what any paper says. I don't care what anybody tells you. I chose you every single day since the day I first held you.""

"But Grandma said...""

"Grandma was wrong.""

He kissed her forehead.

"You are my daughter. You will always be my daughter.""

Zoe began crying.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

Imani approached slowly.

"Does that mean you're not my daddy?""

Adrian looked at her.

Then he opened his arms.

She ran into them.

He held both girls together.

"No, sweetheart. It means I have more love to give than I ever realized.""

Celeste watched them, tears running down her face.

Thomas stood near the entrance.

He didn't interrupt.

For the first time, Adrian understood what his father Raymond had tried to say in that letter.

Being a father wasn't something a laboratory could grant.

It was something a person proved.

Every morning.

Every bedtime.

Every time a frightened child needed someone to say, I'm here.

Celeste approached.

"Adrian, we need to talk about everything.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

She glanced at the girls.

"Not in front of them.""

"Agreed.""

Then the doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Patricia stood outside.

She had flown from Atlanta that morning.

In her hands was a thick folder.

"I brought the last document," she said.

Adrian stepped aside.

Patricia entered and placed the folder on the dining table.

"The original trust amendment," she explained.

"The one Raymond signed. And the letter from Louise.""

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a formal declaration.

Louise, the elderly family trustee, had written that Evelyn's attempt to separate the twins violated the conditions of the family trust.

The amendment revoked Evelyn's authority over the estate.

It also established an educational fund for both girls.

Adrian read the final paragraph.

No child shall ever be treated as less deserving of love, protection, or inheritance because of the circumstances of their birth.

He looked up.

"Did Louise know about the switch?""

Patricia nodded.

"She discovered it after Raymond died. She wanted to correct it, but Evelyn threatened to challenge the entire trust.""

Adrian closed the folder.

"Where is she now?""

"She wants to meet you.""

Adrian nodded.

"Then we'll meet.""

Three weeks later, the family gathered in a conference room at Louise's attorney's office.

Evelyn sat at one end of the table.

She looked older than Adrian remembered.

Her usual perfectly arranged hair was slightly untidy.

Her hands trembled around a paper cup.

Louise sat beside her attorney.

She was an elderly Black woman with silver hair and a walking cane.

Adrian entered with Celeste and the girls.

Zoe wore her pale blue dress.

Imani wore her yellow cardigan.

The girls held hands.

Evelyn looked at them.

For a moment, her expression softened.

"Zoe.""

Zoe moved closer to Adrian.

"Hello, Grandma.""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"I've missed you.""

Zoe didn't answer.

Imani looked at her.

"Are you the grandma who made Mommy sad?""

Evelyn lowered her head.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"Why?""

Nobody moved.

Evelyn looked at Celeste.

Then at Adrian.

"Because I was afraid.""

Adrian's voice was quiet.

"Afraid of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

Louise tapped her cane against the floor.

"You nearly did, Evelyn. And you nearly destroyed two children in the process.""

Evelyn began crying.

"I thought I was protecting the family.""

Louise shook her head.

"You were protecting an inheritance. Those are not the same thing.""

Adrian placed the hospital photographs on the table.

"These are my daughters. They were born together. They should have grown up together.""

Evelyn nodded.

"I know.""

"You don't get to decide which child deserves a father.""

"I know.""

"And you don't get to decide which child belongs to a family.""

Evelyn looked at Zoe and Imani.

"I know.""

For a long moment, Adrian said nothing.

Then he spoke.

"I won't keep the girls away from you forever. But you will never again make decisions about their lives without their parents' permission.""

Evelyn nodded through her tears.

"All right.""

"And you will tell them the truth when they're old enough to understand.""

"I will.""

Adrian looked toward Celeste.

She gave him a small nod.

The legal documents were signed.

The trust was restored under the terms of Raymond's amendment.

Evelyn lost her authority over the estate.

The hospital investigation was reopened, and Dr. Bennett's original records were handed to the appropriate authorities.

Thomas also signed a statement acknowledging his biological connection to Zoe.

But none of those documents could undo six years.

That part would take time.

Months passed.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Adrian stood in the backyard of his home.

A banner stretched across the fence.

*HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ZOE & IMANI!*

Two cakes sat on a table.

One chocolate.

One strawberry.

The girls had insisted on having both.

Zoe wore a blue party dress.

Imani wore yellow.

Their curls bounced as they ran between the balloons.

Celeste stood beside Adrian, holding two paper plates.

"Can you believe this is happening?"" she asked.

He smiled.

"No.""

She looked at the girls.

"They're happy.""

"They deserve to be.""

Celeste rested her head briefly against his shoulder.

"We've got a lot of rebuilding to do.""

"I know.""

"But I don't want them growing up surrounded by secrets.""

"Neither do I.""

Across the yard, Zoe called out.

"Daddy! Come here!""

Adrian walked toward her.

"What is it, sweetheart?""

She pointed toward Imani.

"We have something to show you.""

The girls stood side by side.

Their faces were identical.

Their clothes were different.

Their personalities were already beginning to show.

Zoe was outgoing and stubborn.

Imani was thoughtful and observant.

But both had the same little dimple when they smiled.

Zoe held up a handmade picture.

It showed two little girls standing between a man and a woman.

Above them, she had written four words.

*OUR FAMILY. OUR STORY.*

Imani pointed at the picture.

"That's you, Daddy.""

Adrian smiled.

"And who's that?""

"Mommy.""

"And who are these two beautiful girls?""

The sisters looked at each other.

Then they answered together.

"Us!""

Adrian laughed.

He pulled them into a hug.

Zoe suddenly looked up.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, baby?""

"Remember when you thought I was standing by the bookshelf?""

He smiled.

"I remember.""

"You called Imani my name.""

"That I did.""

Zoe giggled.

"That was silly.""

Imani nodded.

"Very silly.""

Then Zoe became serious.

"But you know something?""

"What?""

She took her sister's hand.

"You don't have to look for us anymore.""

Adrian felt his eyes fill.

"Why not?""

Zoe smiled.

"Because we're both here.""

Imani leaned against his side.

"Right here, Daddy.""

He looked at the two girls.

Six years earlier, he had walked into a library believing he had one daughter.

He had walked out carrying a question that would unravel an entire family's history.

He had discovered lies, betrayal, a hidden inheritance, and a truth about his own birth.

But the greatest discovery hadn't been a DNA result.

It hadn't been a hospital record.

It hadn't even been the identity of the people who had hurt them.

It was that two little girls who had been separated by adults had found each other again.

And they had never needed a perfect family.

They had only needed people willing to tell the truth and stay.

Adrian kissed Zoe's forehead.

Then Imani's.

"You're both right," he whispered.

He looked toward Celeste.

She smiled through her tears.

The birthday candles were lit.

The girls closed their eyes.

"Make a wish!"" Adrian called.

Zoe and Imani blew together.

The candles disappeared.

And as the guests applauded, the two sisters held hands.

One in blue.

One in yellow.

Two faces.

Two names.

One birthday.

May you like

One family.

And this time, nobody would ever separate them again.
