Chapter 5: Room 214

Adrian didn't sleep that night.

He sat at his kitchen table with the photograph of the newborn twins in front of him.

The house was quiet.

Zoe was asleep upstairs.

Celeste had taken Imani home after they agreed to meet the following morning.

But the doctor's words kept repeating in his mind.

She arranged for both babies to be separated from their father.

Both babies.

Adrian rubbed his face.

How could his mother have separated him from two children when he had been living with Zoe for six years?

At 8:15 the following morning, he arrived at a small medical office on the outskirts of Philadelphia.

Celeste sat beside him in the waiting room.

She had brought the cardboard box.

Neither spoke.

A door opened.

An older Black man in a gray suit stepped out.

"Mr. Cole?""

Adrian stood.

"Dr. Bennett?""

The doctor nodded.

"Come inside.""

His office smelled of coffee and old paper. A framed medical degree hung behind his desk.

Dr. Bennett closed the door.

He looked at Celeste.

Then at Adrian.

"I've thought about this day for six years.""

Adrian sat forward.

"Then start talking.""

The doctor folded his hands.

"Your mother contacted me several weeks before the delivery.""

"Why?""

"She said you were emotionally unstable. She claimed you were involved in a serious family dispute and that Celeste was planning to disappear with your children.""

Adrian stared.

"That's a lie.""

"I know that now.""

"Did you know it then?""

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

"I knew there were inconsistencies.""

Celeste's voice trembled.

"You let her take my daughter.""

Dr. Bennett lowered his eyes.

"Yes.""

Celeste stood abruptly.

"Do you know what it was like to wake up and be told my baby had been transferred? Do you know how many times I begged to see her?""

"I'm sorry.""

"Sorry?""

She placed both hands on his desk.

"I spent six years thinking someone had stolen my child.""

The doctor didn't defend himself.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"What happened in Room 214?""

Dr. Bennett opened a drawer.

He removed a thick folder.

"Your mother arranged a private meeting with me shortly after the twins were born. She brought another woman with her.""

"Who?""

"Your aunt, Patricia.""

Adrian frowned.

"My aunt Patricia?""

"She was there when the second baby was discharged.""

Celeste shook her head.

"I never saw Patricia.""

"She signed the paperwork.""

Adrian leaned forward.

"Where is the other baby?""

The doctor looked at him.

"One baby remained with Celeste. The other was taken out through the rear maternity entrance.""

"By my aunt?""

"Yes.""

"Where did she go?""

"That information was recorded in a sealed transfer file.""

Adrian's face hardened.

"You helped my mother steal my child, and now you're telling me you don't know where she went?""

"I know where she went.""

The room fell silent.

Dr. Bennett removed another document.

"Your aunt Patricia took the baby to a temporary foster placement. She was supposed to return within forty-eight hours.""

"Supposed to?""

"She never did.""

Adrian looked at Celeste.

She was crying silently.

"Then what happened?"" he asked.

Dr. Bennett rubbed his forehead.

"Three days later, the hospital received a call from your mother. She claimed Celeste had abandoned both babies and that she was now the only family member willing to take responsibility.""

Adrian felt sick.

"But Zoe came home with me.""

"Yes.""

The doctor paused.

"Your mother had arranged that.""

Adrian stared.

"Explain.""

"She wanted you to believe you had one healthy daughter and that Celeste had disappeared voluntarily. She believed you would raise Zoe without ever questioning what happened to the other child.""

Celeste wiped her cheek.

"Then how did Imani come back to me?""

Dr. Bennett looked down at the paperwork.

"That's the part I don't understand.""

He opened the folder.

"Someone brought the second baby to your apartment. But the records show that the official foster placement was never completed.""

Adrian shook his head.

"Who brought her?""

"I don't know.""

"Someone knows.""

Dr. Bennett nodded.

"Your aunt Patricia.""

Adrian stood.

"Where is she?""

"She moved to Atlanta four years ago. I haven't spoken to her since.""

Adrian pulled out his phone.

He searched for her number.

He still had it.

But before he could call, Celeste reached across the desk.

"Wait.""

He turned.

"What?""

"There's something I never told you.""

Adrian's expression tightened.

"Another secret?""

Celeste nodded.

"When Imani was three months old, a woman came to my apartment.""

"Who?""

"Your aunt Patricia.""

Adrian stopped moving.

"What did she want?""

"She asked me to forgive her.""

Celeste opened her purse and removed a small photograph.

It showed a woman standing outside a brick apartment building.

Behind her was a parked car.

Celeste pointed to the woman.

"That's Patricia.""

Adrian studied the picture.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because she begged me not to.""

"What did she say?""

Celeste took a breath.

"She said your mother had made her choose between helping her and losing her own children.""

Adrian stared.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"She said she was supposed to take Imani to another family. A wealthy couple who couldn't have children. But she couldn't do it.""

"Then why didn't she bring the baby back to the hospital?""

"She said she was afraid of your mother.""

Adrian looked down at the photograph.

"Did Patricia tell you where she had taken Imani?""

Celeste shook her head.

"No. She only said she had made sure Imani would eventually come home.""

The doctor shifted in his chair.

"There is something else you should see.""

He opened a separate file.

Inside was a photocopy of an old hospital security report.

One entry had been circled.

*November 17 — Unauthorized access to Room 214.*

Adrian read the next line.

*Individual identified as Evelyn Cole.*

He looked up.

"My mother came back?""

Dr. Bennett nodded.

"At 11:42 p.m.""

"What did she do?""

The doctor hesitated.

"She requested access to the newborn records.""

"Why?""

"I never found out.""

Adrian looked at Celeste.

Then at the report.

A terrible thought entered his mind.

"If she wanted one baby to disappear, why did she keep Zoe with me?""

Dr. Bennett looked at him.

"Because she believed Zoe was the only child who could protect the family reputation.""

Adrian frowned.

"What reputation?""

The doctor closed the folder.

"Mr. Cole, I think you should speak to your aunt before you speak to your mother.""

"Why?""

"Because Patricia was not the only person who helped your mother that night.""

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

"Who else?""

Dr. Bennett leaned forward.

"Your father.""

Adrian went completely still.

His father, Raymond Cole, had died four years earlier.

He had been a quiet man who rarely challenged Evelyn.

Adrian remembered him bringing groceries after Zoe's birth.

He remembered his father holding the baby and whispering something he couldn't hear.

He had always assumed the old man was simply emotional.

Now he wondered what Raymond had known.

Celeste reached for Adrian's hand.

"Maybe we should stop.""

He looked at her.

"We can't.""

The doctor slid one final document across the desk.

It was a handwritten statement.

Adrian recognized his father's signature.

He read the first sentence.

I agreed to help Evelyn because I believed we were protecting our son.

Adrian's fingers went numb.

He continued reading.

But the child we were supposed to keep was not the child she brought home.

He looked up sharply.

"What does that mean?""

Dr. Bennett's face had gone pale.

"Mr. Cole...""

Adrian held up the statement.

"Why does my father say the wrong child was brought home?""

May you like

The doctor swallowed.

"Because the hospital may have released the wrong twin to your family.""
