Chapter 9: The Mother Who Never Signed

Tasha held the application in both hands.
She stared at the signature.
Her name.
Her handwriting.
The same curve at the end of the letter T.
The same little mark beneath her surname.
But she had never signed it.
"Where did this come from?""
Mr. Bennett shifted in his chair.
"Vanessa submitted it.""
"Who is Vanessa?""
"She said she was a family services consultant working with Derek.""
"Did you verify her credentials?""
Mr. Bennett hesitated.
"We requested identification.""
"That wasn't my question.""
He lowered his eyes.
"No. We didn't independently verify her professional status.""
Tasha placed the paper on the desk.
"Did she claim I agreed to this?""
"She said you had discussed the arrangement with Derek.""
"I never did.""
Mr. Bennett nodded.
"I understand.""
"No, you don't.""
Tasha pointed to the signature.
"Someone has copied my name onto a document that could change where my daughter lives. And your school accepted it as evidence?""
"We didn't use this document to release Maya.""
"But you kept it in her file.""
"Yes.""
"Without calling me.""
Mr. Bennett looked at the papers.
"I can see why you're upset.""
Tasha took a slow breath.
She didn't want another apology.
She wanted answers.
"Give me the original.""
He opened a drawer and removed a folder.
The application contained several pages.
One section described Maya's proposed living arrangements.
Another listed Derek as the primary parent.
Kiara was identified as the proposed daily caregiver.
And in the section marked parental agreement, Tasha's name appeared beneath a statement confirming that she had consented to the arrangement.
At the bottom was the date.
Three days earlier.
Tasha felt her hands begin to shake.
"Who witnessed this?""
Mr. Bennett pointed to a small box.
"Vanessa Cole.""
"She witnessed my signature?""
"Apparently.""
Tasha looked up.
"Where was I supposed to have signed it?""
He checked the application.
"At a meeting.""
"What meeting?""
"It says the meeting took place at Derek's residence.""
Tasha stared at him.
She had not been to Derek's residence in weeks.
She had not attended any meeting.
And she had certainly never agreed to give Kiara responsibility for her daughter.
She took photographs of every page.
Then she called Officer Reynolds.
"I need you to see something.""
Derek arrived at the school twenty minutes later.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled, and he had dark circles beneath his eyes.
"What is this about now?""
Tasha held up the application.
"Did you know someone submitted a residence arrangement using my signature?""
Derek frowned.
"What?""
"Look.""
He took the document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at the signature.
"I didn't know about this.""
Tasha didn't blink.
"Did you know Vanessa Cole?""
"Yes.""
"Who is she?""
"Kiara introduced us.""
"What does she do?""
Derek rubbed his forehead.
"She said she helped families organize living arrangements.""
"Is she a lawyer?""
"I don't know.""
"Is she a licensed social worker?""
"I don't know.""
"Then why did you let her prepare documents about our daughter?""
Derek looked frustrated.
"Because I thought she knew what she was doing.""
Tasha stared at him.
"You didn't know what she was doing, but you gave her information about Maya.""
"I was trying to find a solution.""
"You were trying to build a life with Kiara and fit my daughter into it.""
Derek looked away.
"That's not fair.""
Tasha placed the application between them.
"Then explain this.""
He read the paragraph about Tasha's consent.
His face turned pale.
"I never told Vanessa you had signed this.""
"Did you tell her I agreed?""
"I told her we were discussing things.""
"We weren't.""
"I thought you might eventually agree.""
Tasha stepped back.
"You told a stranger I might agree to something I had never even been asked about.""
Derek looked at the paper again.
Then he noticed something.
A small handwritten reference number appeared in the upper corner.
He frowned.
"What's that?""
Tasha looked.
"I don't know.""
Derek pointed.
"That's the reference number Kiara used when she emailed me the apartment documents.""
Tasha turned toward him.
"Are you sure?""
He nodded.
"I've seen it before.""
Officer Reynolds arrived just then.
Tasha handed him the application.
He examined the signature and the reference number.
"We'll need to establish who prepared this and how it was submitted.""
Derek looked at him.
"Can you tell whether the signature is fake?""
"That requires proper examination. But we can preserve the original and investigate its source.""
Tasha nodded.
"Please do.""
Meanwhile, Kiara sat alone in the apartment.
The pink bedroom door was open.
Maya's drawing remained on the dining table.
Kiara picked it up.
She stared at the three figures.
Then she folded the paper in half.
Her phone rang.
Vanessa.
Kiara answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere you aren't.""
"Don't play games with me.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"You're the one who thought this would be easy.""
Kiara walked toward the kitchen.
"The school has the original authorization.""
"I know.""
"And they found the residence application.""
Vanessa stopped laughing.
"How?""
"I don't know. Derek has seen it.""
There was a long pause.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"Did he recognize the reference number?""
Kiara froze.
"Why?""
"Because that number links the application to the first file.""
"What first file?""
Vanessa sighed.
"Kiara, I told you to leave the original paperwork alone.""
"You told me everything was arranged.""
"I arranged a consultation. I prepared draft documents. I did not tell you to use a forged signature.""
Kiara's face went cold.
"You witnessed the application.""
"I witnessed a meeting.""
"You said it was fine.""
"I said the documents were drafts until the parents provided their consent.""
Kiara gripped the counter.
"You're trying to put everything on me.""
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
"Because you went ahead without consent.""
Kiara looked toward the front door.
"Listen. You need to come here.""
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
"I won't be involved in this anymore.""
The call ended.
Kiara stared at her phone.
Then she opened their old message thread.
There was a photograph of the application.
A message from Vanessa appeared underneath it.
*VANESSA: Don't submit this until both parents have signed.*
Kiara's stomach dropped.
She scrolled further.
Another message.
*KIARA: Derek has agreed. Tasha won't cooperate anyway.*
And then Vanessa's reply.
*VANESSA: Agreement from one parent isn't agreement from both. Please don't use my name to suggest otherwise.*
Kiara sat down.
She remembered ignoring that warning.
She had been so convinced that Tasha would eventually lose control of the situation that she hadn't considered the possibility of someone keeping a record.
Now the record existed.
And it was on her phone.
At the school, Officer Reynolds asked Derek to explain his relationship with Vanessa.
Derek sat beside Tasha.
"Kiara introduced her to me about two weeks ago.""
"Where?""
"At a café.""
"What did she tell you?""
"That she helped parents manage complicated household arrangements.""
"Did she tell you she could change custody?""
"No.""
"Did she say she could act on Tasha's behalf?""
Derek hesitated.
"She said she could help prepare the paperwork.""
Tasha looked at him.
"And you believed her?""
"I thought it was administrative.""
"Administrative?""
Derek rubbed his face.
"I didn't understand what the documents meant.""
Tasha looked away.
She had spent years believing that Derek could be careless, stubborn, and sometimes selfish.
But she had never imagined he would sign things about their daughter without understanding what they meant.
Officer Reynolds continued.
"Did you pay Vanessa?""
Derek nodded.
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"Five hundred dollars.""
Tasha turned sharply.
"You paid her?""
"She charged for her work.""
"What work?""
"Preparing the forms.""
Officer Reynolds wrote down the amount.
"Do you have proof of payment?""
Derek took out his phone.
"Yes.""
He opened his banking application and showed the transaction.
The payment had gone to an account under a business name.
*COLE FAMILY CONSULTING.*
Officer Reynolds took a photograph of the transaction details.
Then he asked Derek to open the original email exchange.
Derek scrolled.
A message dated three days earlier appeared.
*VANESSA: The application is ready. We only need Tasha's signature before it can be submitted.*
Below it was Derek's reply.
*DEREK: She hasn't signed.*
Then Vanessa's response.
*VANESSA: Then it cannot be submitted as a completed agreement.*
Tasha stared at the screen.
"She knew.""
Derek nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"She knew I hadn't signed.""
He said nothing.
Tasha looked at him.
"And you still allowed Kiara to take Maya?""
Derek closed his eyes.
"I didn't know about the false signature.""
"But you knew there was no agreement.""
Derek couldn't answer.
That afternoon, Tasha returned home with Maya.
She prepared dinner.
Helped her daughter change into pajamas.
And sat beside her while she colored.
For the first time since the school pickup, the house felt almost normal.
Maya was drawing a new picture.
This one had a house with three windows.
A small garden.
And a woman standing beside a little girl.
"Is that us?"" Tasha asked.
Maya nodded.
"That's our house.""
Tasha smiled.
"Where's Daddy?""
Maya looked at the paper.
"He's at his house.""
Tasha didn't correct her.
She simply kissed her forehead.
"That's okay, sweetheart.""
Maya continued coloring.
Then she asked a question that made Tasha's hand stop.
"Mommy, did I do something wrong?""
Tasha put the pencil down.
"No, baby. Why would you think that?""
"Because Kiara said everyone was trying to make a new family, and I was supposed to help.""
Tasha pulled her daughter close.
"You don't have to make grown-ups happy. You don't have to choose between anybody. You are allowed to love your daddy, and you are allowed to love me.""
Maya nodded.
"Can I still see Daddy?""
"Of course. When it's safe and everything is properly arranged.""
Maya rested her head against her mother's shoulder.
"Okay.""
Tasha held her.
She wanted to promise that nothing frightening would ever happen again.
But she knew better than to make promises she couldn't control.
At 8:17 that evening, Officer Reynolds called.
"Tasha, we've located Vanessa Cole.""
Tasha stood.
"Where?""
"She has agreed to come in and provide information.""
"Does she have the original documents?""
"She says she has copies.""
Tasha's heart beat faster.
"What did she tell you?""
There was a pause.
"She says the application was never meant to be submitted. She claims Kiara used her name and altered the paperwork after their consultation.""
Tasha closed her eyes.
"Can she prove it?""
"She has an email trail and a recorded voice message.""
Tasha looked toward Maya's bedroom.
"What does the recording say?""
Officer Reynolds lowered his voice.
"She says it contains a conversation between Kiara and Derek.""
Tasha froze.
"Derek?""
"Yes.""
"About what?""
Another pause.
Then the officer said:
"About the reason they wanted Maya moved into that apartment in the first place.""
Tasha gripped the phone.
"Play it.""
"I can't send you investigative material directly. But Vanessa has agreed to provide a formal statement.""
Tasha swallowed.
"Does Derek know about the recording?""
"I believe he does now.""
As if on cue, another call appeared on her screen.
Derek.
Tasha answered the second line.
"What?""
His voice sounded desperate.
"Tasha, you need to listen to me before you hear that recording.""
"Why?""
"Because there's something in it that isn't what it sounds like.""
Tasha looked toward her daughter's bedroom.
Then she asked the question she had been avoiding all day.
"Derek, what exactly were you planning to do with Maya?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he whispered:
"I was trying to protect her from something.""
Tasha's blood ran cold.
"Protect her from what?""
Derek inhaled shakily.
"From the truth about why Kiara wanted to become her mother.""
May you like
And before Tasha could respond, he added:
"Because Kiara isn't the only person who lied about Maya's family.""
