Chapter 3: The Signature on the Paper

Tasha was still standing behind the school when the security employee finally managed to access the camera recordings.
"Come inside," he said.
"I found something.""
Tasha followed him into a small office.
A monitor flickered above a desk crowded with paperwork.
The employee opened the footage from the rear gate.
There she was.
Kiara.
Walking calmly beside Maya.
The child was holding her backpack with both hands.
Kiara stopped near the gate, looked around, and then led Maya toward the dark blue SUV.
Tasha leaned toward the screen.
"Can you zoom in?""
The employee adjusted the footage.
The image became clearer.
Tasha could see Maya turn her head toward the school building.
She could see the little girl pause.
Then Kiara bent down, said something, and took her hand again.
Tasha pressed her lips together.
"Play that part again.""
The employee rewound it.
Maya looked back.
Kiara leaned closer.
Maya finally followed her.
Tasha stared at the screen.
"She was looking for me.""
Nobody answered.
"She was looking for me, and that woman told her to keep walking.""
The employee lowered his eyes.
Tasha stepped away from the monitor.
"Can you tell where the car went?""
"We have another camera near the parking entrance.""
"Show me.""
The employee opened another recording.
The SUV appeared at the edge of the frame.
It stopped briefly.
A man approached the driver's window.
He handed Kiara something.
Then the vehicle pulled away.
Tasha leaned closer.
"Who is that?""
The employee enlarged the image.
The man's face remained partially obscured, but his clothes were visible.
A gray jacket.
Dark trousers.
A school identification lanyard.
Tasha turned toward Mrs. Carter.
"Do you recognize him?""
Mrs. Carter stared at the screen.
Her expression changed.
"That's Mr. Lewis.""
"Who is Mr. Lewis?""
"Our facilities coordinator.""
Tasha looked back at the footage.
"Why was he handing Kiara something?""
Mrs. Carter didn't know.
The employee paused the recording.
"There's another detail.""
He opened the camera log.
"Mr. Lewis requested access to the rear gate earlier this morning.""
Tasha turned sharply.
"At what time?""
"Just before school started.""
"Why?""
"He said there was a maintenance delivery.""
Tasha stared at him.
"Was there?""
The employee shook his head.
"No delivery was logged.""
The room became very quiet.
Tasha felt the anger in her chest change into something colder.
This hadn't been a spontaneous pickup.
Someone had prepared for it.
Someone had made sure the back gate was available.
And someone had made sure the school would release Maya without calling her mother.
At the same time, Kiara parked outside a small café several streets away.
Maya was still in the back seat.
"Can I have some water?"" she asked.
Kiara opened her bag and handed her a bottle.
"Here you go.""
Maya took a small sip.
"Can we go home now?""
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
Kiara checked her phone.
Derek had called twice.
She ignored both calls.
Instead, she opened their earlier messages.
*DEREK: The school has the paperwork.*
*KIARA: And Tasha?*
*DEREK: I'll handle her.*
Kiara read the second message again.
She had saved a screenshot of it the previous night.
It was supposed to be proof that Derek supported her.
Now it looked more like proof that he wanted to stay out of trouble.
She called him.
He answered immediately.
"What are you doing?""
Kiara lowered her voice.
"Keeping Maya with me, like we agreed.""
"I told you not to go through the back gate.""
"You told me to collect her.""
"I told you to take her home.""
"You didn't say anything about which gate.""
Derek exhaled sharply.
"Don't play games with me.""
Kiara glanced at Maya through the rearview mirror.
"She's right here.""
"Put her on the phone.""
Kiara frowned.
"Why?""
"Because I want to talk to my daughter.""
"She's drinking water.""
"Kiara.""
His voice was different now.
Not affectionate.
Not reassuring.
It was the voice of a man who had realized that a decision he made privately might soon become public.
Kiara tightened her grip on the phone.
"You said you wanted her to spend time with me.""
"I said I wanted to help with the arrangements.""
"You signed the authorization.""
"That doesn't mean you can start making decisions on your own.""
Kiara's eyes narrowed.
"Interesting. Yesterday, you said I was the only person who understood what Maya needed.""
"That's enough.""
"No, Derek. You don't get to use me when you need help and then pretend I'm a stranger when Tasha gets angry.""
Derek went quiet.
Then he said something she hadn't expected.
"Did you tell Maya to call you Mom?""
Kiara's expression froze.
She looked into the rearview mirror.
Maya was watching her.
"No," Kiara answered.
But she knew the question had exposed something.
Because the previous weekend, when Maya had accidentally called her by her first name, Kiara had gently corrected her.
She had said that she didn't mind being called Mom.
She had even suggested that Maya could use that name whenever she wanted.
Derek had been standing in the doorway.
He hadn't objected.
Not once.
"Listen to me," Derek said.
"Bring Maya to the house. Now.""
Kiara ended the call.
She sat motionless for several seconds.
Then she turned toward Maya.
"Sweetheart, do you know what Daddy and I are trying to do?""
Maya shook her head.
"Make sure everyone gets along.""
Maya thought about that.
"But Mommy said everyone already gets along.""
Kiara looked away.
Back at the school, Tasha had stopped asking questions and started collecting evidence.
She photographed the camera timestamps.
She requested a copy of the authorization.
She wrote down the names of every employee who had handled Maya's release.
Mrs. Carter watched her from behind the desk.
"You're making this much bigger than it needs to be.""
Tasha slowly turned.
"Much bigger?""
"Your daughter is with someone her father trusts.""
"Then why is Derek refusing to tell me where she is?""
Mrs. Carter had no answer.
Tasha placed her phone on the counter.
"Show me the document Kiara used.""
Mrs. Carter hesitated.
"We've already verified it.""
"Show me.""
After a moment, the receptionist opened the file.
Tasha read every line.
Derek's name.
His signature.
The date.
The authorized pickup arrangement.
Then she stopped.
At the bottom of the page, beneath the printed authorization, was a sentence she hadn't noticed before.
*The authorized adult may collect the child and transport her to an alternate residence when necessary.*
Tasha looked up.
"Who added this?""
Mrs. Carter frowned.
"It was included in the document.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
She pointed to the final paragraph.
"Was this part on the original form?""
Mrs. Carter took the page.
"I don't know.""
Tasha's eyes narrowed.
"You accepted a document without checking whether it had been altered?""
"It carried the father's signature.""
"His signature is on the first page. This paragraph is on the second.""
Mrs. Carter went pale.
Tasha turned the paper over.
There was a second signature at the bottom.
Not Derek's.
Kiara's.
And beside it was a date from three days earlier.
Tasha felt her throat tighten.
Three days.
Kiara had prepared this in advance.
She hadn't simply shown up at the school with a card.
She had arranged the paperwork, secured access to the rear gate, and obtained Derek's cooperation.
Tasha took a photograph of the entire document.
Then she called Derek again.
This time, he answered on the first ring.
"I've seen the authorization," Tasha said.
"Good. Then you know I approved it.""
"I also saw the extra paragraph.""
Silence.
"Who added the alternate residence clause, Derek?""
He didn't answer.
Tasha looked down at Kiara's signature.
"Was it you?""
Still nothing.
Then Derek spoke.
"There's something you need to understand about Kiara.""
Tasha's fingers tightened around the phone.
"What?""
"She wasn't supposed to take Maya to the house.""
Tasha went completely still.
"Then where was she supposed to take her?""
Derek hesitated.
And in that hesitation, Tasha understood something far worse than a missed pickup.
Derek knew there was another destination.
He knew about it before Maya ever left the classroom.
And he had deliberately kept it from her.
"Tell me where my daughter is going," Tasha said.
Derek lowered his voice.
May you like
"Because the place Kiara was supposed to take her is—"
*The call disconnected.*
