Today She Calls Me Mom / Chapter 11 / 11

Chapter 10: The Mother Maya Chose

"Because Kiara isn't the only person who lied about Maya's family.""

Tasha stood motionless in the middle of her kitchen.

Derek's words echoed through her head.

"What does that mean?""

He exhaled.

"I need to explain something.""

"Then explain it.""

"Not over the phone.""

Tasha looked toward Maya's bedroom.

Her daughter was asleep.

For the first time in days, she had fallen asleep without waking up to check whether her mother was still there.

Tasha wasn't going to let Derek disturb that peace.

"You have five minutes," she said.

"And you're going to tell me the truth.""

Derek arrived twenty minutes later.

He stood in the doorway, holding a brown envelope.

Tasha didn't invite him to sit.

"What's in there?""

"Documents.""

"More documents?""

He looked down.

"Yes.""

Tasha crossed her arms.

"Start talking.""

Derek placed the envelope on the kitchen counter.

"Before Maya was born, Kiara and I knew each other.""

Tasha stared at him.

"How well?""

"She was a friend. We worked at the same company for a while.""

"That was before I met you?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because it wasn't important.""

Tasha gave a short, humorless laugh.

"Apparently, it was important enough for her to be involved in my daughter's life.""

Derek rubbed his forehead.

"Kiara knew about our relationship from the beginning. She knew when Maya was born. She even visited us at the hospital.""

Tasha frowned.

"That doesn't sound familiar.""

"You were exhausted. There were a lot of people around.""

"I would remember someone like Kiara.""

Derek looked away.

"She came once.""

Tasha stared at him.

Then she remembered something.

A woman had visited the hospital shortly after Maya's birth.

She had brought flowers.

She had stood near the door and spoken briefly with Derek.

Tasha had been recovering from an emergency procedure and barely remembered the afternoon.

But she remembered the flowers.

White lilies.

And a card.

Congratulations. Some people are meant to be parents.

At the time, she had thought it was an odd message.

Now the memory felt different.

"Was that her?""

Derek nodded.

Tasha stepped away from the counter.

"What was she doing at the hospital?""

"She was congratulating me.""

"Not us?""

Derek didn't answer.

Tasha looked at him.

"That's when this started, wasn't it?""

He lowered his head.

"Kiara always believed she would have a family with me.""

Tasha felt a chill move through her.

"Even after you married me?""

"She said she had moved on.""

"But she hadn't.""

Derek opened the envelope.

Inside were several printed emails, photographs, and a copy of the original residence application.

He placed the photographs on the counter.

The first showed Derek and Kiara standing outside a restaurant.

The date was almost a year before Maya's school pickup.

The second showed them inside the apartment building.

The third showed Kiara holding a set of keys.

Tasha looked up.

"You were seeing her while we were married?""

Derek shook his head.

"Not like that.""

"Then explain the photographs.""

"We were discussing the apartment.""

"Why?""

"Because I wanted to make arrangements for Maya.""

Tasha stared at him.

"How long have you been planning this?""

Derek sat down.

"Months.""

The answer hurt more than she expected.

Months.

While she packed Maya's lunches.

While she took her to school.

While she attended parent meetings.

While she sat beside her bed during nights when Maya couldn't sleep.

Derek had been planning another household.

A household where Kiara would take the place of the woman doing all those things.

Tasha looked at the photographs again.

"Why?""

Derek's eyes filled.

"Because I thought Maya needed more stability.""

Tasha's voice became very quiet.

"She had stability.""

"I know.""

"She had a home.""

"I know.""

"She had a mother.""

Derek looked down.

"I know.""

Tasha pushed the photographs away.

"Then what were you trying to fix?""

He didn't answer.

The next afternoon, Tasha met Officer Reynolds and Vanessa Cole at a local office.

Vanessa looked nothing like the intimidating woman Tasha had imagined.

She wore a gray cardigan and carried a large folder.

She appeared nervous.

"Mrs. Tasha," she said, "I owe you an apology.""

Tasha didn't sit immediately.

"Tell me what you know.""

Vanessa opened the folder.

"I met Derek through Kiara. She told me they were trying to create a more stable arrangement for Maya.""

"Did she tell you I agreed?""

"No. At first, she said you were still discussing it.""

"Then why did you prepare the application?""

"I prepared a draft based on information Derek provided.""

Vanessa removed a document.

"This was the original version.""

Tasha examined it.

It listed both parents as responsible for decisions concerning Maya.

It also included a section requiring written agreement from both parents before any change in residence.

Vanessa continued.

"Kiara asked me to make several changes. I refused because she didn't have your consent.""

"Then why is my signature on the other document?""

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

"She sent me a photograph of a signed page. I later discovered it had been altered.""

"Did you know?""

"Not when I first saw it.""

Tasha leaned forward.

"Why didn't you contact me?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I should have.""

"Yes. You should have.""

Officer Reynolds intervened.

"Can you explain the recording?""

Vanessa nodded.

She took out her phone.

"I recorded the conversation because I became concerned about what Kiara was asking me to prepare.""

She played the audio.

Kiara's voice came through first.

*KIARA:* "Once Maya starts staying with me, she'll get used to the arrangement.""

Then Derek.

*DEREK:* "Tasha isn't going to agree.""

*KIARA:* "She doesn't have to agree forever. She just has to stop making everything difficult.""

Derek sounded uneasy.

*DEREK:* "That's not what we discussed.""

*KIARA:* "You said you wanted Maya with us.""

*DEREK:* "I said I wanted more time with my daughter.""

Then Kiara spoke again.

Her voice was calm.

Almost cheerful.

*KIARA:* "Today she calls me Mom. Tasha can arrive late and look crazy.""

Tasha stopped breathing.

It was the exact thought Kiara had carried when she walked Maya out of school.

Vanessa paused the recording.

"There's more.""

Tasha nodded.

The recording continued.

*DEREK:* "Don't say that.""

*KIARA:* "Why? You know how she gets. She'll arrive shouting, and everyone will think she's the problem.""

*DEREK:* "I don't want Maya caught in the middle.""

*KIARA:* "Then let me handle it.""

A few seconds of silence followed.

Then Derek said:

*DEREK:* "And the original agreement?""

*KIARA:* "Nobody needs to see it.""

The recording ended.

Tasha stared at the phone.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

The cruelest part wasn't that Kiara had wanted to be called Mom.

It was that she had planned to make Tasha look unstable for asking where her own daughter was.

Vanessa closed the folder.

"There's another thing you should know.""

Tasha looked at her.

"Go on.""

"Kiara told me that Derek had promised her a future with Maya. She believed that if Maya became comfortable living with her, Derek would eventually make the arrangement permanent.""

Tasha shook her head.

"She wanted my daughter to become proof that she belonged in Derek's life.""

Vanessa nodded.

"That's how it appeared.""

Officer Reynolds took the recording and the supporting documents for the investigation.

Tasha thanked Vanessa.

But before leaving, she turned back.

"Why did you finally decide to come forward?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because I heard the recording again last night.""

She swallowed.

"I realized Maya was the only person nobody had asked what she wanted.""

That evening, Derek came to Tasha's house.

He stood outside for several minutes before she opened the door.

"I heard you have the recording," he said.

"I do.""

"I want to explain.""

"You've had plenty of opportunities.""

Derek looked exhausted.

"I know.""

Tasha remained in the doorway.

"Why did you let Kiara do this?""

He looked at the floor.

"Because I liked being important to someone.""

Tasha frowned.

"What?""

"Kiara made me feel like I was the person who could fix everything. She told me I was a good father. She said Maya deserved more time with me.""

Tasha folded her arms.

"She could have said those things without trying to replace me.""

"I know.""

"She could have loved Maya without making my daughter believe I was disappearing.""

"I know.""

Derek's eyes filled.

"I thought I could make everyone happy.""

Tasha shook her head.

"No. You thought you could make decisions for everyone and avoid the consequences.""

He nodded.

"I was wrong.""

"Yes, you were.""

He looked past her.

"Can I see Maya?""

Tasha considered the question.

Then she called her daughter.

"Maya, sweetheart. Daddy is here.""

Little footsteps sounded down the hallway.

Maya appeared wearing pink pajamas.

"Daddy?""

Derek crouched.

"Hey, princess.""

Maya approached slowly.

"Are you taking me somewhere?""

Derek's face crumpled.

"No, sweetheart. I'm not taking you anywhere.""

"Can I stay with Mommy?""

"Of course.""

Maya looked at him carefully.

"Can you come visit?""

Derek nodded.

"If your mommy agrees, we can arrange that.""

Maya reached out and hugged him.

Tasha watched.

She wasn't going to punish her daughter for loving her father.

But love didn't mean pretending nothing had happened.

Derek kissed Maya's forehead.

Then he stood.

"I'll leave you both alone.""

Tasha nodded.

As he walked toward his car, she said one final thing.

"Derek.""

He turned.

"Whatever happens next, Maya doesn't need another person promising her a perfect family. She needs adults who tell her the truth.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

This time, Tasha hoped he meant it.

Several weeks passed.

The school completed its internal review.

Mrs. Carter was removed from pickup authorization duties while the school investigated the release. Mr. Bennett was required to cooperate with the review of the altered records.

The authorities continued examining the documents, messages, payments, and recording.

Vanessa provided her original files.

Kiara was questioned about the altered authorization and the residence application.

The apartment was no longer presented as a planned second home for Maya.

And the temporary arrangements involving Maya's father were handled through proper channels.

Derek began attending scheduled visits.

At first, Maya was quiet around him.

But slowly, she began asking about his work, his car, and the little garden he had promised to show her.

Tasha never stopped her from loving him.

She simply stopped allowing him to make decisions without her.

One Saturday morning, Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror while Tasha brushed her hair.

"Mommy?""

"Yes, baby?""

"Do you think Kiara wanted to be my mommy because she didn't like you?""

Tasha paused.

She placed the brush on the counter.

"Sometimes grown-ups want something so badly that they forget to think about how their choices hurt other people.""

Maya considered that.

"But you're my mommy.""

Tasha smiled.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"And nobody can change that?""

Tasha crouched and looked into her daughter's eyes.

"Nobody needs to change it. I'm your mommy because I love you, I take care of you, and I've been here through all the little things and the big things. You never have to earn that love.""

Maya wrapped her arms around her mother's neck.

"I love you, Mommy.""

Tasha closed her eyes.

"I love you too.""

That afternoon, they attended a school event.

The same front entrance.

The same reception desk.

The same place where everything had begun.

Mrs. Carter approached them.

She looked nervous.

"Tasha, may I speak with you?""

Tasha stopped.

"What is it?""

Mrs. Carter glanced at Maya.

"I wanted to apologize.""

Tasha said nothing.

Mrs. Carter continued.

"I should have called you. I should have checked the documents more carefully. I thought I was following instructions, but I understand now that I didn't ask the most important question.""

"Which question?""

"Whether Maya's mother knew her child was leaving.""

Tasha looked down at her daughter.

Then back at Mrs. Carter.

"Please remember that question the next time another parent walks through that door.""

Mrs. Carter nodded.

"I will.""

Maya tugged at Tasha's sleeve.

"Mommy, can we go inside?""

Tasha smiled.

"Of course.""

They walked through the entrance together.

No hidden documents.

No secret arrangements.

No one holding Maya's hand while pretending her mother didn't exist.

At the classroom door, Maya turned back.

"Mommy?""

Tasha looked up.

"Yes?""

Maya smiled.

"You're my favorite person to come pick me up.""

Tasha laughed softly.

"That's good, because I plan to keep doing it.""

Maya ran into the classroom.

Tasha watched her disappear among the other children.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Derek.

*DEREK: Thank you for letting me see her. I'm trying to do better.*

Tasha read it.

Then she put the phone away.

Maybe Derek would change.

Maybe he wouldn't.

That was no longer something she could control.

What she could control was the truth Maya grew up knowing.

That she was never responsible for keeping adults happy.

That love was not a competition.

And that a signature on a piece of paper could never replace the years of bedtime stories, packed lunches, fevers, scraped knees, whispered reassurances, and a mother's steady presence.

Tasha looked through the classroom window one last time.

Maya was laughing.

Safe.

Home.

And for the first time since that terrible afternoon, Tasha could finally breathe.

May you like

*Kiara had wanted Maya to call her Mom.*

*But the moment Maya needed someone to come looking for her, it was her real mother who never stopped.*
