Chapter 8: The Promise Margaret Left Behind

Richard held the document beneath the lobby lights.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

The paper was old, its edges slightly yellowed, but Margaret's handwriting remained unmistakable.

At the top was a title:

*THE MARGARET CARTER FAMILY LEGACY AGREEMENT.*

Below it was a paragraph establishing a permanent scholarship fund for children from families experiencing financial hardship.

Richard read further.

Then his eyes stopped at a sentence.

*Upon reaching adulthood, Emily Carter shall be granted the opportunity to serve as the foundation's beneficiary representative and participate in the administration of the legacy fund.*

Thomas leaned closer.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at him.

“It means Margaret wanted Emily involved in the foundation.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“She wanted more than that.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Explain.””

Victoria took a breath.

“Margaret and I discussed the foundation's future. She wanted someone outside the immediate family to help manage it. She believed personal wealth could corrupt good intentions.””

Richard frowned.

“Margaret never told me that.””

“Perhaps she didn't want to.””

Thomas looked at the document.

“Why do you have this?””

Victoria tightened her grip on her handbag.

“Margaret gave it to me before she died.””

Richard stared at her.

“Why would she give you an original legal document?””

“Because she trusted me.””

Richard read the final paragraph.

There was another signature.

Not Margaret's.

A witness signature.

*VICTORIA HAYES.*

Thomas slowly turned toward his wife.

“You signed this?””

Victoria nodded.

“I witnessed it.””

Richard examined the page.

“Where is the original agreement?””

“This is the original.””

“Then why wasn't it included in the foundation records?””

Victoria looked away.

“Because the agreement was never finalized.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“What do you mean?””

“The foundation's lawyers never completed the transfer.””

Richard immediately looked at Martin.

“Get legal counsel on the phone.””

Martin stepped away.

Thomas took the document.

He studied the date.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“This was signed eight years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because it wasn't relevant to our marriage.””

Thomas let out a disbelieving laugh.

“You've been using my name to gain access to this hotel, influencing employees, and now I find out you were involved in my friend's wife's private foundation. You don't think that's relevant?””

Victoria's face tightened.

“Don't pretend you're innocent. You benefited from every relationship I built.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I never asked you to hurt people.””

Richard interrupted.

“There's something missing.””

He pointed toward the final page.

“Margaret's signature is here. Victoria's is here. But where is the attorney's certification?””

Victoria looked down.

Richard continued.

“This document was never executed as a legal amendment.””

Victoria said nothing.

“So why have you been presenting it as proof of authority?””

Thomas looked at his wife.

“You've been using this document to make decisions for the foundation?””

Victoria's voice rose.

“I was protecting Margaret's wishes!””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“By hiding the document from her family?””

Victoria snapped.

“Because you never listened to her!””

The words echoed through the lobby.

Richard stood motionless.

Victoria continued.

“Margaret wanted the foundation to become independent. She didn't want you controlling everything. She thought Emily should have a voice, and you kept treating her like a child who didn't understand business.””

Richard's expression changed.

He looked down at the document.

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

Thomas noticed.

“Richard?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Margaret and I had disagreements. But she never asked me to remove Emily from anything.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Of course not. You always believed you knew what was best.””

Martin returned with a lawyer on speakerphone.

Richard put the call on speaker.

“Counsel, we're looking at a document signed by my late wife and witnessed by Victoria Hayes. It concerns the foundation's legacy fund. Can you review the legal status?””

The attorney asked for the document to be photographed and emailed.

Martin quickly complied.

A few minutes later, the attorney spoke.

“Mr. Carter, I can confirm that this document is not a completed amendment. There is no filing or board approval attached to it.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Can it establish any authority for Mrs. Hayes?””

“No. Not by itself.””

Victoria's face fell.

The attorney continued.

“However, it does establish that Mrs. Hayes was present when your wife expressed certain wishes. We should investigate why the document was withheld from the foundation's records.””

Richard nodded.

“Thank you. Please begin that review immediately.””

The call ended.

Thomas turned toward Victoria.

“You've been lying to everyone.””

She looked at him.

“I was trying to preserve something Margaret cared about.””

“Then why did you put that threatening note in Emily's room?””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“Because I wanted her to understand that she couldn't simply walk back into this family and take control.””

Richard stared at her.

“Emily has never asked to control anything.””

Victoria looked away.

Thomas stepped closer.

“What were you afraid she'd discover?””

Victoria didn't answer.

Richard picked up the leather folder.

He examined the papers inside.

There were photocopies of foundation correspondence, handwritten notes, and a list of scholarship beneficiaries.

One page caught his attention.

It contained several names.

Next to each name were handwritten amounts.

Richard frowned.

“Martin, what are these figures?””

Martin leaned over.

“Those appear to be scholarship allocations.””

Richard scanned the list.

Some students had received significantly less than the amounts originally approved.

Others had been marked as ineligible.

He turned the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

*Remaining balance transferred to administrative reserve.*

Richard looked at Victoria.

“Where did the money go?””

She shook her head.

“Those were administrative decisions.””

“By whom?””

Victoria looked toward Thomas.

Then she whispered:

“Ask your foundation treasurer.””

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Victoria looked him directly in the eyes.

“Your brother.””

Richard's face went pale.

His younger brother, Michael, had been responsible for overseeing the foundation's financial records for years.

He had been one of Margaret's closest confidants.

And he had signed the annual financial statements.

Thomas quietly stepped back.

Richard pulled out his phone.

He called Michael.

The call rang several times.

Finally, his brother answered.

“Richard? What's going on?””

Richard looked at the document.

“I need you to answer a question.””

“Sure.””

“Did you transfer money from Margaret's scholarship fund into an administrative reserve?””

There was silence.

Then Michael asked:

“Where did you get that information?””

May you like

Richard stared at Victoria.

And in that moment, he realized she wasn't the only person who had been hiding something.
