Chapter 3: The Owner Walks Through the Door
The lobby doors opened.
Richard Carter entered with the measured stride of a man who had spent forty years building a business from nothing.
His silver hair was neatly combed. His navy suit fit perfectly. A hotel executive walked beside him, carrying a tablet and speaking quietly.
But Richard wasn't listening.
His eyes were fixed on Emily.
“Sweetheart.””
Emily's expression broke.
“Dad.””
He crossed the marble floor and wrapped one arm around his daughter.
With his other hand, he gently touched Lily's blanket.
“Let me see my granddaughter.””
Emily carefully tilted the baby toward him.
Richard smiled.
“Hello, little princess.””
Then he noticed the red mark spreading across Emily's left cheek.
His smile vanished.
He looked at her face.
“Is that where she hit you?””
Emily nodded.
Richard didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
“Who did it?””
Emily glanced toward Victoria.
The woman in the pink dress suddenly seemed much less confident.
Richard turned.
Victoria forced a polite smile.
“Mr. Carter. What a surprise.””
Richard stared at her.
“Do I know you?””
Victoria blinked.
“I'm Victoria Hayes. My husband is Thomas Hayes. We attended your foundation dinner last year.””
Richard's expression remained unchanged.
“I see.””
Victoria extended her hand.
“I'm sure there's been some misunderstanding. Your daughter was creating a scene, and I was simply trying to protect the atmosphere of your establishment.””
Richard didn't shake her hand.
“My daughter?””
Victoria's hand slowly dropped.
“Yes. She said she knew the owner.””
Richard looked at Emily.
“Emily is my daughter.””
The silence that followed was almost physical.
Daniel took a step backward.
Victoria's lips parted.
Richard turned toward the receptionist.
“What's your name?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Daniel Brooks, sir.””
“How long have you worked here?””
“Three years.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“And in those three years, have you learned that guests are supposed to be treated with respect?””
Daniel looked down.
“Of course, sir.””
“Then why is my daughter standing in this lobby holding a newborn while you point at the exit?””
Daniel immediately began speaking.
“Mr. Carter, I can explain. Mrs. Hayes has been a loyal guest for many years, and she reported that—”
Richard raised one hand.
“Stop.””
Daniel fell silent.
“Did you check my daughter's reservation?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I was informed there was an issue.””
“By whom?””
His eyes moved toward Victoria.
Richard followed the movement.
“Mrs. Hayes?””
Victoria gave a nervous laugh.
“This is becoming unnecessarily dramatic. I simply asked him to cancel the reservation because I didn't believe she belonged in the hotel.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“You didn't believe she belonged?””
“Her appearance was inappropriate for the establishment.””
Emily looked down at her cream blouse and brown handbag.
She had dressed comfortably for a long drive with a newborn.
There was nothing inappropriate about her clothing.
Richard stepped closer to Victoria.
“Are you telling me you decided my daughter wasn't good enough to stay here?””
Victoria lifted her chin.
“I didn't know she was your daughter.””
Richard stared at her.
“That is precisely the problem.””
He turned toward the executive beside him.
“Mr. Lewis, I want the lobby security footage preserved immediately. Every camera.
Every angle. Starting thirty minutes before my daughter arrived.””
The executive nodded.
“Of course, sir.””
Richard continued.
“I also want the reservation history, the cancellation request, and the name of every employee who authorized it.””
Daniel's face had become pale.
“Sir, there was no actual cancellation. I only placed a temporary hold.””
Richard looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victoria stepped in.
“Mr. Carter, surely we can resolve this privately. There's no reason to involve the entire management team.””
Richard slowly turned toward her.
“You struck a woman holding a six-week-old baby in my lobby. Then you instructed my employee to cancel her reservation.””
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
“I didn't hit her that hard.””
Emily stared at her.
The words seemed to cut deeper than the slap.
Richard looked at his daughter.
“Emily, did she say that?””
Emily nodded.
Richard took a breath.
Then he turned to the security guards.
“Please make sure nobody leaves until we have documented everyone's account.””
Victoria's eyes widened.
“You can't detain me!””
Richard remained calm.
“I'm not detaining you. I'm asking you to remain here while we document an incident involving an assault and potential interference with a guest reservation.””
Victoria looked toward Daniel.
“Tell him who I am!””
Daniel didn't move.
“Daniel!””
He finally looked at her.
“Mrs. Hayes, I think you should let Mr. Carter handle this.””
Victoria's expression turned furious.
“You spineless little man!””
Richard ignored her.
He looked at the executive.
“Has the room been prepared?””
“Yes, sir. The presidential family suite is ready.””
Emily blinked.
“Dad, you booked that suite?””
Richard smiled faintly.
“Of course. I wanted you and Lily to have somewhere comfortable to rest.””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was going to spend the afternoon sitting in a parking lot with my baby.””
Richard gently touched her shoulder.
“Not today, sweetheart.””
He signaled to the concierge.
“Please take my daughter upstairs. Have the nursery attendant bring everything she needs. And make sure she has something to eat.””
Emily hesitated.
“What about you?””
Richard looked toward Victoria and Daniel.
“I have a few things to discuss.””
Emily nodded and followed the concierge toward the elevators.
But just before the doors closed, she heard Victoria speak.
“Mr. Carter, you should be careful. My husband isn't going to appreciate the way you're treating me.””
Richard turned his head.
“Then perhaps your husband should hear exactly what happened.””
Victoria's face tightened.
Daniel stared at the floor.
The elevator doors began to close.
Emily held Lily close.
For the first time since arriving at the hotel, she felt safe.
But the confrontation downstairs was far from over.
Because Richard had just received a notification on the executive's tablet.
He looked at the screen.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Wait a minute,” Richard said quietly.
“Why does this reservation show that someone accessed my daughter's private booking file three days ago?””
May you like
Daniel's face went completely white.
And when Richard read the name attached to that access record, he realized the slap in the lobby might have been only the beginning of something much worse.
