Chapter 9: The Brother Who Sold His Family
"Michael.""
Daniel's voice was low.
His son stopped several feet away.
"Hello, Dad.""
Emily stared at her brother.
Three years.
Three years without a phone call.
Three years without an explanation.
And now he was standing in the hotel lobby as if he had simply returned from a weekend trip.
"Why are you here?"" Emily asked.
Michael looked at her.
"To see the family.""
She almost laughed.
"The family?""
He glanced at the baby.
"That's your daughter?""
Emily tightened her hold.
"Don't change the subject.""
Michael shrugged.
"Congratulations, by the way.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Why are you named on these financial records?""
Michael's smile faded.
"What records?""
Daniel held up the bank authorization.
"Don't insult me.""
Michael glanced at it.
Then he looked at Eleanor.
The older woman gave him a small nod.
Emily saw it.
Her brother had expected to find Eleanor in control.
Instead, he had walked into the middle of an investigation.
"What happened?"" Michael asked.
Daniel answered.
"You tell me.""
Michael sighed.
"Look, Dad, I can explain.""
"Then do it.""
Michael glanced around at the guests.
"Not here.""
Daniel pointed toward the security monitor.
"Your mother and I have spent the last hour discovering that someone used company money to purchase interests in my hotel group, forged legal documents, and attempted to transfer your sister's inheritance. You can explain it right here.""
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Nobody was trying to hurt Emily.""
Emily stepped forward.
"Someone forged my signature.""
Michael looked at her.
"It wasn't personal.""
Those three words hit harder than she expected.
"Not personal?""
He shrugged.
"You have your own life. You don't even work in the hotel business. What would you do with an entire company?""
Emily stared at him.
"I didn't ask anyone to steal it for me.""
"Exactly. You don't care about it.""
"I care about what Dad built.""
Michael laughed.
"Then why have you never helped him run it?""
Emily shook her head.
"Because I wanted my own life.""
Michael threw his hands up.
"See? That's what I'm talking about. You walk away from everything, and then you inherit it anyway.""
Daniel's voice became sharp.
"Enough.""
Michael turned toward him.
"You gave her everything!""
"I gave her an inheritance. I gave you opportunities. You chose what to do with yours.""
Michael's face reddened.
"You always treated me like I was second.""
Daniel looked genuinely hurt.
"Michael, I offered you a position in the company. You quit after six months because you didn't want to answer to anyone.""
"Because you never trusted me!""
"Trust is earned.""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"And now look at you. You're ready to destroy this entire family over some paperwork.""
Emily looked at her brother.
"Do you understand what happened to me today?""
Michael glanced toward the reception desk.
"What?""
"Your grandmother shoved me while I was holding your niece. The hotel manager tried to throw me outside. I was treated like I didn't belong here.""
Michael looked uncomfortable.
"That's unfortunate.""
Emily's eyes filled.
"Unfortunate?""
She stepped closer.
"I called Dad because I had nowhere else to turn. I was holding a twelve-day-old baby, and people were humiliating me in front of strangers. And you're standing here defending the people who did it.""
Michael looked away.
"I didn't know.""
"Did you know they were planning to change the trust?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you know they used my signature?""
Michael rubbed the back of his neck.
"I knew there was an arrangement.""
Emily felt her chest tighten.
"What arrangement?""
He sighed.
"Victoria would receive the management rights. I would receive a controlling interest in the company after the restructuring. Eleanor would remain as an adviser.""
Victoria stared at him.
"You were going to take the hotel from Emily?""
Michael shrugged.
"It made sense.""
"Did you ask me?"" Emily demanded.
"You weren't interested.""
"That wasn't your decision!""
Michael's voice rose.
"You're acting like this was some huge betrayal. I was trying to secure my future.""
Daniel looked at his son.
"By taking your sister's future?""
Michael stared at the floor.
Eleanor suddenly interrupted.
"Don't listen to them, Michael. They're twisting everything.""
Michael turned toward her.
"You said the transfer was already approved.""
Eleanor froze.
Victoria looked at her mother.
"Approved by whom?""
Michael shook his head.
"You told me the legal paperwork was complete.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"It was not.""
Michael looked at him.
"What?""
"The amendment is legally questionable. The signature verification was never completed, and the witness declaration appears fraudulent.""
Michael's face changed.
"You told me it was done!""
Eleanor snapped.
"I told you what you needed to know.""
Michael took a step toward her.
"You said I'd have control of the hotel.""
"I was working on it.""
"You said the money had already been transferred!""
Daniel raised his head.
"How much money?""
Michael looked toward his father.
Silence.
Daniel repeated the question.
"How much money did you receive?""
Michael swallowed.
"About six hundred thousand.""
Emily closed her eyes.
Six hundred thousand dollars.
Her brother had accepted that much money to help take something from her.
"Where is it?"" Daniel asked.
Michael looked away.
"It's gone.""
"On what?""
"Investments.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"What investments?""
Michael hesitated.
Then he said, "A company called Sterling Capital.""
Margaret quickly searched the name on her laptop.
A moment later, she looked up.
"Mr. Carter, Sterling Capital is one of the companies that received payments from Northbridge.""
Daniel stared at Michael.
"You invested the money back into the same network?""
Michael frowned.
"I didn't know.""
Eleanor suddenly raised her voice.
"That's enough! This is becoming a circus.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"No, Eleanor. This is becoming a criminal investigation.""
She looked at him with contempt.
"You think you can frighten me?""
"I'm not trying to frighten you.""
He took his phone out.
"I'm contacting our attorneys and the authorities.""
Eleanor's face changed.
Then she looked at Victoria.
"Victoria, you have to stop this.""
Victoria shook her head.
"I can't.""
"You can. You're the general manager. Tell him to stop.""
Victoria wiped her tears.
"Mother, I don't want the hotel if this is what it takes to get it.""
Eleanor stared at her daughter.
For the first time, she seemed to realize that Victoria was no longer under her control.
Michael suddenly turned toward Emily.
"Can we talk?""
Emily shook her head.
"No.""
"Just five minutes.""
"You've had three years.""
Michael looked desperate.
"Emily, please. I didn't know they were going to treat you like that.""
"But you knew they were taking my inheritance.""
He lowered his voice.
"I can fix this.""
"How?""
"I'll give the money back.""
"That's not enough.""
"I'll tell them everything.""
Daniel watched his son carefully.
"Everything?""
Michael nodded.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He removed a small USB drive.
"I recorded some conversations with Eleanor and Thomas. I started recording after I realized they were hiding things from me.""
Thomas went pale.
Eleanor's expression turned murderous.
"Michael, don't you dare.""
He ignored her.
"The recordings explain who forged the documents and why they needed Emily's signature.""
Daniel held out his hand.
"Give it to me.""
Michael hesitated.
"There's one condition.""
Daniel stared at him.
"What condition?""
Michael looked at Emily.
"I want you to forgive me.""
Emily felt tears slide down her cheeks.
She looked at the brother she had once protected, the boy who used to sit beside her when their mother was sick, the person she had spent years hoping would come home.
Then she looked at her sleeping daughter.
"I can't promise you that.""
Michael lowered the USB drive.
"Emily...""
"I can promise you that I'll listen to the truth. But forgiveness isn't something you can demand.""
He slowly placed the drive in Daniel's hand.
Daniel gave it to Thomas.
"Can you verify what's on this?""
Thomas nodded.
"I can.""
James brought a laptop.
The USB drive was connected.
Several audio files appeared.
Daniel selected the first recording.
Eleanor's voice filled the lobby.
"...Once Emily signs the transfer, Daniel won't be able to reverse it. Victoria gets control, Michael gets his share, and we finally stop pretending that a baby has any claim to a business she can't even understand.""
Emily went cold.
Another voice answered.
Thomas.
"That isn't what the trust agreement allows.""
Eleanor replied.
"Then change the agreement.""
Thomas sounded nervous.
"And Daniel?""
A pause.
Then Eleanor spoke.
"Daniel will never know until it's too late.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Victoria looked as if someone had struck her.
"Mother...""
Eleanor stared at the laptop.
Then she lunged toward it.
"Turn that off!""
James stepped between her and the desk.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
"Play the next recording.""
Thomas selected another file.
This time, Michael's voice could be heard.
"Are you sure Emily won't find out?""
Eleanor answered immediately.
"She doesn't need to know anything. By the time she discovers the changes, the company will already be under our control.""
Then Thomas spoke.
"There's one problem. The original trust has a protection clause. If the beneficiary has a child, any unauthorized transfer triggers an automatic review.""
Daniel suddenly looked up.
Emily froze.
Her daughter?
Thomas nodded slowly.
"The clause was included specifically to protect future generations of the family.""
Eleanor's face drained of color.
The recording continued.
"And if Emily has a child?"" Michael asked.
Eleanor answered:
"Then we make sure the child never becomes part of the ownership discussion.""
Daniel slowly turned toward his granddaughter.
His expression changed from anger to something much deeper.
He looked at Emily.
Then at the tiny sleeping baby.
"That's why they were so desperate to remove you from the hotel today.""
Emily whispered, "Because of the trust?""
Thomas nodded.
"Your daughter's birth automatically activated a protective provision. The unauthorized amendment can now be challenged immediately.""
Daniel stared at the laptop.
But the next line in the recording made him go completely still.
Thomas's recorded voice said:
"There's another complication. If the trust is challenged, the court will examine the original beneficiary declaration.""
Eleanor replied:
"Then we have to destroy the original.""
The recording stopped.
Daniel slowly turned toward Thomas.
"Where is the original beneficiary declaration?""
Thomas looked terrified.
He opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
"I thought it was destroyed.""
Daniel took it.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a document bearing his original signature.
And beneath it was a second page.
A page nobody in the lobby had expected to see.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"There's something you need to know about the person who witnessed the original trust.""
Daniel read the name.
His face went completely pale.
Because the witness wasn't Eleanor.
It wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't Thomas.
It was Emily's mother.
The woman who had died thirteen years earlier.
And beside her signature was a handwritten note:
*If anything happens to me, tell Emily who her biological father really is.*
Daniel dropped the paper.
Emily stared at him.
"Dad?""
He couldn't answer.
For the first time in her life, Emily saw genuine fear in her father's eyes.
May you like
And she realized the hotel scandal had uncovered a secret far older than the stolen money.
A secret her father had kept from her for twenty-nine years.
