Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

Richard Hayes forced a laugh.

"The owner?"" he repeated.

"Madam, I think you may have misunderstood how this business works.""

Emily didn't answer.

She simply adjusted the blanket around her daughter.

The baby's cries had softened into exhausted little whimpers.

Eleanor stepped forward, apparently determined to regain control of the room.

"Richard, why are we still discussing this? Have security escort her outside.""

Richard nodded.

"Of course.""

He turned toward the security desk.

"James! Bring two officers over here.""

A tall security guard approached, followed by a younger colleague.

James Miller had worked at the Grand Windsor for eleven years. He knew Eleanor's reputation and had witnessed her mistreat employees countless times.

But he had never seen her shove a mother holding a newborn.

"What's the situation, sir?"" James asked.

Richard pointed toward Emily.

"She's refusing to leave after her reservation was canceled.""

Emily immediately spoke.

"That's not what happened. I have a confirmed reservation, and I haven't threatened anyone.""

Richard raised his voice.

"Ma'am, you're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

Eleanor folded her arms.

"People like this always have an excuse.""

James looked at Emily's face.

Then he noticed the redness on her forearm where she had struck the marble column.

"Ma'am, are you hurt?""

Emily shook her head.

"I'm fine. My daughter is frightened.""

James looked toward Richard.

"Perhaps we should review the security footage before doing anything.""

Richard's face hardened.

"That's not necessary.""

"It might be helpful.""

"I said it's not necessary.""

Eleanor snapped her fingers.

"James, I don't believe you're being paid to question management.""

The guard lowered his eyes.

"Yes, ma'am.""

Emily watched the exchange.

She understood something now.

This wasn't just one arrogant woman behaving badly.

The entire hotel seemed trained to obey her.

A guest in a navy suit approached the reception desk.

"Excuse me," he said.

"I've been standing here for five minutes. I watched that woman shove the mother. Are you seriously going to throw the victim out?""

Richard turned sharply.

"Sir, this is a private matter.""

"No, it's a public embarrassment. I've stayed here four times. I won't be staying again.""

Eleanor looked offended.

"Then perhaps you should find somewhere more suitable for yourself.""

The man shook his head and walked toward the exit.

Emily looked down at her phone.

No new message.

She considered calling her father again, but she knew him well enough to understand that he was already on his way.

He hated being interrupted during business meetings.

But he had never ignored her when she needed him.

Not once.

When Emily was sixteen, her mother had died after a long illness. Her father, Daniel Carter, had raised her while building a hospitality company from a single boutique property into an international hotel empire.

He had taught her to be independent.

He had also taught her never to confuse wealth with worth.

That was why Emily rarely mentioned her family name.

She had married a man who loved her before learning who her father was. After the marriage ended, she moved to a smaller apartment, started working independently, and built a quiet life for herself and her daughter.

She didn't want people treating her differently.

She wanted to be treated normally.

Unfortunately, that afternoon, normal respect was exactly what she couldn't get.

Richard approached her again.

"Madam, I'll give you one final opportunity to leave peacefully.""

Emily looked directly at him.

"My father told me to stay.""

Richard scoffed.

"Your father isn't here.""

"He's coming.""

"Well, until he arrives, I am responsible for this property.""

Eleanor smiled.

"Exactly. And I suggest you stop wasting our time.""

Then she reached toward Emily's handbag.

"What's that?""

Emily pulled it away.

"Don't touch my things.""

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"How dare you speak to me like that?""

"How dare you put your hands on me?""

A murmur moved through the lobby.

Richard stepped between them.

"That's enough. James, escort her out.""

James didn't move immediately.

"Mr. Hayes, perhaps we should wait a moment.""

Richard turned on him.

"Are you refusing an order?""

"No, sir. I just think—"

"Then stop thinking and do your job!""

The younger guard shifted uncomfortably.

Emily's daughter began crying again.

Emily rocked her gently.

"It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy's here.""

Eleanor looked at the baby with visible irritation.

"Honestly, this is ridiculous. The entire lobby can hear that child.""

Emily's face went pale.

"She's twelve days old.""

"And?""

Emily stared at her.

For a moment, she couldn't find words.

Then she quietly said, "I hope nobody ever makes you feel as small as you're making us feel right now.""

Eleanor laughed.

"I don't have to worry about that. I know who I am.""

A few minutes later, the revolving doors turned.

A man in a dark navy overcoat entered the lobby.

He was in his early sixties, tall, silver-haired, and carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed without raising his voice.

Two men in business suits followed him.

The receptionist looked up.

Her face went white.

"Mr. Carter...""

Richard turned.

His mouth opened slightly.

Daniel Carter walked straight across the marble floor.

He didn't look at Eleanor.

He didn't look at Richard.

He went directly to his daughter.

"Emily.""

She tried to smile.

"Dad.""

Daniel placed one hand gently on her shoulder and looked at the baby.

"There's my little girl.""

He touched the baby's tiny hand.

Then he looked at Emily's tear-streaked face.

"Are you hurt?""

"I'm okay.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Emily hesitated.

"She pushed me.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

He slowly turned toward Eleanor.

"Who?""

Eleanor recovered quickly.

"Daniel, darling, I think there's been a misunderstanding.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Do I know you?""

She blinked.

"I'm Eleanor Whitmore. My daughter Victoria is the general manager. We've met at several charity functions.""

Daniel gave a brief nod.

"Whitmore.""

Richard rushed forward.

"Mr. Carter, thank goodness you're here. We're dealing with a difficult customer who has caused a disturbance.""

Daniel didn't even look at him.

"Is that so?""

"Yes, sir. She claimed to have a reservation, but there were some concerns about her behavior.""

Emily stared at Richard.

He was actually doing it again.

Daniel slowly removed his gloves.

"Richard, did you just describe my daughter as a difficult customer?""

Richard froze.

Eleanor's face lost its color.

"My daughter?"" she whispered.

Daniel looked at Emily, then at the baby.

"This is Emily Carter. My daughter. And this little girl is my granddaughter.""

The lobby fell silent.

Richard swallowed.

"Sir, I... I didn't realize...""

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"That seems to be the problem.""

Eleanor tried to smile.

"Oh, Daniel, surely we can resolve this privately. I had no idea Emily was your daughter.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Would that have changed how you treated her?""

Eleanor opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel turned toward Richard.

"Bring me the reservation records, the cancellation history, and the security footage.""

Richard nodded frantically.

"Of course, sir.""

"And call Victoria Whitmore.""

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"Why do you need to involve my daughter?""

Daniel finally looked directly at her.

"Because I want to know why her employees believe they can throw my family out of a hotel I own.""

May you like

Then he added one more sentence.

"And because I suspect this isn't the first time they've done it.""
