Chapter 3: The Security Footage

Nobody moved.

Daniel Carter stood in the center of the lobby with his granddaughter in his arms while Emily sat on a nearby sofa.

A member of staff had brought her a glass of water and a clean blanket.

For the first time since entering the hotel, Emily could breathe.

But her father wasn't finished.

"Richard," Daniel said.

"Yes, sir?""

"Where are the records?""

Richard hurried behind the reception desk.

His fingers moved quickly across the keyboard.

"One moment, Mr. Carter.""

Daniel watched him.

"Take your time. But don't alter anything.""

Richard stopped typing.

"I wouldn't dream of doing that.""

Daniel turned toward the security supervisor.

"What's your name?""

"James Miller, sir.""

"James, I want the footage from the main lobby cameras preserved immediately. Every angle. From the time my daughter arrived until now.""

"Yes, sir.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Daniel, this is becoming unnecessarily dramatic. Emily is obviously upset, and I understand that, but there are always two sides to a story.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Then we'll hear both sides.""

"Exactly. And I'm sure Richard can explain that your daughter was being disruptive.""

Emily stood.

"I wasn't being disruptive.""

Eleanor waved a dismissive hand.

"Please, dear. Let's not make this worse.""

Daniel raised one finger.

"Don't speak to my daughter again.""

The command was quiet.

But Eleanor stepped backward.

Richard returned with a printed document.

"Here is the reservation, sir.""

Daniel accepted it.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression grew colder.

"Three nights. Presidential family suite. Fully prepaid. Special request for a crib and adjoining nursery.""

He looked at Richard.

"Who approved the cancellation?""

Richard cleared his throat.

"The cancellation was processed under a management override.""

"By whom?""

"That information is available in the system.""

"Then read it.""

Richard glanced at the screen.

His lips tightened.

"Mrs. Whitmore requested it.""

Daniel slowly turned toward Eleanor.

"You ordered my daughter's reservation canceled?""

Eleanor lifted her chin.

"I did what I thought was best for the hotel.""

"On what authority?""

"As a longtime guest and a personal friend of the management team.""

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

"So being a longtime guest gives you authority to cancel another guest's paid reservation?""

"Daniel, don't twist my words.""

"I'm asking a simple question.""

Eleanor looked toward Richard for support.

He said nothing.

Daniel placed the reservation on the desk.

"Who authorized you to obey her?""

Richard shifted his weight.

"Mr. Carter, Mrs. Whitmore has a close relationship with the general manager. We try to accommodate her requests whenever possible.""

"Even when those requests violate company policy?""

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel turned toward James.

"Has the footage been located?""

"Yes, sir. We're bringing it up now.""

A large monitor behind the reception desk flickered to life.

The first recording showed Emily entering the hotel at 2:17 p.m.

She carried her newborn in one arm and pulled her suitcase with the other.

She approached the reception desk politely.

The footage had no sound, but her movements were clear.

She smiled.

She presented her identification.

She waited.

Then Eleanor appeared from the left side of the lobby.

The footage showed her walking toward Emily with an angry expression.

She pointed at the baby.

She stepped closer.

Then she shoved Emily.

The entire lobby watched the young mother stumble backward.

Someone gasped.

Emily covered her mouth.

Although she had experienced it herself, seeing the moment from another angle made her hands tremble.

Daniel's eyes never left the screen.

The footage continued.

Eleanor pointed at Emily.

Richard approached.

Sophie tried to explain something.

Richard dismissed her.

Then he ordered the cancellation.

The recording showed Emily standing alone, holding her daughter while the other adults surrounded her.

When the footage ended, nobody spoke.

Daniel turned toward Richard.

"Did you see that?""

Richard's voice was barely audible.

"Yes, sir.""

"Did you see her push my daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Did you see my daughter trying to protect her newborn?""

Richard lowered his head.

"Yes, sir.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Then explain why your incident report says the guest became aggressive toward another customer.""

Richard went completely still.

Emily looked up.

"Incident report?""

Daniel held out his hand.

"Show me.""

James quickly opened the internal report on the monitor.

The document stated that Emily had entered the hotel in an agitated state, verbally harassed a VIP guest, refused multiple requests to leave, and created a disturbance.

There was no mention of the shove.

No mention of the baby's distress.

No mention of Eleanor's demand to cancel the reservation.

And Richard had signed it.

Emily stared at the screen.

"He lied.""

Daniel looked at Richard.

"You wrote this?""

Richard began sweating.

"Sir, I was trying to document the situation from the perspective of the employees involved.""

"Did you interview my daughter?""

"No.""

"Did you interview the receptionist?""

Richard hesitated.

"No, sir.""

"Did you review the security footage before writing this?""

"No.""

Daniel nodded.

"So you wrote a report without speaking to the person involved, without questioning the witnesses, and without reviewing the evidence.""

Richard swallowed.

"I understand how it looks.""

"How it looks?""

Daniel stepped closer.

"This is my daughter. She came here carrying a twelve-day-old baby. She paid for a room.

She followed the rules. Your manager's guest shoved her, and you tried to make my daughter look like the criminal.""

Eleanor interrupted.

"Daniel, I think you're forgetting that I am a respected member of this establishment.""

Daniel turned.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I don't care how much money you've spent here.""

Her face reddened.

"Excuse me?""

"You could spend a million dollars a year at this hotel. That still wouldn't give you permission to assault another guest.""

Eleanor looked furious.

"This is outrageous. My daughter will hear about this.""

"Good," Daniel replied.

"I was about to call her anyway.""

He took his phone from his pocket.

"Victoria. It's Daniel Carter. I need you in the lobby immediately.""

A pause.

"Yes, now.""

He ended the call.

Richard looked increasingly desperate.

"Mr. Carter, perhaps we could discuss this in your office.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. This happened in public. We'll address it in public.""

Sophie stepped out from behind the reception desk.

"Mr. Carter?""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Yes?""

The young receptionist looked frightened.

"I'd like to tell you something.""

Richard immediately interrupted.

"Sophie, this is not the time.""

She looked at him.

"Actually, I think it is.""

Daniel gestured for her to continue.

Sophie took a shaky breath.

"Mrs. Whitmore has done this before. Not exactly the same situation, but she has asked us to remove guests she considered unsuitable.

Mr. Hayes always tells us to obey her.""

Richard snapped.

"That's enough!""

Sophie flinched.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Don't interrupt her.""

Sophie continued.

"Three months ago, a family was told to leave because their children were wearing casual clothes in the restaurant. Last month, an elderly couple lost their reservation after Mrs. Whitmore complained about their appearance.""

Emily stared at her.

"Did they actually leave?""

Sophie nodded.

"The elderly woman was crying.""

Daniel slowly looked around the lobby.

He had owned the Grand Windsor for eighteen years.

He had built its reputation on hospitality, dignity, and respect.

And while he had been attending meetings in London and overseeing expansion projects, someone had turned his hotel into a private kingdom.

"Thank you, Sophie," he said.

Then he looked at James.

"Find those previous complaints. I want every report involving Mrs. Whitmore and every management override approved by Richard.""

"Yes, sir.""

Eleanor's face had gone pale.

"Daniel, this is absurd. You're going to destroy people's careers over a misunderstanding?""

Daniel looked at her for several seconds.

"No, Mrs. Whitmore. I'm going to find out how many people have suffered because nobody here believed they were important enough to deserve respect.""

The revolving doors opened.

A woman in a tailored black suit entered, carrying a leather folder.

Victoria Whitmore.

Eleanor immediately rushed toward her.

"Victoria! Thank goodness you're here. Your father is making a terrible scene, and this woman has caused an unbelievable amount of trouble.""

Victoria stopped.

She looked at her mother.

Then at Richard.

Then at Daniel, who was standing beside Emily and holding the newborn.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Carter," she said cautiously.

"I wasn't aware you were visiting today.""

Daniel didn't return the greeting.

"Victoria, before we discuss anything else, I want to ask you one question.""

Victoria swallowed.

"Of course.""

Daniel pointed toward the monitor.

"Why does your mother have the authority to decide which paying guests are allowed to stay in my hotel?""

Victoria's face went completely white.

And then Daniel opened the leather folder James had just brought him.

Inside was a list of forty-seven complaints.

Every single one involved the same name.

*Eleanor Whitmore.*
