Chapter 5 - The Truth Would Not Stay Buried

For three days, Daniel lived with the silence.

Harrison did not answer his calls.

Keisha sent brief updates.

Dad ate breakfast.

Dad's cheek still hurts.

Dad took a short walk.

The final message on the third afternoon was harder to read.

He says he needs more time.

Daniel stopped calling repeatedly after that.

Instead, he sent one message.

"Dad, I know I hurt you. I'm not asking you to forgive me right now. I have the recording saved, and I will not let anyone say you attacked Mia. I'll be here whenever you're ready to speak."

There was no reply.

At home, Mia tried several times to restore their ordinary routine.

She cooked his favorite meal.

She suggested they take a weekend trip.

She left a handwritten note on his pillow.

Daniel appreciated that she wanted to speak, but every conversation returned to the same request.

Could they please stop discussing the video?

Could they tell the family it had all been a misunderstanding?

Could Daniel promise never to show it to anyone else?

Finally, he told her they needed space to decide what came next.

She agreed to stay with her sister temporarily.

Before leaving, she stood beside the front door with a suitcase.

"Do you still love me?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Yes."

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

"But I don't trust you."

Mia lowered her eyes.

"I said I was sorry."

"You've apologized for what happened to us. You still haven't taken responsibility for what you did to Dad."

She looked away.

The door closed softly behind her.

On Thursday afternoon, Harrison finally called.

Daniel almost dropped his phone answering.

"Dad?"

"Hello, son."

His father's voice sounded tired.

Daniel stood beside his office window.

"How are you feeling?"

"My cheek is getting better."

"I'm glad."

There was a pause.

"Keisha told me you saved the recording."

"Yes."

"I don't want that thing sent all over the city."

"It won't be."

"But I don't want anybody thinking I hurt your wife, either."

"They won't hear that from me."

Harrison breathed slowly.

"Some of the family saw you slap me. They heard what Mia accused me of. They deserve to know the truth."

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

"You're right."

Harrison was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "I want to be there when you tell them."

Daniel leaned against the window.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Dad, you don't have to prove anything to anybody."

"I'm not going to prove I'm innocent, Daniel. The camera already did that."

Harrison paused.

"I need to see whether you're willing to tell the truth when it makes you look bad."

Daniel swallowed.

"I am."

***

The family gathered on Saturday afternoon in the same dining room where they had been eating before Mia screamed.

Only the people who had been there that night were invited.

Keisha sat beside Harrison.

Two relatives who had followed Daniel upstairs occupied the far end of the table.

Mia arrived last.

She wore a dark-blue dress and carried a small handbag.

When she saw Harrison, she stopped.

His bruising had faded, but a faint discoloration remained near his cheekbone.

"Hello, Harrison," she said.

He nodded.

She took a seat across from him.

Daniel stood at the head of the table.

His phone lay beside a tablet.

No one touched the refreshments.

Daniel looked toward his father.

"Before anybody sees the recording, I need to say something."

Mia shifted in her chair.

Daniel continued.

"Last Sunday, I heard my wife screaming upstairs. I ran to her. She accused my father of attacking her."

He looked at the relatives who had witnessed the aftermath.

"You heard me yelling. Some of you saw what I did."

His voice tightened.

"I slapped my father."

Harrison sat very still.

Daniel forced himself to continue.

"I didn't ask him to explain. I didn't check the facts. I saw my wife's torn shirt and decided he was guilty."

Mia looked down.

"There's video of the hallway," Daniel said. "It shows what happened before the screaming."

One relative asked quietly, "Is Harrison all right with us watching it?"

Harrison answered for himself.

"Yes."

Daniel turned toward Mia.

"Do you want to tell them what happened before I play it?"

She stared at her hands.

He waited.

Finally, Mia looked up.

"I was angry with Harrison. I wanted Daniel to understand how threatened I felt by his influence in our marriage."

Keisha leaned forward.

"So you accused Daddy of attacking you?"

Mia's eyes filled.

"I wasn't thinking clearly."

Daniel didn't interrupt.

Mia continued.

"I knew Daniel would protect me. I didn't think he would actually hit his father."

Harrison looked directly at her.

"But you wanted him to believe I had hurt you."

Mia said nothing.

Daniel placed his finger over the playback button.

He looked at his father one last time.

May you like

Harrison nodded.

And Daniel pressed play.
