Chapter 3 - What the Camera Actually Saw

Mia leaned toward the phone.
"That's not what you think."
Daniel looked at her.
"Then tell me what I'm looking at."
"Your father had already upset me. I was panicking."
"Why were you pulling on your shirt?"
"I don't remember every little movement!"
Keisha stood up.
"Daniel. Play it."
He hesitated for another second.
Then he pressed the screen.
The recording began several moments before the screaming.
The camera looked down the hallway from above. Its wide view included the console table, the closed bedroom doors, Harrison beside the railing, and Mia several steps behind him.
The white smoke detector appeared at the edge of the image. The camera itself remained outside its own field of view.
The video showed Harrison turning a page of the album.
Mia stood behind him.
She said something.
Harrison looked over his shoulder and appeared to answer briefly before turning back to the photographs.
Mia's expression changed.
She looked toward the staircase.
Then toward the closed door beside her.
She reached for the front of her blouse.
Daniel stopped breathing.
On the screen, Mia gripped the fabric with both hands and pulled hard.
The material split along the buttons.
A small object dropped toward the floor.
She tugged her collar sideways.
Then she raked her fingers through her hair.
Harrison remained several steps away, facing the album.
Mia opened her mouth in a scream.
Only then did Harrison turn.
Daniel watched his father's startled reaction.
He watched Mia stumble backward and point at him.
He watched Harrison raise his hands in confusion.
Then the recording showed Daniel himself arriving at the top of the stairs.
Harrison placed the album on the console.
Daniel approached.
And slapped him.
Daniel froze the video.
Nobody spoke.
The footage was silent, but the visible sequence left no uncertainty about who had torn the blouse or whether Harrison had touched Mia during the recorded incident.
Daniel stared at the image of his own raised hand.
It looked worse from this angle.
His father hadn't even tried to defend himself.
Mia backed away.
"Daniel, please—"
He looked at her.
"You tore your own shirt."
She shook her head.
"That's not the whole story."
"You tore it yourself."
"I was frightened!"
"Of what? He was standing there looking at pictures!"
Mia's eyes filled.
"You don't understand how he talks to me when you're not around."
Harrison leaned forward in the chair.
"Then tell them exactly what I said."
Mia looked at him.
Harrison continued.
"Tell them the words you believe justified what you did."
She stared at the floor.
Daniel looked between them.
"Did he threaten you?"
Mia didn't answer.
"Did he touch you?"
"No," she whispered.
Keisha covered her mouth.
Daniel felt the truth settle into place with a terrible finality.
His wife had lied.
His father had told the truth.
And Daniel had injured the wrong person.
He turned slowly toward Harrison.
"Dad..."
Harrison looked at him.
Daniel had never struggled so much to speak.
"I'm sorry."
His father's expression didn't change.
"I'm sorry," Daniel repeated. "I should've listened. I should never have—"
"Do you remember when you were sixteen?"
Daniel stopped.
Harrison continued quietly.
"You came home after that fight at school. The principal said you started it. You told me another boy had been bothering you for weeks."
Daniel nodded.
"I remember."
"I went to that school and listened to everybody involved before I decided what you needed to answer for."
Daniel lowered his head.
"You did."
"I believed you deserved to be heard."
Harrison looked at the phone.
"And tonight, I asked you for the same thing."
Daniel couldn't look up.
A tear fell onto his tuxedo lapel.
Harrison pressed the ice against his cheek again.
"You didn't even give me thirty seconds."
Keisha turned away, wiping her eyes.
Mia stood silently near the stair railing.
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
She wrapped her arms around herself.
"I thought if you saw your father as the problem, maybe you'd finally stop letting him interfere in our marriage."
Daniel stared at her.
"You wanted me to turn against my own father?"
"I wanted you to choose me for once!"
"I HAVE BEEN CHOOSING YOU!"
His shout echoed down the staircase.
Mia flinched.
Daniel forced himself to lower his voice.
"And apparently, I chose you so blindly that I hit a man who did nothing."
He looked at his father.
"Please tell me what I can do."
Harrison sat with the compress resting against his cheek.
For a long time, he didn't answer.
Then he asked the question Daniel would remember for years.
"If that camera hadn't been there, son, would you ever have believed me?"
Daniel opened his mouth.
No answer came.

Because he didn't know.
And Harrison could see that he didn't know.
