The Night He Made Her Choose / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Door Between Them

Alexa snatched her coat off the back of a dining chair and hurried toward the front door, her phone clutched so tightly in her hand that the edges pressed into her palm.

“Come on, come on,” she whispered, fumbling with the screen.

The modern house in suburban Georgia gleamed beneath recessed ceiling lights, all polished marble, glass walls, and expensive furniture. Outside, midnight had settled over the quiet neighborhood. Beyond the tall windows, the driveway lay empty beneath the porch lights, and the dark shapes of oak trees swayed in the wind.

Alexa barely noticed any of it.

Her phone vibrated again.

She stopped so abruptly that her coat slipped from one shoulder.

*St. Matthew's Medical Center.*

She answered before the second ring.

“Hello?””

“Mrs. Bennett? This is Nurse Collins from the emergency department.

I'm calling about Mr. Carter.””

Alexa pressed the phone harder against her ear.

“Yes. Yes, I'm here. How is he?””

There was a brief pause on the other end.

“His condition has worsened. The doctors are doing everything they can, but your presence may be important. Noah is already here.””

Alexa closed her eyes.

Noah.

Even hearing his name made something inside her tighten. Not because she was afraid of him, not because she had anything to hide, but because she knew how complicated his place in her life had become.

Noah Carter was her oldest friend. His father, James, had treated Alexa like family since she was a teenager. When Alexa's own mother died, James had been the man who sat beside her at the funeral, brought groceries to her apartment, and reminded her that grief did not have to be carried alone.

He had also been the first person to congratulate her when she married Pascal Bennett.

Now James was fighting for his life, and Noah had called her twenty minutes earlier with a voice so broken that she could barely recognize it.

Alexa had promised she would come.

“I understand,” she told the nurse.

“I'm leaving right now.””

She ended the call, grabbed her purse from the console table, and rushed to the door.

Her fingers were already reaching for the handle when she remembered the keys.

“Lord, not tonight.””

She spun around and hurried down the hallway toward the bedroom.

The bedroom door stood open, revealing a neatly made king-size bed, pale linen curtains, and the soft glow of a lamp beside Pascal's nightstand. Alexa crossed the room, nearly stumbling over a pair of shoes she'd left beside the dresser. Her car keys lay where she'd dropped them earlier, next to a small jewelry tray.

She seized them.

Then she heard a voice behind her.

“Where the hell are you going?””

Alexa froze.

Pascal stood in the bedroom doorway.

He wore dark sweatpants and a fitted black T-shirt, his broad shoulders squared against the frame. His expression was hard, but it was his eyes that stopped her. They were fixed on the keys in her hand, then on the coat over her arm, then on her face.

He looked like a man who had just discovered something unforgivable.

“Pascal.”” She swallowed.

“I don't have time for this.””

“Time for what?””

“My friend's father is in the hospital. He's getting worse, and I need to go.””

Pascal stepped into the room.

“Your friend's father.””

“Yes.””

“Which friend, Alexa?””

She stared at him.

“You know which friend.””

“No.”” He gave a short, humorless laugh.

“I want to hear you say his name.””

She could feel the clock ticking somewhere in the house. Every second seemed to press against her chest.

“Noah's father,” she said.

“James. He's in critical condition.””

“And Noah is there?””

“Yes.””

Pascal's jaw shifted.

“Of course he is.””

Alexa shook her head in disbelief.

“What is that supposed to mean?””

“It means that every time that man snaps his fingers, you come running.””

“His father is dying!””

“And somehow, that's supposed to make everything else disappear?””

She stared at him as if he had begun speaking a different language.

“Everything else? Pascal, what are you talking about?””

He moved closer, his anger sharpening with every step.

“You were on the phone with him for twenty minutes. You didn't tell me where you were going. You didn't ask me anything. You just decided you were leaving in the middle of the night.””

“He called me because he's terrified. His father might not make it until morning.””

“And you think I'm supposed to stand here and smile while my wife rushes off to be with another man?””

Alexa's lips parted.

For a moment, she couldn't find a response.

“Another man?”” she repeated.

“Yes, another man.””

“That's Noah. I've known him for most of my life.””

“And I'm your husband.””

The words struck harder than she expected.

Of course he was her husband. The ring on her finger was proof of that. The framed wedding photograph in the hallway showed them smiling beneath a canopy of white flowers, Pascal's arm wrapped around her waist as she leaned into him. She remembered the vows, the music, the promises they had made in front of everyone they loved.

She had meant every word.

But none of those promises had ever included abandoning someone who needed her.

“I'm not choosing Noah over you,” she said carefully.

“I'm going to the hospital because a man who helped raise me is fighting for his life.””

Pascal's nostrils flared.

“You always have an explanation.””

“Because you always find something to accuse me of.””

He laughed again, but there was no humor in it.

“That's convenient.””

“I'm not doing this tonight.””

She stepped around him.

Pascal moved into her path.

Alexa stopped inches from his chest.

“Move.””

He looked down at her.

“Say that again.””

“Please, Pascal. Move. I need to get to the hospital.””

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Alexa could hear her own breathing. She could hear the faint hum of the air conditioner and the wind brushing against the windows. Her phone vibrated in her hand again, and she glanced down.

A message from Noah appeared on the screen.

Alexa, please. The doctors need to talk to the family.

Pascal saw the name.

His expression changed.

Whatever restraint he had been pretending to maintain vanished from his face.

“Unbelievable,” he whispered.

“Don't.””

“Don't what? Don't look at your phone? Don't notice that he keeps calling you?””

“He's scared!””

“And what am I supposed to be, Alexa? Stupid?””

She flinched at the sudden volume of his voice.

Pascal pointed at the phone.

“Look at yourself. You're shaking. You're ready to run out of this house without even looking me in the eye.

Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me this is normal.””

She held his gaze, fighting back tears.

“I'm shaking because someone I love may die tonight.””

The room fell silent.

For one brief moment, something flickered across Pascal's face. He might have understood her. He might have heard the pain beneath her words.

Then his eyes dropped to the phone again.

“And he still comes before me.””

Alexa looked at the man she'd married and felt the first cold edge of something she had never wanted to feel in their marriage.

Not anger.

Not even disappointment.

Fear of what his jealousy might make him do.

“Pascal,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, “I need to leave.””

She turned toward the hallway.

May you like

This time, he followed.

And when she reached the front door, he was right behind her.
