Chapter 9: What Forgiveness Really Costs
A year after everything happened, Marcus saw Vanessa again.
Not in court.
Not during paperwork.
At Evelyn’s birthday dinner.
Marcus almost didn’t invite her.
But Evelyn insisted.
“She was part of my family once.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“And?””
“And sometimes family breaks before it learns how to heal.””
Vanessa arrived carrying flowers.
Nothing expensive.
Nothing impressive.
Just flowers.
She hugged Evelyn.
A real hug.
No performance.
Marcus noticed.
They ate dinner together.
They talked carefully.
Slowly.
Like people walking across ice.
After everyone left, Vanessa stayed behind.
“I owe you an apology.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked surprised.
Not angry.
Just surprised.
“I expected you to say you don't want to hear it.””
“I do want to hear it.””
She breathed deeply.
“I hurt your mother.””
“Yes.””
“I lied to you.””
“Yes.””
“I protected someone who was hurting you.””
“Yes.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was wrong.””
Marcus looked at her.
For the first time, there was no defense.
No excuse.
Just truth.
“I believe you.””
She cried.
“But believing you doesn't mean forgetting.””
“I know.””
“It doesn't mean we go back.””
“I know.””
Marcus nodded.
That was the difference.
