Chapter 7: The Secret Between Mother and Son

Marcus drove to Evelyn’s hotel without calling first.

He didn’t know what he wanted.

An explanation.

An apology.

A reason.

Anything.

When Evelyn opened the door and saw his face, she immediately knew.

“What happened?””

Marcus walked inside.

“Did you contact the insurance company?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Marcus noticed.

“Mom.””

She closed the door.

Then sat down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at her hands.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing you.””

Marcus stared.

“You tried to change my insurance because you were afraid of losing me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I tried to stop someone else from taking advantage of you.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I knew you would defend Vanessa.””

The sentence silenced him.

Because part of him knew it was true.

Evelyn continued.

“I found documents. I found messages. I saw things that frightened me.””

“What things?””

“Vanessa and Darren discussing money.””

Marcus looked away.

“And you thought the answer was secretly changing my policy?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“I contacted the company to ask questions.””

“Questions?””

“Yes.””

“I need the truth.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I never completed anything.””

Marcus stared.

“The detective said you contacted them.””

“I did.””

“But?””

“But I called because I suspected something was wrong.””

Marcus sat down.

“So the request…”

“Was created later.””

“By Vanessa?””

Evelyn nodded.

Marcus was silent.

Suddenly the picture became more complicated.

Nobody was completely innocent.

Nobody was completely guilty.

His mother had hidden things.

His wife had hidden things.

Everyone claimed they were protecting him.

But somehow, protection had become secrecy.

And secrecy had become destruction.

That evening, Vanessa came to the hotel.

Marcus almost refused to see her.

But something inside him knew he needed answers.

She stood outside the door.

No makeup.

No expensive clothes.

No confident smile.

Just Vanessa.

“I need to tell you something.””

Marcus stepped aside.

She entered.

“I know about the investigation.””

“How?””

“Darren called me.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What did he say?””

“That he was scared.””

“And?””

“He said he never meant for anyone to get hurt.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“Your brother never meant for anyone to get hurt?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

She looked at him.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You made choices.””

The distinction hurt her.

Because it was true.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

“Everything.””

She sat down.

“After my father died, Darren struggled. He lost everything.””

“That doesn't justify anything.””

“I know.””

“He tried to steal from me.””

“I know.””

“He used my name.””

“I know.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And you still protected him.””

Vanessa cried silently.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The answer took a long time.

“Because he was the only family I had left.””

Marcus looked away.

“I was your family.””

She whispered,

“I know.””

Two weeks later, Darren Brooks was arrested.

The news spread quickly.

Financial fraud.

Identity misuse.

Forgery.

The investigation uncovered years of schemes.

But one thing surprised Marcus.

Darren had not acted alone.

The police found messages proving Vanessa had eventually tried to stop him.

She had deleted some messages.

Hidden information.

Protected him.

But she had also refused to participate in the final fraud.

It didn’t erase what she did.

But it changed the picture.

Marcus met Vanessa one final time before she moved out.

They sat across from each other in an empty house.

No shouting.

No accusations.

Just two people looking at what remained.

“I loved you,” Vanessa said.

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“I still do.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“But?””

Marcus swallowed.

“But love doesn't fix everything.””

Her eyes filled.

“I wish I had understood that sooner.””

“So do I.””

They sat quietly.

Then Vanessa stood.

At the door, she stopped.

“Marcus?””

“Yes?””

“Your mother was right about one thing.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“Your father knew people better than we thought.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Ask your mother why your father kept a second letter in the trust.””

Then she left.

May you like

And Marcus realized the secrets were not finished.

Not yet.
