Chapter 8: The Truth Vanessa Hid
Aisha had the answer by morning.
The patient at Northgate Recovery Institute was not Vanessa.
It was her younger brother, Andre Cole.
Malcolm remembered Andre.
Twenty-eight.
Quiet.
Funny when he relaxed.
He had served six years in the Army and returned home with an injury Vanessa rarely discussed.
Malcolm had met him only four times.
Then Andre disappeared from family gatherings.
Vanessa always said he was "getting himself together.""
Aisha explained that Northgate specialized in neurological rehabilitation, substance-use recovery, and trauma treatment.
"Patient records are private," she said.
"We won't access medical details without authorization.""
"We don't need them," Malcolm replied.
Simone looked at him sharply.
"You're not angry?""
"I am.""
"But?""
Malcolm stared at the transfer record.
"But this money may have helped her brother.""
Simone crossed her arms.
"Stolen money.""
"Yes.""
"From you.""
"Yes.""
"You are allowed to be furious.""
"I am furious.""
He looked at her.
"But I don't need Andre's diagnosis turned into public evidence just because Vanessa stole from me.""
Simone's shoulders lowered.
"Okay.""
It was one of the things Malcolm had learned painfully over the past year.
Privacy mattered more after people started treating your body like public property.
He would not do to Andre what strangers were doing to him.
Still, one question remained.
Why steal the money?
Why not ask?
Malcolm would have helped.
That hurt more than he expected.
Aisha recommended a formal demand letter and criminal referral.
Malcolm approved both.
Then he made one request.
"Offer mediation first.""
Simone nearly choked on her coffee.
"You're joking.""
"No.""
"She stole one hundred eighty thousand dollars, forged documents, tried to destroy your work, bribed Nia, and accused you publicly of manipulation.""
"I know.""
"And you want mediation?""
"I want the money returned.""
"She deserves consequences.""
Malcolm looked at his sister.
"Consequences and spectacle aren't the same thing.""
Simone sighed.
"You make being angry very inconvenient.""
"I learned from Mom.""
That ended the argument.
By afternoon, Vanessa's attorney accepted the mediation request.
Not because Vanessa suddenly became reasonable.
Because Aisha sent evidence of the altered financial authorization.
The meeting took place the following morning at a private legal office.
No cameras.
No reporters.
Only Malcolm, Aisha, Vanessa, and Vanessa's attorney.
Simone wanted to attend.
Malcolm asked her not to.
Some battles didn't need an audience.
Vanessa entered wearing a dark blue suit.
For the first time since the gala, Malcolm saw her without performance.
No mocking smile.
No tears for a camera.
No boyfriend beside her.
She looked exhausted.
She sat across from him.
Neither spoke.
The mediator began explaining procedure.
Malcolm barely heard him.
He was remembering an older Vanessa.
The woman who once surprised him with tickets to New Orleans for his birthday.
The woman who stayed awake beside his hospital bed the first night after surgery.
The woman who apparently stole from him weeks later.
People were unbearable that way.
Rarely all good.
Rarely all evil.
Complicated enough to hurt you twice.
Finally, Aisha presented the records.
Vanessa's attorney whispered to her.
Vanessa stared at the table.
Malcolm said, "Why didn't you ask me?""
Her head lifted.
Nobody had expected him to speak directly.
"For Andre," Malcolm continued.
Vanessa's face changed.
Fear.
"Leave him out of this.""
"I intend to.""
She looked surprised.
"I haven't released his name.""
Her shoulders dropped slightly.
Malcolm continued.
"You could've asked.""
Vanessa looked down.
"You would've said no.""
"You don't know that.""
"I knew you.""
"No. You knew who I was before the accident.""
Her jaw tightened.
Malcolm leaned forward slightly.
"And apparently you didn't think much of him either.""
Vanessa flinched.
The mediator started to intervene.
Malcolm raised one hand.
"I'm not here to attack you.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Could've fooled me.""
"I'm here because you stole from me.""
"I used some of the money for Andre.""
"Some.""
She looked away.
"The rest?""
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
"My life disappearing.""
Malcolm stared at her.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Everything became about the accident.""
"Imagine that.""
She recoiled.
Malcolm immediately regretted the sharpness, but he didn't apologize.
Vanessa continued.
"I couldn't breathe without somebody asking how you were. My mother called me selfish if I left the hospital. Your family watched everything I did. I lost clients because I kept canceling meetings.""
Malcolm listened.
Not because it excused anything.
Because truth deserved to be complete.
"I resented you," Vanessa whispered.
Malcolm's throat tightened.
"I know.""
"No.""
She looked at him.
"I resented that you were the one who got hurt and somehow I was supposed to become a better person because of it.""
Her tears fell now.
"I hated myself for thinking that.""
"So you took money.""
"I convinced myself it was temporary.""
"You altered paperwork.""
Her face collapsed.
"Yes.""
"You contacted Charles.""
"Yes.""
"You tried to damage the foundation.""
Vanessa's silence answered.
"And Nia?""
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"I didn't tell anyone to bribe her.""
Aisha slid printed messages across the table.
Vanessa stared at them.
"My PR consultant said she could get witnesses.""
"With ten thousand dollars?""
"I didn't know.""
Malcolm studied her.
He couldn't tell whether she was lying.
Maybe it didn't matter anymore.
Vanessa wiped her face.
"You want me destroyed.""
"No.""
She looked up sharply.
Malcolm meant it.
"I wanted you to understand what you did.""
His voice lowered.
"At first I thought the gala was the worst part.""
Vanessa looked ashamed.
"It wasn't.""
He touched the financial records.
"This was worse.""
Her lip trembled.
"Because I trusted you when I couldn't trust my own body.""
That broke something.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Malcolm continued anyway.
"I would've survived you leaving.""
His voice shook now.
"You were allowed to leave.""
Vanessa's eyes filled harder.
"You weren't allowed to use my dependence as an opportunity.""
No one spoke.
Even the mediator looked away.
Finally Vanessa whispered, "I'm sorry.""
Malcolm stared at her.
There had been a time when those words would have mattered more than anything.
Now they were simply words that arrived after evidence.
He nodded once.
"I believe you're sorry now.""
Vanessa almost looked relieved.
Then Malcolm added, "That doesn't erase anything.""
Her relief disappeared.
The settlement terms were negotiated over three hours.
Vanessa would repay all recoverable funds.
Her consulting firm would transfer assets to satisfy part of the amount.
She would issue a written correction regarding the financial authority.
She would withdraw her accusations against Malcolm and the foundation.
The question of criminal charges remained unresolved.
Aisha recommended preserving Malcolm's right to pursue them.
Vanessa signed.
Before leaving, she stopped beside Malcolm.
"Are you going to the police?""
He looked at her.
"I already made a report.""
Her face went pale.
"What happens next isn't entirely mine to decide.""
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered, "I did love you.""
Malcolm felt a deep ache.
"I know.""
She blinked.
That answer seemed to hurt more than disbelief.
Malcolm continued.
"But love without honesty can still destroy somebody.""
Vanessa looked at him one last time.
Then she left.
Outside the office, Nia waited on a bench near the elevators.
Malcolm had told her she didn't need to come.
She came anyway.
"How'd it go?""
"It's finished enough for today.""
Nia nodded.
They rode the elevator in silence.
When the doors opened to the lobby, Malcolm stopped.
"What?""
Nia asked.
Malcolm positioned his feet.
Her eyes widened slightly.
"Here?""
"Here.""
"No dramatic audience?""
"Preferably never again.""
He locked the wheelchair.
Placed his hands on the armrests.
And stood.
His legs trembled.
Nia moved close but didn't touch him.
Malcolm smiled.
"Walk with me.""
Her eyes filled instantly.
"Are you sure?""
"No.""
That made her laugh.
He took one step.
Then another.
Small.
Controlled.
Nia stayed beside him.
At the fourth step, his right knee shook.
She offered her forearm.
He accepted.
At eight steps, he stopped.
Breathing hard.
Sweating.
Smiling.
Nia looked at him.
"That's farther than the ballroom?""
"Much.""
"How much?""
"Three steps.""
She laughed through tears.
Malcolm lowered himself back into the chair.
Nobody applauded.
Nobody recorded.
Nobody called him inspiring.
It was perfect.
Then Nia sat beside him.
"Coffee?""
Malcolm smiled.
"An actual date this time?""
She tilted her head.
"Are you asking?""
"Yes.""
"Then yes.""
For the first time in days, Malcolm felt the future open rather than close.
But across town, Charles Ellison was receiving the first completed results of the independent audit.
May you like
And while it cleared Malcolm of corruption completely, it uncovered something else.
Someone inside the foundation had helped Vanessa obtain confidential documents.
