Chapter 6: The Message He Never Saw
Malcolm did not sleep.
By three in the morning, the city outside his apartment had gone quiet, but his mind kept replaying Darius's final sentence.
There's another message he hasn't seen yet.
Simone sat curled in the armchair across from him, still wearing yesterday's clothes, her laptop open on her knees.
Neither of them had spoken for several minutes.
Finally Malcolm said, "Call him.""
Simone looked up.
"Darius?""
"Yes.""
"At three in the morning?""
"He posted that video at twelve-forty.""
"Fair point.""
She found the number Charles's communications team had obtained earlier and handed Malcolm the phone.
Darius answered on the fourth ring.
"Hello?""
"It's Malcolm.""
Silence.
Then, "I figured you'd call.""
"What message?""
Darius exhaled.
"Not over the phone.""
Malcolm's jaw tightened.
"I'm done with people deciding what I can handle.""
"It's not that.""
"Then what?""
"Because it involves money. Your money.""
Malcolm went still.
Across the room, Simone straightened.
"What money?""
"The insurance settlement.""
Malcolm's fingers tightened around the phone.
After the accident, the trucking company's insurer had eventually agreed to a substantial settlement. Most of it remained in structured accounts to cover long-term medical care, accessibility modifications, therapy, and lost earnings.
Only a small circle knew the details.
Vanessa had been one of them.
Darius continued.
"Meet me tomorrow morning. Public place. I'll bring copies.""
"Bring the tablet.""
"It's hers.""
"Then bring hers.""
Darius gave a humorless laugh.
"Understood.""
They agreed on a quiet restaurant near Charles's office at eight.
When the call ended, Simone stood.
"I hate her.""
Malcolm stared toward the window.
"No, you don't.""
"I absolutely do.""
"You hate what she did.""
"Right now, I am comfortable merging those categories.""
Malcolm almost smiled.
Almost.
Then his expression hardened again.
"What if I missed something?""
Simone frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"After the accident.""
He looked down at his hands.
"I was on medication. I was angry. Depressed. Half the time I couldn't remember what day it was.""
"Malcolm.""
"What if she asked me to sign something?""
Simone's face changed.
Malcolm saw it.
"Exactly.""
"You don't know that.""
"No.""
"But you're thinking it.""
"Yes.""
Simone came closer.
"Then we'll find out.""
At 7:55 a.m., Malcolm entered the restaurant with Simone beside him.
Darius was already there.
He looked different without Vanessa.
Less polished.
Smaller somehow.
Not physically.
Just stripped of performance.
A tablet and a thick envelope rested on the table.
Darius stood when Malcolm approached, then seemed uncertain whether offering a handshake would be welcome.
Malcolm solved the problem by extending his.
Darius took it.
"I'm sorry.""
Malcolm held his gaze.
"I heard you last night.""
"I mean for the gala.""
"I heard that too.""
Darius nodded.
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was acknowledgment.
They sat.
Darius pushed the envelope toward Malcolm.
"Vanessa left her tablet at my apartment two nights ago.""
"Why were you looking through it?""
Darius looked embarrassed.
"Because after the gala, she told me something that didn't make sense.""
"What?""
"She said she should've made sure you never got invited.""
Malcolm frowned.
Darius continued.
"Then she started making calls. PR people. Lawyers.
I asked what she was doing. She said she was protecting herself.""
"So you searched her messages.""
"Yes.""
"That's not exactly noble.""
"No.""
Darius didn't defend himself.
"But I found your name.""
Malcolm opened the envelope.
Printed screenshots.
Dozens.
Messages between Vanessa and a woman named Lauren Pierce.
Malcolm recognized the name.
Vanessa's college roommate.
The first messages were dated two weeks before his accident.
*VANESSA:* I can't keep doing this.
*LAUREN:* Then leave him.
*VANESSA:* I'm going to. After the Ellison fundraiser. His connections are still useful.
Malcolm stopped.
Simone whispered, "Jesus.""
He continued.
Another message.
Three days before the accident.
*VANESSA:* Darius asked me out again.
Malcolm looked up.
Darius's face tightened.
"I didn't know she was still with you.""
Malcolm said nothing.
The next messages were dated after the crash.
*LAUREN:* Are you still leaving?
*VANESSA:* I can't now. Everyone will think I'm a monster.
Then two weeks later:
*VANESSA:* His lawyer says the trucking company could settle big.
*LAUREN:* Does any of that go to you?
*VANESSA:* We're not married. That's the problem.
Malcolm's stomach turned.
Simone put a hand over her mouth.
There were more.
Vanessa complaining about hospital visits.
Complaining about helping Malcolm dress.
Complaining that his mother called too often.
Then, three months after the accident:
*VANESSA:* He signed the financial authorization.
Malcolm froze.
"What?""
Darius nodded toward the next page.
Malcolm read.
*LAUREN:* What authorization?
*VANESSA:* Temporary access so I can pay his bills while he's recovering.
*LAUREN:* That's normal.
*VANESSA:* Depends what you call normal.
A chill moved through Malcolm.
Simone stood.
"Malcolm, we need an attorney.""
He kept reading.
Another screenshot showed a photograph Vanessa had sent Lauren.
A document.
Malcolm recognized his own signature.
It was a limited financial power of attorney.
He remembered it.
Barely.
He had been discharged from inpatient rehabilitation for less than a week.
Pain medication made him nauseous.
Bills were stacking up unopened.
Vanessa had placed papers in front of him.
"It's just so I can keep everything current," she'd said.
He had signed.
But the document in the photograph contained something Malcolm had never seen.
An attached authorization allowing transfers between several accounts.
His pulse hammered.
"Did she take money?""
Darius looked at him.
"I don't know.""
"There wouldn't be messages if nothing happened.""
Darius slid another page forward.
It was dated four days before Vanessa left Malcolm.
*VANESSA:* I moved some.
*LAUREN:* HOW MUCH?
*VANESSA:* Enough to start over.
Malcolm stopped breathing.
Simone grabbed the page.
"What does that mean?""
Darius shook his head.
"That's all I found about the amount.""
Malcolm's voice was almost inaudible.
"My accountant handles those accounts.""
"When was the last time you audited them?"" Simone asked.
He didn't answer.
Because he hadn't.
After the accident, his accountant sent monthly summaries.
Malcolm rarely opened them.
He trusted the system.
And for months, he had trusted Vanessa.
Simone pulled out her phone.
"I'm calling Terrence.""
Terrence Moore had managed Malcolm's finances for eight years.
He answered quickly.
Simone put him on speaker.
"Terrence, did Vanessa Cole ever transfer money from Malcolm's accounts?""
Silence.
Then Terrence said, "Why are you asking?""
Malcolm's blood went cold.
"Terrence.""
Another silence.
"Malcolm, I need to review the files.""
"Answer the question.""
"There were transfers.""
Simone closed her eyes.
"How much?""
"I don't have the exact number in front of me.""
"Estimate.""
Terrence hesitated.
"Approximately one hundred eighty thousand dollars.""
Malcolm stared at the table.
Darius whispered a curse.
Simone's voice shook.
"And you never told him?""
"I believed Vanessa was acting under valid authorization. The documentation had Malcolm's signature.""
Malcolm felt sick.
"When?""
"Several transfers over three months.""
"Where did the money go?""
"An account under Vanessa's control.""
Simone started pacing.
"That's theft.""
Terrence said carefully, "If the authorization was obtained through deception or exceeded its intended purpose, there may be serious legal issues.""
Malcolm barely heard him.
One hundred eighty thousand dollars.
But the number wasn't what hurt.
He remembered those months.
Vanessa bringing him food.
Vanessa sitting beside him at therapy.
Vanessa telling people how exhausted she was from taking care of him.
All while quietly moving money.
His money.
Money intended for the life the accident had forced him to rebuild.
Darius stared down at the table.
"I didn't know.""
Malcolm looked at him.
"I believe you.""
Darius seemed surprised.
"But you knew she was with someone when you started seeing her?""
Darius swallowed.
"Eventually.""
Malcolm waited.
"She told me you were basically over.""
"And you accepted that.""
"Yes.""
"Because it was convenient.""
Darius looked down.
"Yes.""
Malcolm nodded.
"Then own that part. Nothing else.""
Darius met his eyes.
"I will.""
A shadow crossed the table.
Someone had stopped beside them.
Malcolm looked up.
Nia.
She wore jeans and a dark jacket, her backpack over one shoulder.
Her expression changed when she saw the papers.
"I can come back.""
Malcolm had completely forgotten.
Coffee.
They had agreed to meet that morning before her community-college class.
He almost apologized.
Instead, he found himself saying, "Please stay.""
Nia looked at Simone.
Then Darius.
Then Malcolm.
"Are you sure?""
"Yeah.""
Something in his voice made her sit.
Malcolm didn't explain every detail.
Only enough.
When he finished, Nia said nothing for several seconds.
Then she asked the one question nobody else had.
"What do you want to do?""
Simone stopped pacing.
Darius looked up.
Malcolm frowned.
"What?""
"Everybody is going to tell you what you can do.""
Nia gestured toward the documents.
"Police. Lawyers. Lawsuit. Press conference.""
She looked directly at him.
"But what do you want?""
Malcolm stared at the pages.
Yesterday he would have wanted Vanessa exposed.
An hour ago he would have wanted revenge.
Now?
He wanted something cleaner.
"I want the truth documented.""
Nia nodded.
"I want the money returned if she took it.""
Another nod.
"And I want this finished.""
Nia's expression softened.
"Then start there.""
Simone looked at Malcolm.
"Police report?""
He exhaled.
"Yes.""
Darius slid the tablet toward him.
"You'll need this.""
Malcolm nodded.
Then Darius said, "There's one more thing.""
Everyone looked at him.
Darius hesitated.
"Vanessa knows I found the messages.""
Malcolm's face tightened.
"How?""
"She came to my apartment at five this morning.""
"What happened?""
"I told her we were done.""
Malcolm waited.
Darius looked directly at him.
"Before she left, she said if you tried to ruin her, she'd ruin the one thing you care about more than your reputation.""
Simone's expression hardened.
"What does she think that is?""
Darius swallowed.
"Your foundation work.""
Malcolm felt the room become suddenly cold.
Because Vanessa knew exactly where to aim.
May you like
And somewhere beneath his anger, he realized the fight was no longer about what she had done in the past.
It was about what she was desperate enough to do next.
