CHAPTER 5

I didn't wake the children.

I called Detective Ramirez from the hallway.

She answered on the third ring.

I sent her the photograph.

"Don't go outside," she said.

"I wasn't planning to."

"Security?"

"Already alerted."

"Any movement at the gates?"

I checked the monitor.

Two guards were sweeping the perimeter.

"No."

"We'll send a unit."

I stared at the photograph again.

Whoever took it knew exactly which room was mine.

Maybe Vanessa.

Maybe someone helping her.

Neither possibility made me feel better.

By three in the morning, police had searched the road outside the estate.

No one.

The image metadata had been stripped.

The number belonged to a prepaid phone.

Professional enough to frighten me.

Not professional enough to make me back down.

The next morning, I canceled every meeting on my calendar.

Then I canceled the rest of the week.

My assistant nearly dropped the phone.

"You haven't taken four consecutive days off since Noah was born."

"I know."

"Should I tell the board why?"

"Tell them family emergency."

There was a pause.

"Do you need anything?"

"Yes."

"What?"

"Remind me that the company can survive without me."

She laughed softly.

"It absolutely can."

That hurt my ego.

It also saved my life.

I spent the morning with Lily.

Not beside her while emailing.

With her.

We made pancakes.

The first batch burned.

She laughed.

I hadn't realized how much I missed that sound.

Noah threw blueberries onto the floor and shouted, "Again!"

For forty minutes, our kitchen felt almost normal.

Then the doorbell rang.

Security called first.

"Mr. Bennett?"

My last name sounded strange because fear had made me forget ordinary things.

"Yes."

"There's a woman at the gate claiming to be Mrs. Vanessa's mother."

Celeste.

I closed my eyes.

"What does she want?"

"She says she needs to speak with you."

"She can speak through my attorney."

"She's refusing to leave."

I walked to the security monitor.

Celeste Beaumont stood beside a black Mercedes.

Perfect hair.

Pearls.

Dark sunglasses.

She looked like someone arriving for lunch at a country club, not someone whose daughter was under investigation for abusing children.

"Tell her to leave."

Five minutes later, my phone rang.

Celeste.

I shouldn't have answered.

I did.

"How dare you keep Vanessa from her home."

No greeting.

No concern for Lily.

No question about Noah.

"Your daughter locked my children in a doghouse."

"Vanessa made an error in judgment."

"An error?"

"She has been under enormous pressure."

I nearly laughed.

"My two-year-old was trapped in heat."

"And he's fine."

There it was.

The sentence cruel people loved.

He's fine.

As though surviving erased what happened.

"Do not contact me again."

"You should think carefully."

"About what?"

"Your reputation."

I went still.

Celeste continued.

"People know how little time you spend with those children."

"Are you threatening me?"

"I'm advising you."

"Then advise your daughter to cooperate with police."

"Vanessa loves those children."

"No."

My voice sharpened.

"She loves control."

Celeste's tone became colder.

"You were happy to let her control everything when it benefited you."

That landed.

I hated her for saying it.

Mostly because it was true.

I ended the call.

Then I gave the recording to Ramirez.

By afternoon, Maria sat across from me in the study.

She had asked to speak privately.

"I remembered something."

"What?"

"Mrs. Vanessa had another phone."

"The police found two."

"No."

Maria shook her head.

"A third."

My pulse rose.

"Where?"

"I don't know. She kept it in the kitchen sometimes. Small black phone."

"What did she use it for?"

"I heard her talking to someone."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"About what?"

Maria twisted her hands together.

"About dates."

"What dates?"

"Times you were traveling."

I leaned forward.

"What exactly did she say?"

Maria closed her eyes.

"She said, 'He'll be in Chicago Tuesday and Dallas Thursday. That's when we do it.'"

A chill moved through me.

"Do what?"

"I don't know."

"When was this?"

"Maybe two months ago."

"Why didn't you tell the police yesterday?"

"I forgot. There was too much."

I believed her.

Trauma didn't arrive in organized folders.

It came in fragments.

"What else?"

"She said something about the school."

My heart stopped.

"Lily's school?"

"I think so."

I immediately called the principal.

I changed every pickup authorization.

Vanessa was removed.

Celeste was removed.

Everyone except me, my sister Claire, and Maria was removed.

Then I froze.

Claire.

My younger sister.

We hadn't spoken in eight months.

Not because of one argument.

Because of Vanessa.

Claire had accused her of being controlling.

I had defended my wife.

Claire had told me I was disappearing from my own family.

I told her to stay out of my marriage.

She did.

Completely.

My finger hovered over her name.

Then I called.

She answered after four rings.

"Hello?"

"Claire."

Silence.

"Are the kids okay?"

The fact that she already knew startled me.

"How did you hear?"

"It's online."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

She hesitated.

"You haven't seen it?"

I opened my laptop.

A local gossip account had posted a story twenty minutes earlier.

BILLIONAIRE EXECUTIVE'S WIFE ACCUSES HIM OF ABUSE DURING BITTER CUSTODY FIGHT.

My blood ran cold.

There were photographs of Vanessa leaving a lawyer's office.

A source claimed she had endured years of intimidation.

A source claimed she feared for the children's safety.

There was no mention of the doghouse.

No mention of security footage.

No mention of the hidden room.

Vanessa had moved first.

Publicly.

Claire's voice came through the phone.

"Don't respond."

"I know."

"Do you?"

I closed my eyes.

"I need help."

Another silence.

Then her voice softened.

"I'm coming."

"You don't have to."

"You're my brother."

After everything, those four words nearly broke me.

She arrived before dinner.

Lily saw her through the window.

"Aunt Claire!"

She ran.

Claire dropped her bag and fell to her knees.

Lily launched herself into her arms.

Claire held her so tightly both of them started crying.

I stood several feet away.

Ashamed.

Relieved.

Grateful.

Claire looked over Lily's shoulder at me.

Her eyes were full of anger.

But not the kind Vanessa used.

This anger came from love.

"You idiot," she whispered.

"I know."

"No."

She stood.

"You don't know yet."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Claire looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

"Vanessa tried to get me declared unstable last year."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"She told you I was jealous of your marriage."

I remembered.

Claire continued.

"That wasn't why we fought."

She reached into her purse.

"I confronted her because Lily called me crying."

My breath stopped.

"When?"

"Eight months ago."

She handed me an old phone.

"I recorded what Vanessa said when I came here afterward."

I pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

Stay away from my family, Claire.

Then Claire.

She's terrified of you.

Vanessa laughed.

She'll learn.

My knees weakened.

May you like

Then Vanessa said the words that changed the entire case.

And if you tell your brother, I'll make sure he thinks you're crazy.
