Chapter 7: The Recording Her Husband Hid for Fifteen Years

Nobody spoke.

The fluorescent lights above the clinic hallway hummed softly, but Eleanor barely seemed to hear them.

Marcus stared at his mother.

"You're telling me Dad knew someone wanted him dead?""

Eleanor looked down at the black box in her hands.

"I knew your father was frightened during the last few months of his life. He kept saying someone close to him was betraying him. But he never told me exactly what he had discovered.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed I was being watched.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Mom, I was sixteen. You could have told me when I was older.""

"I wanted you to have a normal life.""

"Normal?"" His voice cracked.

"I spent fifteen years believing Dad died because of a heart condition!""

Eleanor reached for his arm.

"Marcus, sweetheart—"

"Don't. Not right now.""

Robert Morgan stepped between them gently.

"Perhaps we should listen to the recording before making assumptions.""

Eleanor nodded.

They returned to her home, where William's study remained untouched.

The black box sat on the desk.

Marcus inserted the USB drive into his laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were six audio files, several scanned contracts, and a document titled:

*IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.*

Marcus clicked the first recording.

A man's voice filled the room.

It was his father.

"December fourteenth. Meeting with Arthur Whitmore. He has denied authorizing the transfers, but the signatures match the documents submitted to the bank.""

Another voice followed.

Arthur's.

"William, you're making a mistake. You're looking at numbers without understanding the business.""

William responded calmly.

"I understand perfectly. Nearly eight million dollars has disappeared.""

"Temporary restructuring.""

"Into a private company owned by your nephew?""

Silence.

Then Arthur laughed.

"You're going to destroy a friendship over paperwork?""

William's voice became harder.

"I'm going to protect my family.""

The recording ended.

Marcus sat motionless.

"That was Arthur.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your father confronted him three days before he died.""

Marcus rubbed his face.

"What happened afterward?""

Robert opened the document.

"There's more.""

He scrolled through several pages.

A transaction record showed that a large amount of money had been transferred from Hayes Holdings into an account associated with Sterling Meridian Group.

The same company appearing in Victoria's documents.

Robert looked up.

"Daniel didn't create this operation. He inherited it from someone.""

Eleanor's face tightened.

"Arthur.""

Marcus leaned toward the screen.

"Then Daniel was working for him.""

"Or being paid by him," Robert replied.

A sudden notification appeared on the laptop.

A new email had arrived from an unknown address.

The subject line read:

*YOU SHOULD STOP DIGGING.*

Marcus opened it.

There was no greeting.

Only one sentence.

*Your father made the same mistake you're making now.*

Attached was a photograph.

It showed Marcus leaving the clinic with Eleanor.

Taken less than an hour earlier.

Eleanor stood immediately.

"How did someone get this?""

Robert checked the photograph's details.

"Someone has been following us.""

Marcus closed the laptop.

"Then we're going to the police.""

Robert nodded.

"I've already contacted the financial crimes division. But we need to be careful. If Arthur has someone inside the company, he may know what evidence we've uncovered.""

Eleanor looked at the black box.

"There's another recording.""

Marcus turned.

"You knew?""

"Your father told me never to open it unless I had no other choice.""

She selected the final audio file.

Its title was simply:

*FOR MY SON.*

Marcus's throat tightened.

He pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then William's voice emerged.

"Marcus, my boy. If you're hearing this, something has happened to me.""

Marcus covered his mouth.

His father's voice sounded older than he remembered, but the warmth was unmistakable.

"I wish I could be there to tell you this in person. I wish I could watch you grow into the man I know you'll become.""

A pause.

"There's something you need to understand about our family. The company is not your inheritance. Your mother is.

The values she taught you are. The people who stand beside you when there's nothing to gain are.""

Marcus's eyes filled.

Then William continued.

"Arthur has been stealing from the company. But I believe he's doing more than that. He has been approaching families through people who can be trusted. People who are allowed inside private homes, who are invited to weddings, who are introduced as friends.""

Eleanor gripped the desk.

William's voice lowered.

"One of those people is Daniel Bennett.""

Marcus looked at Robert.

Robert nodded grimly.

"Keep listening.""

"If Daniel ever comes near our family again, don't trust him. And don't trust anyone who insists that protecting family means keeping secrets.""

The recording crackled.

Then William said something that made Eleanor stagger backward.

"Arthur isn't working alone. The person helping him is someone I once considered my brother.""

The recording stopped.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"Who?""

Eleanor whispered, "There was another person.""

Robert looked toward the document folder.

"Do we have a name?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Your father never told me.""

Marcus reopened the recording's properties.

"Wait.""

He pointed to a small audio timestamp.

"There's a second section.""

He played it.

A door opened in the background.

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then William spoke again.

"Arthur, I know about the woman in the finance department.""

Arthur's voice became sharp.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

"I have her bank records.""

"William, stop.""

"Her name is Margaret.""

Marcus froze.

Margaret Collins.

Victoria's mother.

The woman currently recovering at the clinic.

Eleanor stared at the screen.

"That's impossible.""

Marcus replayed the final few seconds.

William's voice came through clearly.

"Margaret, if you're listening to this, I hope you've found the courage to tell your daughter the truth.""

The recording ended.

Marcus slowly turned toward Robert.

"Why was Victoria's mother involved in my father's investigation fifteen years ago?""

Robert looked toward the door.

"Perhaps we should ask her.""

At the clinic, Margaret was sitting upright when they arrived.

Victoria was beside her, holding a cup of water.

Eleanor entered first.

"Margaret, we need to talk.""

Margaret immediately noticed her expression.

"What happened?""

Marcus placed his laptop on the bedside table.

He played the recording.

The moment William said her name, Margaret closed her eyes.

Victoria stood.

"Mom?""

Margaret began crying.

"Not here.""

Victoria looked horrified.

"Not here? You've been keeping something from me for fifteen years?""

Margaret looked at her daughter.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

Margaret reached into the bedside drawer and removed a small silver key.

"I worked in the finance department at Hayes Holdings. I was twenty-seven. Arthur offered me a promotion, and I accepted.""

Eleanor stared at her.

"You were the woman William mentioned?""

Margaret nodded.

"Arthur asked me to approve certain transfers. He said they were temporary investments. When I discovered the money was going into private accounts, I confronted him.""

Robert leaned forward.

"What did he do?""

"He threatened to ruin me. Then he told me my daughter would be next.""

Victoria's face crumpled.

"Me?""

Margaret nodded.

"I was pregnant with you.""

Silence filled the room.

Marcus looked at the silver key.

"What does that open?""

Margaret closed her fingers around it.

"A safe-deposit box. Your father gave it to me the week before he died.""

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"William gave you something?""

Margaret nodded.

"He told me that if anything happened to him, I had to keep the evidence somewhere Arthur couldn't reach.""

Victoria stared at her mother.

"And you never told anyone?""

"I tried to tell Eleanor. But Arthur's people were watching me.""

Margaret turned to Marcus.

"Your father didn't die because of his heart condition.""

Marcus went pale.

"What are you saying?""

Margaret swallowed.

"Arthur had someone tamper with his medication.""

Before anyone could respond, her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*You have kept the key long enough, Margaret.*

Then another.

*Tomorrow, we finish what William started.*

Margaret began shaking.

May you like

Because the message was signed with a name nobody in the room expected.

*DANIEL BENNETT.*
