Chapter 4: The Bride Before Me

Victoria stopped breathing.

For several seconds, she couldn't even process what her mother had said.

"Mom, what did you just tell me?""

On the other end of the phone, Margaret Collins began crying.

"Victoria, listen to me. You need to leave that hotel immediately.""

"Who was Daniel engaged to?""

"His name wasn't Daniel back then.""

Victoria gripped the edge of the dressing table.

"What?""

"His real name is Daniel Bennett. He was engaged to a woman named Claire Morgan. She came from a wealthy family. Her father owned several commercial properties, and Daniel convinced her he loved her.""

Victoria looked at the photograph Eleanor had left behind.

Daniel stood beside her mother, smiling confidently.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought I could handle it.""

"Handle what?""

Margaret sighed.

"Daniel approached me shortly after your father died. He said he could help protect your inheritance. He was charming, intelligent, and knew exactly what to say.""

Victoria felt sick.

"Mom, you introduced him to me.""

"I know.""

"You told me he was trustworthy!""

"I believed he was.""

Victoria's voice rose.

"How could you believe that?""

"Because I didn't know everything.""

A door slammed somewhere behind Margaret.

Then she whispered, "He told me Claire had died in a car accident. But Eleanor discovered something different.""

Victoria's fingers went numb.

"What did she discover?""

"Claire's father accused Daniel of forging documents to gain control of his daughter's inheritance. Before the investigation was completed, Claire disappeared.""

Victoria stared at the floor.

"Disappeared?""

"Nobody could find her. Daniel changed his name, moved to another state, and started over.""

Victoria covered her mouth.

"Why would he come after Marcus?""

"Because Hayes Holdings is worth considerably more than the Bennett family's estate ever was.""

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Victoria asked the question she had been avoiding.

"Mom, did you know Daniel wanted me to marry Marcus?""

Margaret didn't answer.

"Mom!""

"Yes.""

Victoria staggered backward.

"You knew?""

"I suspected it.""

"And you let me go through with the wedding?""

"I tried to stop you! You wouldn't listen. You told me I was jealous because you were marrying into a wealthy family.""

Victoria remembered that argument.

She remembered calling her mother bitter.

She remembered telling her that she had spent her entire life making bad financial decisions and had no right to criticize hers.

Now those words felt like knives.

"Where is Daniel?""

"I don't know.""

"He's supposed to be in the hotel.""

"Victoria, leave. Right now.""

The call ended.

Victoria immediately dialed Daniel.

He answered on the first ring.

"Finally. I've been trying to reach you.""

She stared at the door.

"Did you lie to me?""

Daniel sighed.

"Not now, Victoria.""

"Were you engaged to Claire Morgan?""

Silence.

Then he said, "Who told you that?""

"Eleanor.""

"Of course she did.""

"Did you change your name?""

"Victoria, calm down.""

"Did you use me to get to Marcus?""

Daniel's voice became colder.

"You're getting emotional. That's not helping anyone.""

She almost laughed.

"You're telling me to calm down after I found out you were engaged to another woman before me?""

"Listen carefully. I have spent months arranging this. You have everything you need. All you have to do is get Marcus to sign the papers.""

"He walked out.""

"Then bring him back.""

"He ended the marriage.""

"Then make him reconsider.""

Victoria looked at the wedding dress hanging beside the window.

"Daniel, he knows about the trust.""

A pause.

"How much does he know?""

"I don't know.""

"Did Eleanor show him the original file?""

"I don't know!""

Daniel swore.

"Then we have a problem.""

Victoria lowered her voice.

"What happened to Claire?""

Another silence.

This time, it lasted longer.

Finally, Daniel said, "Claire made some unfortunate decisions.""

Victoria's stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

"It means she got involved in things she didn't understand.""

"Did you hurt her?""

"Don't be stupid.""

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Daniel, I'm asking you a question.""

"And I'm telling you to stop asking questions. You signed nothing, Marcus signed nothing, and now we're both exposed. Find the original file.""

The call disconnected.

Victoria stood frozen.

Then she heard footsteps outside.

A hotel employee knocked.

"Miss Collins? There's a gentleman downstairs asking for you.""

"Who?""

"He says his name is Robert Morgan.""

Victoria's blood ran cold.

"Robert Morgan?""

"Yes, ma'am. He says he's Claire's father.""

Twenty minutes later, Victoria sat in a quiet private lounge.

A gray-haired man stood near the fireplace.

He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase.

His expression was controlled, but his eyes were exhausted.

"Victoria Collins?""

She nodded.

"Mr. Morgan?""

He offered his hand.

She shook it reluctantly.

"I apologize for arriving unannounced," he said.

"But Eleanor told me you might finally be ready to hear the truth.""

Victoria stared at him.

"Why would Eleanor call you?""

"Because she's been helping me find my daughter.""

He placed the briefcase on the table.

Then he opened it.

Inside were photographs, bank statements, and copies of legal documents.

Victoria recognized Daniel immediately.

One photograph showed him embracing a younger woman in front of a courthouse.

"That's Claire," Robert said.

Victoria stared.

"She looks happy.""

"She was.""

Robert pulled out another photograph.

This one showed Daniel entering a bank with a woman who looked remarkably like Victoria.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

It was Margaret.

Victoria frowned.

"What is my mother doing with him?""

Robert looked at her carefully.

"Your mother wasn't his first target. She was the person who helped us understand how he operated.""

Victoria's eyes widened.

"She helped you?""

"She contacted Eleanor after discovering the forged documents. Together, they found evidence that Daniel had been using wealthy women to access family trusts.""

Robert slid another photograph across the table.

It showed Claire standing outside a small apartment building.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*Last confirmed sighting.*

Victoria's hands trembled.

"Is she alive?""

Robert looked down.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Then he opened a final envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a wedding ring.

A woman's wedding ring.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

Victoria recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was Daniel's.

*The next bride will be easier. Her mother already trusts me.*

Victoria slowly raised her eyes.

"Mr. Morgan...""

Robert leaned forward.

"Victoria, I need you to tell me something.""

"What?""

He pointed to the photograph.

"Did Daniel give you a wedding ring?""

Victoria nodded.

Robert's expression darkened.

"Then we may have found the reason he wanted you married so quickly.""

He removed a document from the envelope.

At the top was the name of a company Victoria had never heard of.

May you like

At the bottom was her own signature.

Except she had never signed it.
