Chapter 9: The Truth That Destroyed Three Families
Sarah felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath her.
Dr. Arnold.
The man who had delivered the news of Ben's collapse.
The man who had stood beside her while she cried.
The man who had held her mother's secrets.
Her biological father?
“No,” Sarah whispered.
Margaret stepped toward her.
“Sarah, please.””
“No. I don't want another explanation. I want the truth.””
Dr. Arnold finally spoke.
“Your mother and I were together before she married Thomas.””
Sarah looked at him.
“How long?””
“Several years.””
“And Rachel?””
“She was my daughter too.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Why didn't you come looking for us?””
Arnold's face tightened.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Daniel.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Don't pretend you were afraid of me. You were afraid of losing your career.””
Arnold looked at him.
“You threatened to destroy my medical license.””
“And you agreed to help me.””
“I was twenty-eight years old!””
“And you were willing to sell your children for a comfortable life.””
Sarah felt sick.
She turned toward Margaret.
“Is this true?””
Margaret nodded.
“I met Arnold when I was working as a nurse. He was a young doctor. We fell in love.””
“Then why did you marry Thomas?””
Margaret looked toward Thomas.
“Because Arnold believed his career mattered more than his family.””
Arnold lowered his head.
“Margaret…”
“Don't,” she said.
“You left me alone when Daniel started threatening us. Thomas was the only person who offered to protect me.””
Thomas looked away.
Sarah stared at her mother.
“Then why did you tell me Thomas was my father?””
“Because he raised you. He loved you. And for a long time, he was the only father you needed.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“And me?””
Margaret's face crumpled.
“You were adopted by a family I believed would keep you safe.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I spent thirty-two years wondering why I never felt like I belonged anywhere.””
Margaret reached for her.
Rachel stepped back.
“You don't get to fix thirty-two years with an apology.””
Margaret lowered her hands.
“I know.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Sarah remembered something.
“Ben.””
She turned toward Thomas.
“You said he was downstairs.””
Thomas nodded.
“Take me to him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Not until we finish discussing the trust.””
Sarah turned sharply.
“You can discuss whatever you want with the police.””
Daniel laughed.
“You really think the police will care about a family dispute involving money?””
Rachel held up her recording device.
“They'll care about the conversation where you discussed killing Ben.””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Sarah pointed toward the security officer.
“Call the police. And get an ambulance team to the old cardiac wing.””
The officer hesitated.
Thomas suddenly raised both hands.
“Wait. I'll take you to Ben.””
Margaret looked suspicious.
“Why should we believe you?””
“Because if Ben dies, the original recordings disappear with him.””
Sarah's eyes narrowed.
“What recordings?””
Thomas looked at Dr. Arnold.
“The ones your mother made.””
Margaret went pale.
Thomas continued.
“She recorded the meeting where Daniel admitted he had arranged the original transfer scheme.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Thomas, shut your mouth.””
But Thomas was already speaking.
“She kept the recording in Ben's phone. That's why they needed him alive long enough to retrieve it.””
Sarah's heart pounded.
“Then why did you try to move him?””
“Because Arnold said Ben had copied the file.””
Sarah looked at the doctor.
“Where is the copy?””
Arnold said nothing.
Thomas pointed toward the basement.
“Come with me.””
The old cardiac wing had been closed for renovation two years earlier.
Its corridors were dark, with plastic sheets covering unused equipment and dust gathering along the walls.
Thomas led them toward a metal door.
A security keypad was mounted beside it.
He entered a code.
The door unlocked.
Inside was a small private treatment room.
Ben lay on a narrow bed.
His hands were restrained.
An oxygen tube rested beneath his nose.
Sarah rushed forward.
“Ben!””
His eyes opened.
“Sarah?””
She grabbed his face gently.
“I'm here.””
He tried to sit up.
“Get out.””
“I'm not leaving you.””
“Sarah, they're dangerous.””
“I know.””
She kissed his forehead.
Then she noticed the bruising on his wrist.
“What did they do to you?””
Ben looked toward Dr. Arnold.
“He wanted my phone.””
Sarah turned.
“Did he get it?””
Ben shook his head.
“No. But he got the backup.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Where?””
Ben struggled to speak.
“In the medication cabinet. Behind the emergency supply box.””
Thomas moved toward the cabinet.
Margaret immediately raised her gun.
“Don't touch it.””
Thomas froze.
Sarah approached the cabinet herself.
Inside were rows of sealed medical supplies.
She found the emergency supply box and pulled it forward.
Behind it was a small black USB drive.
She held it up.
“Is this it?””
Ben nodded.
“That's the original recording.””
Dr. Arnold suddenly lunged toward her.
A security officer tackled him to the floor.
The USB drive slipped from Sarah's fingers and landed beneath the bed.
Daniel moved toward it.
Rachel stepped in front of him.
“Don't.””
He grabbed her arm.
“Move!””
Rachel screamed.
Sarah turned.
Thomas rushed forward and pulled Daniel away.
The two men crashed into a medical cart.
Metal instruments scattered across the floor.
A security officer shouted for everyone to stop.
Then Ben began coughing violently.
Sarah rushed back to his side.
“Ben!””
His monitor started beeping faster.
“Get a doctor!”” she screamed.
Dr. Arnold, still on the floor, looked toward the monitor.
“His heart rhythm is deteriorating.””
Sarah stared at him.
“Then help him!””
He hesitated.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Margaret stepped forward.
“Arnold, if you ever loved your daughters, save that man's life.””
The doctor looked at Sarah.
Something changed in his expression.
He pushed himself upright and immediately began issuing instructions.
“Get the crash cart! Prepare the cardiac medication. Now!””
The medical team arrived within seconds.
Sarah was forced away from the bed.
She stood in the corridor, holding Rachel's hand.
Thomas was sitting against the wall, his shirt torn.
Daniel had been restrained by security.
Dr. Arnold was inside the room, working desperately to stabilize Ben.
Sarah looked at her mother.
“Is he going to survive?””
Margaret held her tightly.
“I don't know, sweetheart.””
Sarah began crying.
Then Rachel suddenly noticed something on the floor.
A small envelope had fallen from Thomas's coat.
She picked it up.
“Sarah?””
“What?””
Rachel opened it.
Inside was a document with the hospital's official seal.
It was an original death certificate.
Sarah stared.
The name at the top wasn't Margaret Collins.
It was Daniel Reed.
The date of death was eleven months earlier.
The same date Margaret had supposedly died.
Rachel looked at Thomas.
“Why do you have Daniel's death certificate?””
Thomas slowly stood.
“Because the man standing in that corridor isn't Daniel Reed.””
Sarah felt her stomach drop.
“What?””
Thomas looked toward the restrained man.
“That man is an impostor.””
The man who had been calling himself Daniel began laughing.
Then he looked directly at Sarah.
“Your father finally told you.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“I'm the man who paid for your mother's disappearance.””
He leaned closer.
“And the real Daniel Reed is the man lying in that hospital room.””
Sarah turned.
Through the glass, she could see Dr. Arnold working over Ben.
But there was another figure standing behind him.
An elderly man in a hospital gown.
He was watching Sarah.
And when their eyes met, he raised one trembling hand.
Margaret gasped.
“Daniel?””
The old man nodded.
Then he mouthed two words.
*Find the girls.*
Sarah looked at Rachel.
There were supposed to be two daughters.
But the old man's words suggested something far worse.
A nurse rushed out of the treatment room.
“Mrs. Mitchell!””
Sarah turned.
“Is my husband okay?””
The nurse looked shaken.
“His heart rhythm is stable for the moment. But there's something we found in his medical records.””
“What?””
The nurse handed her a printed report.
Sarah looked at the medication list.
One drug had been administered repeatedly during Ben's treatment.
It was contraindicated for his previously diagnosed condition.
Someone had prescribed it knowing what it could do.
The prescribing physician's name appeared at the bottom.
*Dr. Edward Arnold.*
Sarah looked toward the treatment room.
The doctor had disappeared.
And the security officer was shouting into his radio.
“Lock down the building! The doctor is missing!””
Sarah's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*UNKNOWN:* Congratulations, Sarah. You found your mother, your sister, and the truth about your husband.
A second message followed.
*UNKNOWN:* But there's one final secret.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed Ben and Sarah standing outside their apartment four years earlier.
Behind them stood a little girl holding a red balloon.
Sarah zoomed in.
She recognized the child.
It was Emily.
The six-year-old daughter Sarah and Ben had been told was stillborn.
The message beneath the photograph contained only one sentence.
*UNKNOWN:* Your daughter is alive, too.
Sarah dropped the phone.
Margaret caught her before she fell.
“Mom,” Sarah whispered.
“Where is my baby?””
May you like
Margaret looked at the photograph.
And for the first time since returning from the dead, she had absolutely no answer.
