Chapter 8: The Father Who Owned Nothing

Daniel Reed looked nothing like the monster Sarah had imagined.

He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, a carefully tailored navy suit, and an expensive watch.

He looked like someone who belonged in a boardroom, not a hospital corridor.

But his eyes were cold.

“Margaret,” he said again.

She raised the gun.

“Don't move.””

Daniel glanced at the weapon.

“You always were dramatic.””

“You have no right to be here.””

“Actually, I have every right.””

He lifted the file.

“Your daughter is standing in front of me. And so is the money you stole.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“I'm not your daughter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You have my eyes.””

“I have my own eyes.””

He smiled faintly.

“Your mother told you about me?””

“She told me enough.””

“Did she tell you that I paid for your education? Your childhood home? The medical treatment you received when you were twelve?””

Sarah frowned.

“What treatment?””

Daniel opened the file.

“Your heart.””

Sarah looked at her mother.

“What is he talking about?””

Margaret's face changed.

“Daniel, don't.””

He continued.

“You were born with a congenital heart condition. Your mother knew you needed surgery. I offered to pay for everything.””

Sarah shook her head.

“I had surgery when I was twelve. My parents told me it was covered by insurance.””

“Insurance?”” Daniel laughed.

“Your mother couldn't afford the paperwork.””

Margaret raised the gun higher.

“Enough!””

Daniel held up one hand.

“You see, Sarah, I've spent years trying to get back what belongs to me. Your mother took the money, hid it under a charitable trust, and then pretended to die.””

Sarah looked between them.

“Why would she steal from you?””

“Because she wanted to punish me.””

Margaret's voice broke.

“Because you threatened our children.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“I never threatened them.””

“You told me that if I left, you'd take both girls.””

“I wanted my family.””

“You wanted control.””

Sarah felt her head spinning.

“Both girls?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes. You and Rachel.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Don't call us your family.””

Daniel gave her a cold look.

“You've inherited your mother's stubbornness.””

Rachel pulled out her phone.

“Actually, I've inherited something much more useful.””

She held up a small recording device.

Daniel's expression changed.

“What is that?””

“Your conversation.””

He laughed.

“You think anyone will believe you?””

Rachel pressed a button.

A recorded voice filled the corridor.

Daniel's voice.

Clear and unmistakable.

Once Sarah signs the authorization, the entire trust becomes accessible. Arnold can certify the transfer, and Thomas can take care of the remaining paperwork.

Then another voice.

Dr. Arnold.

What about Ben?

Daniel answered:

He won't be a problem after tonight.

The recording stopped.

Silence.

Sarah looked at Dr. Arnold.

“Is that why you were trying to discharge my husband?””

The doctor lowered his eyes.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough of this.””

Margaret moved between him and Sarah.

“You're not touching her.””

Thomas looked at his wife.

“After everything I did for you, this is how you repay me?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“You buried me.””

“I protected you.””

“You forged my death certificate!””

Thomas's voice rose.

“Because Daniel was looking for you!””

“And you used my death to steal from our daughters!””

Thomas looked toward Sarah.

“Sweetheart, listen. I didn't steal anything. I was protecting your inheritance.””

“You forged documents with Mom's signature.””

“I had no choice.””

“You used Ben's identity.””

“He agreed to help me.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No, he didn't.””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“You don't know what that man has done.””

“I know he almost died.””

For the first time, Thomas looked genuinely uncomfortable.

Margaret noticed.

“You know what happened to Ben.””

Thomas said nothing.

Sarah moved closer.

“Did you poison my husband?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I didn't touch him.””

“Did you order someone else to?””

His silence was enough.

Sarah's knees nearly buckled.

Rachel caught her arm.

Margaret stepped toward Thomas.

“You monster.””

Thomas suddenly reached into his coat.

Margaret raised the gun.

“Don't!””

He froze.

But Dr. Arnold used the distraction to rush toward the elevator.

Rachel shouted.

“Stop him!””

One of the security officers finally moved.

He grabbed Arnold's arm and slammed him against the wall.

The clipboard fell.

Documents scattered across the floor.

Sarah noticed a familiar name on the top page.

*PATIENT TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION: BENJAMIN MITCHELL.*

Destination: Private Medical Facility.

Reason: Unspecified cardiac complication.

And beneath the printed details was another signature.

Thomas Collins.

Sarah picked up the paper.

“Where is Ben?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Your husband is alive.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Tell me!””

Daniel suddenly laughed.

“Thomas, you really should stop pretending.””

Thomas turned.

“Shut up.””

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“Your husband is downstairs. But he's not the reason they brought you here.””

Sarah stared.

“Then why?””

Daniel opened the hospital file.

“Because Ben discovered the original beneficiary agreement.””

He removed a document and held it up.

“The seven million dollars was never supposed to belong to you alone.””

Sarah looked at the page.

Two names were printed beneath the heading.

*SARAH MARGARET COLLINS.*

*RACHEL ELEANOR COLLINS.*

Both were listed as equal beneficiaries.

But there was another clause.

A condition.

The trust could only be accessed when both sisters signed together.

Sarah looked at Rachel.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Rachel's eyes filled.

“I didn't know.””

Daniel smiled.

“And now you understand why everyone has been chasing you.””

Margaret lowered the gun slightly.

“Daniel, it's over.””

He shook his head.

“Not yet.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a second document.

“There's one more thing.””

Sarah stared at it.

It was a DNA report.

Her name appeared at the top.

Rachel's appeared beneath it.

And a third name was listed as the biological father of both women.

Not Daniel Reed.

Not Thomas Collins.

Someone else.

Sarah looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Margaret began shaking her head.

“That's not possible.””

Daniel's smile widened.

“Your mother has spent thirty-two years lying about the identity of your real father.””

Sarah looked down at the report.

The name was clearly printed.

*DR. ARNOLD.*

The hospital doctor.

The man who had treated her husband.

The man who had been helping her father.

And the man who had just tried to disappear with Ben.

Sarah slowly raised her eyes.

Dr. Arnold was no longer struggling against security.

He was staring at Margaret.

Then he whispered:

“Tell them what happened the night the twins were born.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

May you like

And when she opened them again, she looked directly at Sarah.

“Your father isn't the man you think he is.””
