Chapter 3: The House He Bought Behind My Back
For several seconds, Claire could hear nothing except the steady hum of the restaurant's air conditioning.
She knew the address on Daniel’s phone.
She had driven past that house twice while visiting a client in Brentwood. It was a large property tucked behind mature oak trees, with a stone driveway, black-framed windows, and a backyard that looked like something from a luxury real estate magazine.
Six bedrooms.
A swimming pool.
A detached guesthouse.
The asking price had been listed at just under $900,000.
Claire had shown Daniel the property online months earlier as a joke.
“Imagínate vivir en una casa así”, she had said one Sunday morning.
Daniel had laughed.
“Ni vendiendo todos mis órganos podría pagarla.””
Now the address sat on his phone beside a message confirming a completed payment.
Claire looked at him.
“Daniel, ¿qué casa es esa?””
He locked the screen.
“Ninguna. Es un error.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“¿Un error de quién?””
“Papá, por favor. No hagas un espectáculo.””
Robert slapped the promissory note against the table.
Several relatives shifted uncomfortably. Vanessa stood up, then sat down again when nobody followed her lead.
Daniel looked around the room, searching for an ally.
Mark raised both hands.
“Yo no sé nada de esa casa.””
Vanessa stared at her brother.
“Daniel, ¿compraste una casa?””
“¡Cállate, Vanessa!””
The sharpness of his voice silenced her.
Claire felt something inside her settle into place. She had spent years searching for reasonable explanations for Daniel’s behavior. She had blamed stress, pride, insecurity, and the pressure of running a struggling business.
But a man who could hide a house purchase while borrowing money from his wife and father was not simply overwhelmed.
He was choosing what to conceal.
Daniel turned toward her.
She stared at him.
Claire almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny, but because he had managed to turn an accusation into an offense against himself.
“¿Confianza?””, she repeated.
Robert interrupted.
“Daniel, si tienes una explicación, dila.””
Daniel dragged a hand over his face.
Robert pushed his chair away from the table.
That last sentence landed harder than anything else.
Daniel stared at his father.
Claire slowly turned toward Robert.
“¿Cómo sabes lo de los seis años?””
Robert looked at her.
Daniel stood abruptly.
“¡Ya basta!””
His chair scraped across the floor.
“Esta conversación se terminó. Claire, nos vamos.””
He reached for her wrist.
She pulled away.
For the first time that evening, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
He leaned close enough that only she could hear him.
Claire held his gaze.
“¿Qué construimos, Daniel? ¿Nuestro matrimonio o tus secretos?””
He recoiled as though she had struck him.
Across the table, Robert opened his folder again.
“Hay otra cosa que debemos revisar”, he said.
Daniel's head snapped around.
“¿Qué otra cosa?””
Robert pulled out a second sheet.
“This is the bank transfer confirmation from the day I gave you the money. I sent it to the business account number you provided.””
He turned the page so Claire could see it.
The recipient account belonged to a company called DM Property Holdings LLC.
Claire frowned.
“¿Esa es tu empresa?””
“No”, Robert replied.
Daniel grabbed the paper.
“¡Es una cuenta comercial! Todo está conectado.””
Claire had spent enough years reviewing corporate statements to recognize the difference between an explanation and a distraction.
“¿A nombre de quién está esa compañía?””, she asked.
Daniel did not answer.
Robert removed his glasses.
“Lo investigué esta tarde. La empresa fue registrada hace ocho meses.””
“¿Por quién?””, Claire asked.
Robert looked directly at his son.
“Por Daniel.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Mark muttered something under his breath.
Claire felt her pulse beating in her throat.
Robert nodded.
“Eso parece.””
Daniel shoved the papers into the folder.
“¡No saben nada! La compañía tiene fines legítimos. Estoy diversificando mis inversiones.””
“¿Y por qué nos mentiste?””, Claire asked.
He turned toward her, eyes blazing.
Claire looked at the man she had married.
He had taken her financial discipline, the very quality that helped her build a stable life, and turned it into a weapon against her.
“Te presté dinero porque te amaba”, she said.
“Me debes veintisiete mil quinientos dólares.””
“¡Te los voy a pagar!””
“Y le debes sesenta mil a tu padre.””
“¡También se los pagaré!””
Robert's expression hardened.
Daniel fell silent.
That silence told Claire more than all his shouting.
Robert gathered his papers.
Robert stood and addressed the rest of the family.
“La cena terminó. Cada quien pagará su cuenta.””
Vanessa looked outraged.
Robert turned toward her.
Nobody moved.
For the first time in years, the family that had treated Claire as an endless source of money was forced to face its own expenses.
She quietly paid Robert's birthday dinner, thanked the waiter, and walked toward the exit.
Daniel followed her into the parking lot.
“Claire, espera.””
She kept walking.
“Tenemos que hablar.””
“Ya hemos hablado demasiado.””
He caught up beside her car.
Claire unlocked her car but did not open the door.
“¡No tenía suficiente efectivo disponible!””
Daniel looked away.
For a moment, the parking lot was quiet except for the distant sound of traffic.
Then he spoke.
“Porque necesitaba mantener las cosas funcionando.””
“¿Qué cosas?””
He didn't answer.
Claire's eyes narrowed.
“¿Quién vive en esa casa, Daniel?””
His head turned sharply toward her.
“Nadie.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
She opened the car door.
“Ya es demasiado grande.””
“¿Adónde vas?””
“A casa.””
“Nuestra casa.””
Claire paused.
“Por ahora.””
She drove away before he could respond.
At home, she placed her purse on the kitchen counter and opened her laptop. She reviewed her bank transfers, the loan records, and the financial documents Daniel had occasionally asked her to organize.
Most of the transactions looked ordinary until she compared the dates.
Two days after receiving money from her, Daniel had made payments to an account connected to DM Property Holdings.
The same company Robert had identified.
Claire downloaded the records and printed the relevant pages.
Then she checked the messages Daniel had sent her over the previous year.
The excuses were familiar.
The dates were not.
Each time she had rescued him, money had moved into an account associated with the property company.
She sat back in her chair.
Daniel had not merely borrowed money from her.
He might have used her money to help purchase a house while telling her he could barely cover his bills.
Her phone rang.
Robert's name appeared on the screen.
“Claire, necesito que escuches algo”, he said without greeting her.
“¿Qué pasó?””
“Encontré el registro completo de la compañía. Daniel no aparece como el único propietario.””
Claire's fingers tightened around the phone.
“¿Quién más aparece?””
Robert hesitated.
“Una mujer llamada Rebecca Lawson.””
The name meant nothing to Claire.
Claire opened her laptop again.
“I don't know, Claire. But there is something else.””
His voice dropped.
“The property records show that Rebecca signed a document stating the house would be her primary residence.””
Claire stopped breathing for a moment.
“¿Su residencia principal?””
“Sí.””
Claire stared at the spreadsheet on her screen.
The payments.
The lies.
The money that had disappeared into the property company.
A woman whose name she had never heard of.
Then Robert added the sentence that changed everything.
Claire's eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall.
“Envíame una copia de todo.””
“Lo haré. Y Claire…”
After the call ended, Claire spent the next two hours comparing every transfer she could access with the dates in the property records.
At 11:47 p.m., she found something she had overlooked.
A payment for $8,750.
The memo line read: Depósito — propiedad.
She checked the date.
It was the same day Daniel had told her that his business account was overdrawn and begged her to cover his employees' salaries.
Claire stared at the screen, unable to move.
Then her phone vibrated.
A text message appeared from Daniel.
Another message arrived immediately.
Y si de verdad quieres salvar nuestro matrimonio, no busques a Rebecca.
Claire read the name again.
Rebecca.
For six years, she had paid for the dinners, the celebrations, the gifts, and the emergencies. She had convinced herself that every sacrifice was building a future with the man she loved.
Now she had evidence that some of her sacrifices might have paid for a house where another woman planned to live.
She opened a browser and searched the name from the company records.
Several results appeared.
One showed a professional profile. Another listed a real estate transaction.
But the third result made Claire's hands go cold.
It was an archived wedding announcement.
The groom's name was Daniel Mitchell.
The bride's name was Rebecca Lawson.
The announcement was dated four years earlier.
Claire leaned closer to the screen.
The photograph showed Daniel in a dark suit, standing beside a smiling woman in a white dress.
He was wearing the same silver watch she had bought him for their second wedding anniversary.
Claire's phone began ringing.
Daniel.
She let it ring once.
Twice.
Then she answered.
“¿Quién es Rebecca Lawson?””, she asked.
There was a long silence on the other end.
Finally, Daniel whispered, “Claire, puedo explicarlo.””
She looked at the wedding announcement again.
His voice cracked.
May you like
And before Claire could ask another question, Daniel said the words that made her realize the house was only one part of the betrayal.
“Rebecca y yo nunca nos divorciamos legalmente.””
