Chapter 2: The Sixty-Thousand-Dollar Secret
Robert Mitchell had always believed that a man’s character revealed itself when money was involved.
Unfortunately, he had spent seventy years learning that even a father could be fooled by his own son.
As the waiter collected the dinner orders, Robert watched Daniel laughing with his cousins. His son looked relaxed, confident, almost proud.
Robert knew that smile.
It was the smile Daniel wore whenever he wanted someone to believe everything was under control.
“¿Qué te pasa, papá?””, Daniel asked, noticing his silence.
Robert adjusted his glasses.
“Nada, hijo. Solamente estoy disfrutando la noche.””
“Pues sonríe. Cumples setenta años una sola vez.””
Robert looked at Claire.
She was listening to Vanessa describe her latest shopping trip, nodding politely while barely touching her water.
There was something different about her tonight.
Robert couldn't identify it at first. Then he realized she wasn't watching Daniel for permission to speak.
She was simply sitting there, comfortable in her own silence.
For years, he had watched his daughter-in-law rescue his son from financial trouble. He had assumed Daniel eventually reimbursed her. Whenever Claire paid for a family celebration, Daniel told everyone it was her idea.
“She loves making people happy,” he would say.
Robert had believed him.
Until six months ago.
That afternoon, Daniel had appeared at Robert’s house carrying a folder and looking unusually nervous.
“Necesito hablar contigo de algo importante, papá.””
Robert had invited him into his study.
“¿Qué pasó?””
“Mi negocio está pasando por una mala racha. Tengo unos contratos pendientes, pero necesito capital para cubrir los gastos hasta que entren los pagos.””
Robert listened carefully.
“How much do you need?””
“Sesenta mil dólares.””
Robert nearly dropped his reading glasses.
“¿Sesenta mil? Daniel, eso no es dinero que uno presta como si fueran cincuenta dólares para gasolina.””
“I know, Dad. But this is temporary. I have two contracts about to close.””
Robert asked to see the paperwork.
Daniel showed him a series of documents, spreadsheets, and printed emails. Everything appeared professional enough to satisfy a father who desperately wanted to believe his son was finally building something solid.
“¿Claire sabe de esto?””, Robert asked.
Daniel looked away.
“Ella ya ha hecho demasiado por mí. No quiero preocuparla.””
The answer touched Robert’s pride. He imagined his son trying to protect his wife from another burden.
So he agreed to help.
Daniel signed a promissory note acknowledging the $60,000 debt. They agreed that repayment would begin within six months.
Before leaving, Daniel hugged his father.
“Te prometo que no te voy a fallar.””
Robert remembered that promise now as Vanessa demanded another bottle of wine.
“Daniel, dile al mesero que traiga otra”, she said.
“Claro.””
Robert frowned.
“¿No han pedido ya suficiente?””
Vanessa laughed.
“¡Ay, papá! Es tu cumpleaños. No vas a empezar a contar copas ahora.””
Mark joined in.
“Además, Claire está aquí.””
A few relatives chuckled.
Robert's expression hardened.
“¿Y qué tiene que ver Claire?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“Pues que ella siempre se encarga de estas cosas.””
Claire slowly placed her fork on the table.
“Esta noche no.””
The conversation stopped for a second.
Daniel leaned toward her.
“¿Qué dijiste?””
“Que esta noche no me encargo de las cuentas de nadie más.””
Vanessa let out a disbelieving laugh.
“¿Estás hablando en serio?””
“Completamente.””
Daniel forced a smile toward the rest of the table.
“Mi esposa está cansada. No le hagan caso.””
Claire turned to him.
“No estoy cansada, Daniel. Estoy perfectamente bien.””
Robert watched his son’s jaw tighten.
Then the waiter arrived with the first bottle of wine.
Dinner continued, but the atmosphere had changed. Vanessa complained that her steak was not cooked exactly as she liked it. Mark ordered another appetizer. Daniel kept glancing toward Claire, waiting for her to retreat into her familiar role.
She didn't.
When the dessert menus arrived, Robert leaned toward her.
“Claire, ¿puedo hablar contigo un momento?””
“Claro, Robert.””
They stepped into the quiet hallway outside the private room.
Robert lowered his voice.
“Quiero preguntarte algo, y necesito que seas completamente honesta conmigo.””
Claire nodded.
“¿Daniel todavía tiene problemas con su negocio?””
She hesitated.
“Me dice que sí. Pero ya no sé qué creer.””
Robert felt a cold sensation spread through his chest.
“¿Por qué?””
Claire looked down at her hands.
“Porque le he prestado dinero varias veces. Cada vez me promete que me lo va a devolver. Y cuando le pregunto por el negocio, cambia de tema.””
“¿Cuánto le has prestado?””
“Veintisiete mil quinientos dólares, sin contar lo que he pagado para su familia.””
Robert stared at her.
“¿Veintisiete mil quinientos?””
“Sí.””
“¿Y nunca te ha devuelto nada?””
Claire shook her head.
Robert gripped the edge of a narrow console table.
The $60,000 he had given Daniel was supposed to stabilize the business. If Claire had also been financing his expenses, then where had all that money gone?
“Claire, ¿Daniel te ha pedido dinero durante los últimos seis meses?””
“Sí. Me pidió otros diez mil en abril, pero me negué. Me dijo que yo estaba destruyendo nuestro matrimonio por ser demasiado desconfiada.””
Robert closed his eyes.
For the first time, the possibility of deliberate deception felt impossible to ignore.
“Necesito revisar unos documentos”, he said.
Claire studied his face.
“¿Qué documentos?””
Robert opened his mouth, then stopped.
He had promised Daniel that their loan arrangement would remain private until the business recovered. He had never imagined that keeping the secret might mean helping his son deceive his wife.
“Hay algo que no te he contado”, he finally admitted.
“Hace seis meses, Daniel me pidió sesenta mil dólares.””
Claire went completely still.
“¿Qué?””
“Dijo que su negocio necesitaba capital. Firmó un documento comprometiéndose a devolverme el dinero.””
Claire's face lost its color.
“Daniel me dijo que su negocio estaba mejorando. Me pidió dinero para cubrir unos gastos personales, y yo pensé que solamente estaba pasando por una mala racha.””
Robert shook his head.
“No sé dónde está ese dinero. Pero voy a averiguarlo.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Claire asked the question Robert had been dreading.
“¿Por qué nunca me lo dijo?””
Robert had no answer.
When they returned to the dining room, Daniel was standing beside his chair, talking loudly about a new business opportunity.
“En cuanto cierre este contrato, todo va a cambiar”, he told his uncle.
“Voy a poder invertir en propiedades y dejar de preocuparme por los gastos pequeños.””
Claire heard every word.
She sat down without looking at him.
The waiter soon appeared with a leather folder.
Daniel reached for it automatically.
“Dámela a mí”, he said.
“Yo me encargo.””
The waiter politely placed the folder in front of Claire instead.
“Su esposa ya pagó su cuenta, señor. Y la del cumpleañero. Las demás familias tienen sus propias cuentas.””
Daniel opened the folder.
He stared at the amount.
Then he looked at the waiter.
“Esto debe ser un error.””
“No, señor. La señora Mitchell confirmó el arreglo con la administración.””
Daniel turned toward Claire, his cheeks reddening.
“¿Qué demonios hiciste?””
Claire met his eyes.
“Pagué lo que me correspondía.””
“¡Son veintidós personas!””
“Exactamente. Y yo soy una.””
Vanessa pushed her chair backward.
“¡Esto es humillante!””
Claire's voice remained calm.
“¿Humillante para quién, Vanessa? ¿Para la mujer que lleva seis años pagando o para las personas que llevan seis años esperando que lo haga?””
Nobody laughed.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Vamos a hablar de esto en casa.””
“No. Vamos a hablar de todo ahora.””
Robert slowly stood up.
“Creo que Claire tiene razón.””
Daniel stared at his father.
“Papá, no te metas.””
Robert placed both hands on the table.
“Me voy a meter, hijo. Sobre todo porque hay algo que debes explicarnos.””
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
Daniel saw the paper.
His face changed so quickly that Claire noticed immediately.
“¿Qué es eso?””, she asked.
Robert unfolded the document and placed it beside Daniel’s untouched dessert.
“Es el reconocimiento de deuda que firmaste cuando te presté sesenta mil dólares.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
Daniel looked around the table.
“Esto no es asunto de nadie más.””
Robert’s voice turned cold.
“Entonces explícales a tu esposa y a tu familia por qué todavía no me has devuelto un solo dólar.””
Daniel lunged for the document, but Robert pulled it away.
And then Robert revealed the detail that made Claire's stomach drop.
“Porque el banco me llamó esta mañana. Al parecer, el dinero nunca llegó a la cuenta de tu negocio.””
The room fell silent.
Claire turned toward her husband.
Daniel's lips parted, but no words came out.
Then his phone vibrated on the table.
A message appeared on the screen from a name Claire had never seen before.
*Transferencia recibida.
Robert read it over Daniel’s shoulder.
“¿Qué casa?””, he whispered.
Daniel snatched up his phone.
But it was too late.
Claire had already seen the next notification appear beneath the first.
It contained an address.
An address she recognized immediately.
May you like
Because it belonged to the house Daniel had sworn he could never afford.
And it wasn't their home.
