Chapter 9: The Daughter Who Finally Spoke

By Saturday afternoon, Leon had arranged a meeting with Daniel.

He also contacted the property agency to request copies of every document associated with the reservation.

The agency agreed to provide them.

But one detail remained unclear.

Who had authorized the payment?

And why had Denise told the agency that Leon had already agreed?

At three o'clock, Leon returned home.

Miles was in the backyard shooting baskets.

Tessa sat on the patio steps, watching him.

For the first time that weekend, they seemed almost like ordinary siblings.

Miles missed a shot.

Tessa laughed.

"You're terrible!""

Miles caught the ball.

"You're welcome to try.""

"I don't want to break a nail.""

He grinned.

"Excuses.""

Tessa stood and took the ball.

She threw it.

It bounced off the rim and rolled across the grass.

Miles laughed.

"See?""

Tessa pushed his shoulder.

"Don't tell anyone.""

Leon watched from the kitchen window.

He smiled briefly.

Then he heard the front door open.

Denise walked inside.

She placed her handbag on the counter.

"We need to talk.""

Leon turned.

"About what?""

"Mark called.""

Leon nodded.

"And?""

"He says the seller is getting impatient.""

"Then perhaps the seller should speak to the person who actually agreed to buy the property.""

Denise stared at him.

"You're being deliberately difficult.""

"I'm asking for the documents.""

She opened her handbag and removed a folder.

She placed it on the counter.

"Here.""

Leon opened it.

There were several pages.

A reservation agreement.

A payment schedule.

A property description.

And a declaration confirming that the buyer intended to complete the purchase using proceeds from the sale or transfer of their existing property.

Leon read the final page.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

He stared at it.

Then he looked at Denise.

"Where did you get this signature?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"From the documents we signed when we bought this house.""

"You copied my signature?""

"I didn't think it would be a problem.""

Leon closed the folder.

"Did you submit this?""

Denise said nothing.

"Denise, did you submit a document with my signature without my permission?""

She folded her arms.

"I was trying to move things forward.""

Leon stepped back.

"That's not an answer.""

She finally whispered, "Yes.""

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he picked up his phone.

"I'm calling Daniel.""

Denise reached for his arm.

"Don't.""

He stepped away.

"Why?""

"Because this could ruin everything.""

Leon looked at her.

"You've already put everything at risk.""

He called Daniel and explained what he'd found.

Daniel listened carefully.

Then he asked Leon to photograph every page.

Leon did.

A few minutes later, Daniel called back.

"Leon, I need you to be very careful here. Don't sign anything else. Don't agree to any amendments. We need to preserve these documents and establish whether the agency received an unauthorized declaration.""

Leon looked at Denise.

"Understood.""

When the call ended, Denise sat down.

Her face had lost its color.

"You've made me look like a criminal.""

Leon shook his head.

"I didn't create these documents.""

"I was trying to make our lives better!""

"By copying my signature?""

She wiped her eyes.

"I thought you'd eventually agree.""

Leon sat opposite her.

"Why didn't you ask?""

"Because you always say no when it comes to Miles.""

Leon stared at her.

"That isn't true.""

"It is!""

"Give me one example of a decision I've refused to make because of Miles.""

Denise opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Leon continued.

"You wanted a new school for Tessa. I said we'd discuss it. You wanted a bigger house.

I said we'd look at the finances. You wanted to reorganize the bedrooms. I said we'd talk.""

He leaned forward.

"None of those things required you to remove my son from his life.""

Denise looked toward the backyard.

Miles and Tessa were now sitting on the grass, sharing a packet of crisps.

She watched them for a moment.

Then she whispered, "I never thought they'd get along.""

Leon looked at her.

"They're children. They were never the problem.""

Denise shook her head.

"Maybe I made a mistake.""

Leon didn't respond.

She continued.

"I thought if Miles stopped coming, everything would become easier.""

"And now?""

Denise looked at him.

"Now I don't know.""

The front doorbell rang.

Leon stood.

He walked to the entrance and opened the door.

Claire stood outside.

She was holding a small overnight bag.

"Hi, Leon.""

He looked surprised.

"Claire? Is everything okay?""

She nodded.

"I came to pick up Miles's school jacket. He left it at my place last weekend.""

Leon stepped aside.

"Come in.""

Claire entered.

She noticed Denise immediately.

"Hello.""

Denise gave a stiff nod.

"Claire.""

Leon explained what had happened with the property documents.

Claire listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she looked at Miles through the glass doors.

"Does he know?""

"Some of it," Leon replied.

Claire nodded.

Then she turned toward Denise.

"I want to ask you something.""

Denise crossed her arms.

"What?""

"Why have you made him feel unwanted?""

Denise looked away.

"That's between me and Leon.""

"No," Claire replied calmly.

"It concerns my son, too.""

Denise's jaw tightened.

Claire continued.

"He comes home from your house and tells me he doesn't want to cause trouble. He apologizes for asking his father to attend school events. He even asks whether he should stop calling Leon during the week.""

Leon looked down.

He hadn't known about that.

Claire's voice softened.

"Do you understand what that does to a child?""

Denise didn't answer.

Claire took a breath.

"I'm not asking you to love Miles like your own child. I'm asking you not to punish him for being his father's son.""

Denise looked at her.

For a moment, the two women simply stared at each other.

Then Tessa appeared in the doorway.

She had heard the conversation.

"Mom?""

Denise turned.

Tessa walked toward her.

"I want to say something.""

Denise sighed.

"Not now, Tessa.""

"Please.""

The girl looked at her mother.

"I thought if Miles stopped coming, you'd be happier. So sometimes I didn't ask him to play games with me. I didn't tell him when my friends were coming over. I thought that was what you wanted.""

Miles had come inside behind her.

He stood near the door.

Tessa looked at him.

"But I miss having my brother around.""

Miles stared at her.

Then he smiled slightly.

"You can still ask me to play games.""

Tessa wiped her eyes.

"Even if I beat you?""

"That's never going to happen.""

She laughed through her tears.

Leon looked at the two children.

Then he turned toward Denise.

"Look at them.""

Denise's face crumpled.

For the first time, she seemed to understand the damage her decisions had caused.

But Leon wasn't finished.

He opened the folder and placed the copied signature in front of her.

"We need to deal with this properly. The property reservation, the financial transfer, the school application, and everything you've submitted.""

Denise nodded slowly.

"I know.""

"And until we've sorted everything out, no further financial decisions are being made.""

She looked at him.

"Are you saying you don't trust me?""

Leon held her gaze.

"I'm saying trust doesn't survive when someone secretly signs your name.""

The room became quiet.

Then Claire picked up the overnight bag.

"I should go.""

Leon nodded.

"Thank you for coming.""

She turned toward Miles.

"Call me later, sweetheart.""

"Okay, Mom.""

After Claire left, Leon walked into the living room.

Miles sat beside Tessa.

Denise remained standing near the kitchen counter.

She looked at the two children.

Then she looked at her husband.

"Can we start over?""

Leon took a long breath.

"Starting over doesn't mean pretending nothing happened.""

Denise nodded.

"I understand.""

But just as she reached for the folder, Leon's phone rang.

It was Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?""

Daniel's voice was serious.

"Leon, there's something else in the paperwork.""

Leon looked at Denise.

"What?""

"The property agency has sent me a copy of the original buyer declaration. It contains a clause requiring confirmation of the current household's occupancy arrangements.""

Leon frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means someone formally declared that the existing occupants would vacate the property before completion.""

Leon went still.

"Who?""

Daniel paused.

Then he answered.

"Your wife listed herself and Tessa as the only intended residents of the new property. Your son was specifically excluded from the household declaration.""

Leon slowly turned toward Denise.

She was staring at the floor.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

"There's another issue. The agency says the declaration was accompanied by a signed letter from you confirming that Miles would no longer be staying at your current address.""

Leon felt the blood drain from his face.

He looked at his son.

Miles was watching him.

And this time, Leon knew there was no way to soften the truth.

Denise hadn't merely hoped Miles would leave.

She had put it in writing.

She had signed his father's name beneath it.

May you like

And on Monday morning, the agency was expecting Leon to confirm it.

*He had forty-eight hours to decide what to do next.*
