Chapter 6: The Decision Made Behind His Back
Leon stood motionless.
"What school enrollment?""
Denise slipped her phone into her pocket.
"Nothing important.""
"Then show me.""
"Leon, please.""
"Show me.""
Her expression hardened.
"You don't get to demand access to everything I do.""
Leon nodded slowly.
"You're right. But you don't get to make major decisions about our household and expect me to sign documents without knowing what they are.""
Denise turned away.
Tessa had come closer to the kitchen.
She looked worried.
"Mom, is this about my school?""
Denise glanced at her.
"Go upstairs, sweetheart.""
"Am I changing schools?""
Denise didn't answer.
Tessa looked at Leon.
"Dad?""
Leon crouched slightly so they were at eye level.
"I don't know yet. But nobody is changing anything without talking to you.""
Denise exhaled sharply.
"You're making promises you can't keep.""
Leon stood.
"Why don't you tell me what the application is?""
Denise finally took out her phone.
She opened an email.
A private school had sent her a preliminary enrollment form for Tessa.
The school was nearly forty minutes away.
The tuition was considerably higher than Tessa's current school.
Leon scrolled down.
There was a section asking for household information.
Another requested details about the child's legal guardians.
Then he reached the payment arrangement.
His name was listed as the primary financial guarantor.
He looked at Denise.
"You've applied for a school that costs almost twice as much as Tessa's current one.""
"I want the best education for my daughter.""
"She's already getting a good education.""
"This school has better facilities.""
"Have you visited it?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Last month.""
Leon put the phone down.
"And you didn't think to tell me?""
"I knew you'd complain about the cost.""
"Because it's a significant financial commitment!""
Denise folded her arms.
"You're always willing to spend money when it comes to Miles.""
Miles looked up from the living room.
Leon turned toward his wife.
"Don't do that.""
"Do what?""
"Turn this into a competition between two children.""
Denise looked toward Miles.
"He gets everything he wants.""
Miles shook his head.
"I don't.""
The words were quiet, but everyone heard them.
Denise turned.
"What?""
Miles looked at his father.
"I don't get everything I want. I just want to spend weekends with Dad.""
Leon walked toward him.
"That's all you've ever asked for.""
Denise looked away.
For a moment, the room seemed to settle.
Then Tessa spoke.
"Mom, I don't want to change schools.""
Denise turned sharply.
"Why not?""
"My friends are here.""
"You'll make new friends.""
"I like my teachers.""
"You'll have better teachers.""
Tessa shook her head.
"I don't want to go.""
Denise's expression became frustrated.
"Do you understand how much I'm doing for you?""
Tessa looked down.
"I didn't ask you to.""
Leon stepped forward.
"Denise, stop.""
She turned toward him.
"You're encouraging her to disrespect me!""
"No. She's telling you what she wants.""
Denise picked up the phone again.
"I cannot believe this. I spend months trying to improve our family's future, and everyone acts as if I'm doing something terrible.""
Leon looked at her.
"Because you've been making decisions for everyone without asking anyone.""
He took a breath.
"Tomorrow, we're going to speak with the school. The application will not be submitted until we both agree.""
Denise shook her head.
"You can't control everything.""
"I'm not trying to control you. I'm trying to make sure we make decisions together.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Together. That's an interesting word coming from a man who spends every other weekend with his son and expects me to adjust.""
Leon stared at her.
Then he asked a question he'd been avoiding for months.
"Do you resent Miles because he reminds you that I had a family before you?""
Denise went still.
Her eyes shifted toward the living room.
Miles was watching them.
"Don't psychoanalyze me," she said.
"I'm asking you a question.""
She picked up a glass of water and drank.
Then she placed it down.
"I didn't marry you to spend the rest of my life sharing you with another woman.""
Leon frowned.
"Claire and I aren't together.""
"She still calls you. She still messages you. She still has a place in your life.""
"She's Miles's mother.""
"And every time she calls, you respond.""
"Because it's about our child!""
Denise looked at him.
"Exactly.""
Leon was silent.
She continued.
"I wanted a fresh start. A family that belonged to us. Not one where your previous marriage is always sitting at the dinner table.""
Miles lowered his eyes.
He understood something now.
No matter how quietly he behaved, no matter how little space he occupied, his existence reminded Denise of something she couldn't erase.
His father had loved someone before her.
And he had a son.
Leon took a slow breath.
"You knew I had a son when you married me.""
Denise nodded.
"I thought it would be different.""
"Different how?""
"I thought he'd grow up and become independent. I thought the visits would become less frequent.""
Miles looked up.
"Why?""
Denise turned toward him.
"Because you wouldn't need your father as much.""
Miles's voice trembled.
"But I still want him.""
Leon moved beside his son.
"And you'll always have him.""
For several seconds, Denise didn't respond.
Then she picked up her phone and walked toward the staircase.
"I'm going to bed.""
Leon didn't stop her.
He waited until her footsteps disappeared.
Then he looked at Miles.
"Come with me.""
They walked into the kitchen.
Leon opened the refrigerator and took out the leftover pizza.
"Are you hungry?""
Miles shook his head.
"Not really.""
"Me neither. But I think we both need something to eat.""
Leon put two slices on plates and heated them.
Miles sat at the counter.
After a moment, he spoke.
"Dad?""
"Yeah?""
"Would things be easier if I came less often?""
Leon stopped moving.
He turned around.
"No.""
"But Denise—"
"Listen to me, Miles.""
Leon placed the plates on the counter and sat beside him.
"You are not going to make yourself smaller to keep someone else comfortable.""
Miles stared at the pizza.
"I don't want you to lose your marriage because of me.""
Leon put his hand on his son's shoulder.
"Your existence isn't a threat to my marriage. If someone treats it that way, that's a problem they need to face.""
Miles nodded, but his eyes were wet.
Leon reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
"I was going to give you this tomorrow.""
Miles opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Leon holding a tiny baby in a hospital room.
Miles recognized himself immediately.
He was wrapped in a white blanket, his eyes barely open.
On the back, Leon had written:
The day I became a father. The best day of my life.
Miles ran his thumb across the handwriting.
"I remember this picture.""
"I keep it in my wallet.""
Miles looked up.
"Really?""
"Always.""
For the first time that evening, he smiled.
But their quiet moment didn't last.
A notification sounded from Leon's phone.
It was an email from the school.
*Subject: Confirmation Required — Proposed Change of Household Residence and Guardian Details.*
Leon frowned.
He opened it.
The message explained that an enrollment inquiry had been submitted using his name and signature as the financial guarantor.
But there was another detail.
The application listed a proposed change of address for Tessa.
Leon read the address.
Then he read it again.
It wasn't their current house.
It was a property across town.
He looked toward the staircase.
"Denise?""
No answer.
He opened the attached document.
The final page contained a declaration authorizing the school to contact the listed guardians.
At the bottom was a signature that looked remarkably like his.
But Leon had never signed it.
His face hardened.
He turned the phone toward Miles.
"Son, I think we need to find out what your stepmother has been planning.""
Then another email arrived.
This one was from the property consultant.
*Subject: Urgent — Your Wife's Property Proposal.*
Leon opened it.
The first line made his blood run cold.
As requested, I've prepared the documents to transfer the current property into your wife's sole ownership before the new family arrangement begins.
Leon slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
Because Denise hadn't simply been trying to take Miles's bedroom.
She had been making plans for a future in which Leon, too, might no longer have a say in his own home.
