Chapter 5: The Message That Changed Everything

Leon didn't immediately confront his wife.

He stood by the window, watching her pace across the porch.

Denise was speaking rapidly, occasionally turning her back toward the house.

Miles sat on the sofa.

Tessa sat beside him, leaving a small gap between them.

Neither child spoke.

Leon walked over and sat in the chair opposite them.

"Are you both okay?""

Tessa shook her head.

Miles shrugged.

Leon looked at his son.

"You don't have to pretend this doesn't bother you.""

Miles stared at his hands.

"I just don't understand why she hates having me here.""

Leon leaned forward.

"I don't know everything that's going through her mind. But I know you haven't done anything wrong.""

Miles nodded.

"Sometimes I think if I were nicer to her, she'd like me more.""

Leon felt something tighten in his chest.

"Listen to me. You are not responsible for making an adult treat you properly.""

Tessa looked at him.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Can I tell you something?""

"Of course.""

Tessa hesitated.

Then she looked toward the front door.

"Mom has been talking about Miles when you aren't around.""

Leon remained still.

"What has she been saying?""

"She says he's lucky because you always put him first.""

Miles looked at her.

"I never asked Dad to do that.""

"I know," Tessa whispered.

She continued.

"Sometimes she says you spend too much money on him. She says his school things and clothes cost money that should be spent on us.""

Leon frowned.

"Has she said anything else?""

Tessa nodded.

"She said that if Miles stopped coming, we could use the spare bedroom for something else.""

Miles looked confused.

"What would we use it for?""

Tessa hesitated.

"A home office.""

Leon stared at her.

Then he looked toward the staircase.

The room had been Miles's bedroom since before he could remember.

It had always contained his belongings.

His clothes.

His schoolbooks.

His childhood toys.

He had never thought of it as a spare room.

"Did Mom tell you that?""

Tessa nodded.

"She said it would make the house feel more like ours.""

Miles looked down.

He didn't say anything.

But Leon noticed the way his son rubbed his thumb against the side of his index finger.

It was something he used to do when he was little and nervous.

Leon remembered it from school meetings, dentist appointments, and the first day of kindergarten.

He had seen it countless times.

Somehow, he'd missed it lately.

The front door opened.

Denise walked back inside.

Her phone was still in her hand.

"What's going on?""

Leon looked at her.

"We're talking.""

She glanced at the children.

"About what?""

"About the things you've been saying when I'm not here.""

Denise gave a short laugh.

"Wonderful. So now we're having a family meeting about me.""

Leon stood.

"I want to know who Mark is.""

The color drained from her face.

"What?""

"Mark. The person you were messaging.""

Denise tightened her grip on her phone.

"He's a friend.""

"What does he have to do with Miles?""

"Nothing.""

Leon watched her carefully.

"Then why did he ask whether you managed to get my son out tonight?""

Denise stared at him.

Tessa looked between them.

Miles slowly sat upright.

Denise's voice became defensive.

"You were looking at my private messages?""

"They were visible on the screen.""

"That's still none of your business.""

Leon didn't raise his voice.

"When someone discusses removing my child from his home, it becomes my business.""

Denise walked toward the kitchen.

"I am not discussing this in front of them.""

Leon followed her.

"Then explain it to me now.""

She turned.

"Mark is helping me with a few things.""

"What things?""

"Household arrangements.""

"Which arrangements?""

Denise sighed.

"You're exhausting.""

Leon remained silent.

She finally placed her phone on the counter.

"Mark is a property consultant.""

Leon frowned.

"Property consultant?""

"Yes.""

"Why are you speaking to a property consultant about Miles?""

Denise looked away.

"I wanted to know whether the house could be reorganized.""

Leon stared at her.

"Reorganized how?""

She hesitated.

Then she opened a document on her phone.

It was a floor plan.

Leon recognized the address immediately.

Their address.

He studied the drawing.

The spare bedroom had been marked as an office.

The hallway storage had been redesigned.

And the bedroom where Miles slept had a note beside it.

Convert to guest room or nursery.

Leon looked up.

"Nursery?""

Denise quickly took the phone back.

"It's just an idea.""

"Why would we need a nursery?""

She crossed her arms.

"Because I want another baby.""

The silence was immediate.

Leon looked at her.

"You never told me that.""

"I was waiting for the right time.""

"When were you planning to tell me?""

"When things were settled.""

Leon glanced toward the living room.

Miles had heard everything.

His expression was difficult to read.

Tessa looked genuinely confused.

"Mom, you want a baby?""

Denise nodded.

"Your father and I have talked about expanding our family.""

Leon shook his head.

"We have discussed possibilities. We haven't made a decision.""

Denise's eyes narrowed.

"Well, I have.""

Leon looked back at the floor plan.

"Is this why you've been trying to move Miles out?""

Denise didn't answer.

He continued.

"You want his room.""

"I want a room for our future child.""

"And where does Miles sleep?""

"He can stay with his mother.""

Leon stared at her.

"That's not an option.""

Denise's voice sharpened.

"Why not? He has a perfectly good bedroom there.""

Miles stood up.

"Mom's apartment doesn't have another bedroom.""

Denise looked irritated.

"Then he can sleep on the sofa.""

Leon stepped between them.

"Enough.""

Denise threw her hands up.

"You're making this sound cruel!""

Leon looked at the floor plan again.

Then he noticed a date in the corner.

It had been created two months earlier.

Two months.

Before the argument.

Before the sleepover.

Before Miles had arrived with his overnight bag.

Leon turned toward his wife.

"You've been planning this for months.""

Denise looked at him.

"I was trying to create a better future for us.""

Leon placed the phone on the counter.

"Without discussing it with me?""

"Because I knew you'd say no!""

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he asked quietly:

"Is there anything else you've arranged without telling me?""

Denise didn't move.

Her phone vibrated again.

A message appeared across the screen.

This time, Leon saw the preview clearly.

The application is ready. Just need your husband's signature.

Leon read it twice.

Then he looked directly at Denise.

"What application?""

She snatched the phone off the counter.

But it was too late.

Leon had already seen the words beneath the notification.

May you like

*School Enrollment — Tessa.*

And suddenly, he realized the problem might be much bigger than a bedroom.
