Chapter 9: The Father Who Never Asked to Be Chosen

At 12:05 p.m., Kiara was still holding Malcolm's letter.

The ceremony was supposed to begin in twenty-five minutes.

Guests were arriving downstairs. The musicians were checking their instruments. The wedding coordinator was waiting for a final decision about the ballroom.

But Kiara couldn't look at the wedding schedule anymore.

She could only look at the letter.

Marcus sat beside her.

Celeste stood near the window.

Vanessa had explained the trust provisions, but Kiara barely heard the legal details.

She was focused on one sentence.

I don't want you to inherit money because you feel obligated to call me your father. I want you to have something because you understand what it means to build a life without depending on somebody else's promises.

Kiara wiped her eyes.

There was more.

If you ever find yourself choosing between someone who wants the benefits of being family and someone who has consistently shown up for you, remember that love is not measured by biology, gifts, or the words people use in public.

She looked toward Celeste.

"Mom, did you know he wrote this?""

Celeste shook her head.

"No.""

Kiara lowered the letter.

"Why didn't you tell me about the trust?""

"I thought Malcolm wanted to surprise you.""

"But you knew he was saving money for me.""

"Yes.""

"And you still let me treat him like that?""

Celeste's eyes filled.

"I thought he would forgive you.""

Kiara looked at her mother.

"That's not the same as stopping me.""

Celeste sat down.

"I know.""

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioner.

Then Kiara asked something she had been afraid to ask.

"Did you ever think about how he felt?""

Celeste looked up.

"Every day.""

"Then why did you tell him to know his place?""

Celeste pressed her lips together.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing the relationship I had with you.""

Kiara frowned.

Celeste continued.

"When you told me you wanted Darius at the wedding, I knew Malcolm would be hurt. But I thought if I supported you, you would see me as the mother who understood you.""

She looked down at her hands.

"I didn't realize I was asking him to swallow his pain so I could avoid an argument.""

Kiara's expression softened slightly.

"Mom...""

"I watched him raise you. I watched him work overtime to pay for your school trips. I watched him sit in emergency rooms and wait outside dance studios.""

Celeste's voice cracked.

"And when you called him your mother's husband, I stood beside you.""

She covered her face.

"I'm ashamed.""

Kiara moved toward her mother.

But before she could speak, Vanessa cleared her throat.

"There is one additional matter.""

Marcus looked up.

"What?""

Vanessa opened the folder again.

"The trust includes a provision concerning the original property.""

Kiara frowned.

"What property?""

"A small commercial building in Richmond. Malcolm transferred ownership of his share into the trust.""

Kiara looked confused.

"Why?""

"It generates rental income. He intended it to become part of your financial foundation.""

Vanessa turned another page.

"However, there is an outstanding claim against the property from a business entity connected to Mr. Coleman.""

Celeste went still.

Kiara looked up.

"Darius?""

Vanessa nodded.

"His company previously entered into a financing arrangement involving that building. The trust documents were structured to prevent any attempt to transfer the liability to you.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"How much?""

Vanessa gave him the amount.

His expression changed.

"That's enormous.""

Kiara looked at the figure.

She didn't understand every detail, but she understood enough.

Darius's company had financial problems.

He had approached her because he believed Malcolm's trust could help him.

And he had apparently expected her to sign documents without understanding what she was agreeing to.

"Can he take the property?"" Kiara asked.

"Not through the documents he presented to you. But we need to examine the underlying financing agreement.""

Vanessa closed the folder.

"I recommend that you sign nothing today.""

Kiara nodded.

"I won't.""

Her phone vibrated.

A message from the wedding coordinator appeared.

*Miss Johnson, we need your final decision. The ballroom remains on hold.*

Kiara looked at Marcus.

"What do we do?""

He took her hand.

"We can still get married. But we need to decide what kind of wedding we're having.""

She looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I don't want a ceremony built around pretending everything is perfect.""

He glanced toward the white rose box.

"And I don't want you marrying me while you're still trying to prove something to two different fathers.""

Kiara swallowed.

"I don't want Darius walking me down the aisle.""

Celeste looked up.

"Are you sure?""

Kiara nodded.

"I don't want him near the ceremony.""

Marcus remained quiet.

Kiara continued.

"And I don't want Malcolm to walk me down the aisle just because I suddenly realized I need him.""

She looked at the door.

"I want to ask him. But I need to ask him for the right reason.""

Marcus nodded.

"Then go talk to him.""

She stood.

Celeste immediately reached for her handbag.

"I'll come with you.""

Kiara shook her head.

"No, Mom.""

Celeste looked wounded.

"Why?""

"Because I need to do this myself.""

Vanessa gathered the documents.

"I can remain here and speak with the hotel coordinator if necessary.""

Marcus stood.

"I'll go with you.""

Kiara shook her head again.

"Please. I need a few minutes alone with him.""

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"Okay.""

She took the white rose from the box.

For a moment, she held it against her chest.

Then she left the suite.

Downstairs, Malcolm stood near the hotel's front entrance.

He had removed his jacket and was holding his phone.

A small paper coffee cup sat beside him on a table.

He looked tired.

Not angry.

Just tired.

Kiara approached slowly.

"Dad?""

He looked up.

For one second, neither moved.

Then Malcolm set down his phone.

"Kiara.""

She stopped a few feet away.

"I read your letter.""

He looked at the white rose in her hand.

"Vanessa gave it to you?""

"Yes.""

He nodded.

"Good.""

Kiara's eyes filled.

"I didn't know about the trust.""

"I know.""

"I didn't know Darius was planning to use it.""

"I figured.""

"I should have told you that you were my father.""

Malcolm looked at her for a long moment.

Then he answered.

"You shouldn't have had to tell me. You knew.""

She lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

He gestured toward the chair beside him.

"Sit down, sweetheart.""

She sat.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she finally said what she had been rehearsing in her head.

"I'm sorry.""

Malcolm nodded.

"Thank you.""

"I was wrong.""

"Yes.""

"I let Darius make me feel like I had to choose him because he was my biological father.""

Malcolm looked out through the glass doors.

"Nobody should have to choose between biology and love.""

Kiara wiped her cheek.

"Do you still want to walk me down the aisle?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the white rose.

"Why?""

She swallowed.

"Because you're the man who raised me. Because you were there when I needed somebody. Because I was wrong to make you feel like you were only useful when I needed money.""

Malcolm's expression softened.

But he still didn't reach for her hand.

"Kiara, I love you. That hasn't changed.""

She nodded.

"But walking you down the aisle is an honor. It's not something you can demand after taking it away.""

"I know.""

"And I won't do it just to make the guests happy.""

"I don't want that.""

He looked directly at her.

"Then what do you want?""

She placed the rose on the table between them.

"I want my father.""

Malcolm looked down.

The words he had waited eighteen years to hear came quietly.

Not in a grocery store.

Not during a school performance.

Not after a birthday present.

But in a hotel lobby, after she had nearly lost everything that mattered.

He reached for the flower.

Then he stopped.

"There's something you need to understand before I answer.""

Kiara nodded.

Malcolm leaned forward.

"I didn't raise you so you would owe me the rest of your life.""

Her tears fell.

"I know.""

"I don't need the trust. I don't need the wedding photographs. I don't need people downstairs calling me Dad.""

He paused.

"I just need you to understand that being family means showing up when there's nothing to gain.""

Kiara nodded repeatedly.

"I understand.""

He studied her face.

Then his phone rang.

The screen displayed a number he recognized.

It was Darius.

Malcolm answered.

"Hello?""

Darius's voice came through immediately.

"Malcolm, we need to talk. There's something you don't know about that property.""

Malcolm's expression changed.

"What about it?""

Darius lowered his voice.

"The debt attached to the building isn't the only problem.""

Malcolm stood.

"What are you talking about?""

Darius hesitated.

Then he said:

"There's another name on the original agreement. And if Kiara accepts that inheritance, she could become responsible for more than the property.""

Malcolm looked at Kiara.

Her face went pale.

"Who?"" he asked.

Darius answered.

"Celeste.""

Malcolm slowly lowered the phone.

And for the first time that morning, the problem wasn't about who would pay for the wedding.

May you like

It was about what his wife had signed years earlier.

And whether the woman he had loved for twenty years had put their daughter in danger without telling him.
