Chapter 7: The Debt That Was Never Mine

"Marcus, what debt?""

Kiara stood motionless in the middle of the bridal suite.

Her fiancé's voice came through the phone, low and strained.

"Your biological father contacted me yesterday.""

Kiara looked directly at Darius.

Darius immediately shook his head.

"Don't listen to him.""

Marcus continued.

"He told me there was an investment opportunity involving a property in Henrico County. He said you would be receiving money from a family trust and that we could use part of it to settle an outstanding business obligation.""

Kiara's lips parted.

"What business obligation?""

"That's what I asked him.""

Darius moved toward her.

"Give me the phone.""

Kiara stepped away.

"No.""

Marcus continued.

"He told me the debt was connected to a business he had been running. Apparently, he needed money to prevent a foreclosure.""

Kiara looked at her mother.

Celeste's face had gone pale.

"Daddy?"" Kiara whispered.

Darius rubbed his forehead.

"Baby, this is being blown out of proportion.""

"Is there a debt?""

"Every businessman has financial obligations.""

"Is there a debt?""

He looked toward the window.

"Yes.""

Kiara closed her eyes.

Marcus's voice became sharper.

"Kiara, I need you to understand something. Your father wanted you to sign documents transferring money from Malcolm's trust into an account connected to his company.""

"What?""

"He said it was temporary. He promised the money would be returned.""

Darius stepped forward.

"That's not what I said.""

Kiara raised her hand.

"Stop talking!""

The makeup artist quietly gathered her brushes and slipped out of the room.

Celeste approached her daughter.

"Kiara, listen to Marcus first.""

Kiara turned toward her.

"You knew?""

Celeste shook her head.

"I knew Darius had financial problems. I didn't know he was planning to use your trust.""

Darius laughed bitterly.

"Everybody is acting like I'm some kind of criminal.""

Marcus interrupted.

"Then explain why you sent me a document yesterday with Kiara's name on it.""

Darius's expression changed.

Kiara stared at him.

"You sent Marcus documents?""

"I was trying to help you both.""

"Help us do what?""

"Build a future!""

Marcus spoke again.

"Kiara, I looked at the paperwork. It wasn't a normal gift agreement. It involved a personal guarantee against assets that weren't even in your name yet.""

Kiara felt dizzy.

She sat down slowly.

The white wedding dress hanging nearby seemed impossibly bright.

She had spent months choosing that dress.

Months imagining the photographs.

Months planning the moment she would walk down the aisle.

And now the two men who claimed to be her fathers had brought her into a financial arrangement she didn't understand.

"Marcus," she whispered, "did you sign anything?""

"No.""

She released a breath.

"Thank God.""

"There's something else.""

Her heart dropped.

"What?""

"Your father told me Malcolm had agreed to release the trust funds.""

Kiara looked at Darius.

"Why would you say that?""

Darius's jaw tightened.

"Because I believed he would eventually do the right thing.""

Malcolm's absence suddenly felt enormous.

Kiara remembered how he had looked at her when she placed the flower in the box.

He hadn't shouted.

He hadn't insulted her.

He had simply put away his wallet.

And somehow, that had been more frightening than anything Darius had said.

Marcus spoke again.

"Kiara, I'm not comfortable going through with a wedding while there's this much happening.""

Her eyes widened.

"Are you saying you don't want to marry me?""

"I'm saying I want to marry you. But I need to know we're starting our life together honestly.""

She swallowed.

"I didn't know about the debt.""

"I believe you.""

"Marcus, I swear.""

"I know. But we need to talk about the wedding too.""

Kiara looked at the clock.

11:38 a.m.

"Can you come upstairs?""

"I'm already downstairs.""

"What?""

"I'm in the lobby.""

The call ended.

Kiara stared at her phone.

Darius immediately stepped forward.

"You need to understand something. Marcus is getting involved in business matters that don't concern him.""

Kiara looked up.

"He is my fiancé.""

"And I'm your father.""

She gave a small, disbelieving laugh.

"You keep saying that.""

Darius's face hardened.

"Watch your mouth.""

Celeste stepped between them.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

He turned toward Celeste.

"Stay out of this.""

"No. Not anymore.""

Darius looked stunned.

Celeste continued.

"You came here promising to make things right. You told Kiara you wanted to be part of her life. But you knew about Malcolm's trust, and you knew about the debt.""

"I was trying to protect my daughter.""

"From what? The truth?""

Darius shook his head.

"You have no idea how difficult my situation has been.""

Celeste's voice trembled.

"Neither did Malcolm when he was paying for everything.""

The room went silent.

Kiara looked at her mother.

Celeste lowered her eyes.

"I should have told you.""

Kiara stood.

"Yes. You should have.""

A knock came at the door.

Marcus entered wearing his dark wedding suit, his tie loosened slightly.

He looked first at Kiara.

Then at Darius.

Then at Celeste.

"Can we talk?""

Kiara nodded.

Marcus approached her and took both her hands.

"Are you okay?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

He pulled her into a gentle embrace.

For several seconds, she simply stood there.

Then she whispered:

"I didn't know he was planning to use the money.""

"I believe you.""

Marcus looked toward Darius.

"Mr. Coleman, I want copies of every document you sent me.""

Darius scoffed.

"You have no right to demand anything.""

"Then I'll ask Vanessa to explain why you involved my future wife in your business debts.""

Darius's face tightened.

"Be careful.""

Marcus didn't move.

"I'm being careful. That's why I haven't signed anything.""

Kiara pulled away from him.

"Marcus, what do we do about the wedding?""

He looked at her.

"That's your decision. But I won't start our marriage with somebody else's debt hanging over us.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she noticed something.

Darius was reaching into his jacket.

He pulled out a folded document.

"Since everybody wants the truth, maybe we should discuss this.""

He placed it on the table.

Kiara looked down.

It was a copy of the trust agreement.

Her name appeared near the top.

But beneath it was another name.

*DARIUS COLEMAN — PROPOSED AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE.*

Kiara looked up.

"Why is your name on this?""

Darius straightened his jacket.

"Because I'm your biological father. I have certain rights.""

Marcus took the document.

He read the second page.

Then the third.

His expression changed.

"Kiara.""

"What?""

He turned the paper toward her.

"Look at the date.""

She leaned closer.

The document had been prepared six weeks earlier.

Before Darius had contacted her.

Before the wedding arrangements had been finalized.

Before he had suddenly announced that he wanted to walk her down the aisle.

Kiara stared at the date.

Then she looked at Darius.

"You didn't come back because you missed me.""

Darius opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, Marcus noticed a handwritten note attached to the last page.

He read it once.

Then again.

His voice dropped.

May you like

"Kiara, there's a reason Malcolm never told you about this trust.""

And when he turned the page over, he found Malcolm's signature beneath a statement that changed everything.
