Chapter 4: The Inheritance Nobody Was Supposed to Mention
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The woman in the gray business suit stood in the doorway, holding the envelope with both hands. She looked professional, composed, and entirely unaware that she had just dropped a bomb into a room full of people preparing for a wedding.
Kiara stared at Darius.
"Daddy, what inheritance?""
Darius's face had lost its color.
"Nothing, baby. This is a business matter.""
The woman frowned.
"Mr. Coleman, you specifically requested that I bring the documents to the hotel before the ceremony.""
Darius stepped toward her.
"Not now, Vanessa.""
Vanessa glanced at the others.
"Are you sure? You told me the signing needed to happen today.""
Malcolm slowly turned around.
"Signing?""
Darius shot him an angry look.
"Stay out of this.""
Malcolm didn't move.
"Interesting. Eighteen years, and suddenly there's an inheritance that needs to be signed before noon.""
Kiara looked between the two men.
"Somebody explain what is happening.""
Vanessa cleared her throat.
"My name is Vanessa Price. I'm an attorney representing Mr. Coleman's interests in a family estate matter.""
"Family estate?"" Kiara repeated.
Vanessa opened the envelope slightly.
"There's a property in Henrico County and an investment account established several years ago. Your name appears in the proposed beneficiary documents.""
Kiara blinked.
"My name?""
Darius quickly interrupted.
"Vanessa, I told you not to discuss the details in front of everyone.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You also told me your daughter had already agreed to the arrangement.""
Kiara stepped backward.
"What arrangement?""
Darius rubbed his forehead.
"Baby, it's complicated.""
"No. It's actually very simple. You just told me you wanted to be my father again.
Now there's an inheritance with my name on it. What arrangement?""
Celeste moved closer to her daughter.
"Kiara, let's take a breath.""
Kiara turned toward her mother.
"Did you know about this?""
Celeste hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than any confession could have.
Malcolm watched his wife carefully.
"Celeste?""
She looked at him.
"Don't.""
"Don't what?""
"Don't turn this into another argument.""
Malcolm nodded.
"Of course. We wouldn't want the truth interrupting the wedding.""
Darius snatched the envelope from Vanessa.
"I'll explain everything privately.""
Vanessa immediately reached for it.
"Please don't remove the documents. There are originals in there.""
He reluctantly handed it back.
Kiara looked at Vanessa.
"Can you tell me what this is about?""
Vanessa studied Darius before answering.
"Your father contacted me approximately two months ago. He wanted to establish a financial arrangement involving a property and certain investment assets.""
"Two months?""
"Yes.""
Kiara's expression changed.
"You contacted an attorney two months ago?""
Darius nodded.
"I was trying to make things right.""
"Then why didn't you call me?""
"I wanted to surprise you.""
Malcolm almost laughed.
A surprise inheritance.
An unexpected reunion.
A sudden appearance at a wedding where somebody else had already paid nearly sixty thousand dollars.
It was beginning to sound less like fatherhood and more like a carefully scheduled business transaction.
Vanessa continued.
"There are some conditions attached to the proposed arrangement. That's why I wanted to review the documents before anything was signed.""
"What conditions?"" Kiara asked.
Darius stepped forward.
"Vanessa, that's enough.""
But Kiara raised her hand.
"No. I want to know.""
Vanessa opened the envelope and removed a few pages.
"The proposed transfer involves a commercial property that Mr. Coleman says he partially owns through an investment company. There are also documents relating to an account that he wants you to receive.""
Kiara frowned.
"Why would I need to sign anything?""
"Because some of the proposed documents concern the transfer of ownership and the acceptance of certain financial obligations.""
Malcolm's expression sharpened.
"Obligations?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Potential liabilities associated with the property.""
Darius stepped between them.
"That's normal paperwork.""
Vanessa didn't look convinced.
"Not necessarily.""
Celeste's face had become noticeably pale.
Malcolm noticed.
He had spent twenty years learning the small changes in his wife's expressions.
He knew when she was frightened.
He knew when she was angry.
And he knew when she was hiding something.
He turned toward her.
"How much do you know about this?""
Celeste shook her head.
"Nothing.""
"Then why do you look like you've just heard something you were hoping nobody would mention?""
"Malcolm, please.""
Kiara looked at her mother.
"Mom?""
Celeste took a breath.
"Darius told me he wanted to leave something for you. That's all.""
"Since when?""
"Recently.""
"How recently?""
Celeste looked down.
Darius interrupted.
"Can we stop interrogating everybody? It's my daughter's wedding day.""
Malcolm looked at him.
"Then perhaps you should have arrived with a wedding gift instead of paperwork.""
Darius clenched his jaw.
"I came here because I love my daughter.""
"Then tell her the truth.""
Darius turned toward Kiara.
"Baby, I made mistakes when you were young. I know that. But I want a relationship with you now.""
Kiara's eyes filled.
"Then why does everything have to involve signing papers?""
He reached for her hand.
"Because I want to give you something your stepfather never could.""
Malcolm didn't react.
But Kiara pulled her hand away.
"Don't compare him to yourself.""
Darius blinked.
"What?""
"Don't. He raised me.""
The room went quiet.
For the first time that morning, Kiara had defended Malcolm.
But the moment didn't last.
She looked at Vanessa.
"I want copies of everything. I'm not signing anything today.""
Vanessa nodded.
"That's a wise decision.""
Darius's face hardened.
"Kiara, you're making this bigger than it needs to be.""
She looked directly at him.
"You made it bigger when you brought an attorney to my wedding.""
Vanessa gathered the documents.
"I'll leave the envelope with you, Mr. Coleman, but I recommend that your daughter obtain independent legal advice before agreeing to anything.""
Darius looked furious.
"Fine.""
Vanessa turned toward Kiara.
"Congratulations on your wedding.""
Then she left.
The door closed.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Finally, Celeste spoke.
"Let's get ready. The ceremony is in less than an hour.""
Malcolm looked at her.
"You're still thinking about the ceremony?""
"What else am I supposed to think about?""
He glanced at the flower box.
Then at the unsigned wedding estimate.
"Perhaps the people standing beside you.""
Celeste's eyes narrowed.
"Malcolm, don't walk away from this family.""
He looked at her.
"Which family?""
She had no answer.
And as he reached for the door, Kiara's phone began ringing.
The name on the screen wasn't Darius.
It was the wedding coordinator.
Kiara answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through, loud enough for Malcolm to hear.
"Miss Johnson, I need confirmation immediately. The hotel has placed your ballroom setup on hold.""
Kiara looked at the estimate.
Then at Darius.
Then at Malcolm.
May you like
And for the first time that morning, she realized the inheritance wasn't going to save her wedding.
Not unless somebody else was willing to pay first.
