Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Before Everyone Else

Tiana read the email again.

Then a third time.

Cora.

Her mother.

The woman who had protected Zion that morning.

The woman who had helped her search the storage room.

The woman who had held her hand at Marcus's grave.

How could Cora have introduced Curtis to Marcus?

Tiana slowly climbed out of bed.

Zion was sleeping peacefully beside her, his little hand resting on Marcus's photograph.

She covered him with the blanket and walked downstairs.

Cora was sitting in the kitchen.

A cup of tea rested between her hands.

She looked up.

“Couldn't sleep?””

Tiana placed her phone on the table.

“Mom, we need to talk.””

Cora glanced at the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What happened?””

“Do you know Curtis from before I met him?””

Cora didn't answer immediately.

Tiana pulled out a chair.

“Did you introduce him to Marcus?””

Cora closed her eyes.

“Oh, Tiana.””

“Please don't tell me you don't understand the question.””

Cora placed her cup down.

“Yes.””

The word landed like a stone.

Tiana stared at her mother.

“Why?””

“Because I thought he was a good man.””

“You knew Marcus?””

“Of course I knew Marcus.””

“Then why did you introduce them?””

Cora looked down at her hands.

“Curtis was doing maintenance work for a property management company. He came to the church where I volunteered. He was polite, hardworking, and always offering to help.””

Tiana shook her head.

“That doesn't explain why you introduced him to Marcus.””

“Marcus was looking for someone to help with a small renovation project. I mentioned Curtis because I thought they might work well together.””

“And the money?””

Cora's eyes filled.

“I didn't know anything about the money.””

Tiana leaned forward.

“Did Marcus ever tell you Curtis had cheated him?””

“No.””

“Did you know Curtis was involved in some kind of financial arrangement with him?””

Cora shook her head.

“Not until much later.””

“When?””

Cora took a deep breath.

“After Marcus died.””

Tiana went still.

“What?””

Cora wiped her eyes.

“A few months after the funeral, Curtis came to my house. He told me he had known Marcus through business and that he wanted to help you.””

“Help me how?””

“He said he could take some of the financial pressure off you. He said he wanted to be a father figure to Zion.””

Tiana stared at her mother.

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted you to be happy.””

“You introduced him to me?””

Cora nodded.

Tiana stood.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, “You introduced the man who stole from Marcus into my life?””

Cora began crying.

“I didn't know he had stolen anything.””

“But you knew there was a connection.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

Cora lowered her head.

“I thought it was better not to reopen old wounds.””

Tiana laughed bitterly.

“Old wounds? Mom, he was walking into my house every day. He was sleeping beside me.

He was raising my child. And you knew he had a history with Marcus.””

“I didn't know how serious it was.””

“You could have told me!””

“I was afraid you'd reject him.””

Tiana stared at her mother.

“You were afraid I'd reject him?””

Cora nodded.

“I saw how lonely you were. You were working nights, raising Zion alone, and trying to keep everything together. Curtis seemed like a blessing.””

Tiana's eyes filled.

“Mom, I wasn't asking you to find me a husband. I needed you to help me protect my son.””

Cora covered her face.

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

Tiana picked up her phone.

She scrolled to Elaine's email and showed her mother the final paragraph.

Cora read it.

Then she whispered, “Oh, Lord.””

Tiana looked at her.

“What else do you know?””

Cora shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“Mom.””

“I swear.””

Tiana sat down again.

“Did Curtis ever give you anything to keep?””

Cora hesitated.

It was brief.

But Tiana noticed.

“What?””

Cora looked toward the hallway.

Then she stood and walked to her handbag.

She removed a small envelope.

“I should have told you about this.””

Tiana took it.

Inside was a folded document.

It was a copy of a letter addressed to Cora.

The handwriting belonged to Curtis.

If Tiana asks about Marcus's financial records, tell her everything was settled before his death. There is no reason to upset her.

Tiana read it twice.

At the bottom was another sentence.

You owe me for everything I've done for your daughter.

Tiana looked up.

“What does he mean?””

Cora began shaking.

“He gave me money.””

Tiana went completely still.

“How much?””

“Three thousand dollars.””

“Why?””

“He said it was to help with the house repairs.””

“And you accepted it?””

Cora nodded.

“I was behind on some bills. I thought it was a loan.””

Tiana placed the letter on the table.

“Did you pay him back?””

“I tried.””

“Did he ask for it?””

“He told me not to worry about it.””

Tiana looked at the final sentence again.

You owe me for everything I've done for your daughter.

Her stomach turned.

Curtis had used the money to make her mother feel indebted to him.

And her mother had kept quiet because she was afraid of losing his support.

Tiana stood.

“I need some air.””

She walked outside.

The morning air was cold against her face.

She called Elaine Porter.

The attorney answered on the second ring.

“Ms. Brooks?””

“This is Tiana. I received your email.””

“Thank you for calling. I've been trying to reach you.””

“I need to know exactly what happened to my son's inheritance.””

Elaine paused.

“According to our records, Curtis submitted two requests for information about the account. One was made under the pretense of being your authorized spouse.””

“He wasn't authorized.””

“I know. We rejected the request.””

Tiana gripped the phone.

“Did he withdraw anything?””

“We're still investigating. There was an attempted transfer from an account connected to the original trust arrangement.””

“Attempted?””

“Yes. Fortunately, the transaction was flagged.””

Tiana closed her eyes.

“Why are you contacting me now?””

“Because I received a letter yesterday from someone claiming to represent your husband. He asked for a complete statement of the trust's assets.””

“Who?””

“An attorney named Michael Reeves.””

Tiana didn't recognize the name.

“Did you send him anything?””

“No. He provided no valid authorization.””

Elaine paused.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“Marcus left specific instructions that Zion's inheritance should be protected if anyone attempted to gain control of it through marriage, guardianship, or another personal relationship.””

Tiana felt her throat tighten.

“He expected something like this?””

“I don't know what he suspected. But he was very specific.””

Elaine continued.

“Marcus also named an alternate trustee.””

“Who?””

“Darius.””

Tiana looked toward the window.

Darius had been trying to protect Zion all along.

“Can we meet?””

“Tomorrow morning. Bring every document you have.””

After ending the call, Tiana went back inside.

Cora was standing in the kitchen.

“I'm sorry,” her mother whispered.

Tiana looked at her.

“I believe you didn't know everything Curtis was doing.””

Cora nodded.

“But you knew enough to ask questions.””

“I know.””

“And from now on, nobody gets to decide what Zion should know except the people legally responsible for protecting him.””

Cora wiped her cheeks.

“I understand.””

At that moment, Zion appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Mommy?””

Tiana looked up.

“Good morning, sweetheart.””

“Can Grandma still come to my school picture day?””

Tiana's heart softened.

“Of course.””

Zion came downstairs.

He was wearing Marcus's old basketball jersey.

The sleeves were slightly too long.

Cora smiled through her tears.

“You look just like your daddy.””

Zion touched the short curls on his head.

“Do you think my hair will grow back before Christmas?””

Tiana knelt.

“It might take a little longer, but it's growing already.””

“Will it look like Daddy's again?””

She kissed his forehead.

“Yes, baby.””

Zion smiled.

Then he asked something unexpected.

“Can we invite Darius to my picture day too?””

Tiana looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he knew Daddy.””

Tiana felt tears gathering again.

“Of course we can.””

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Elaine.

*I have identified the attorney who contacted me. He is not representing Curtis. He is representing someone else connected to Marcus's estate. Please be careful.*

Tiana typed a response.

*Who is he representing?*

The answer came seconds later.

*Marcus's former business partner.*

Tiana stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

*His name is Curtis Reed.*

She read it again.

It was impossible.

Curtis was already her husband.

Why would another lawyer represent him in a separate legal matter?

She called Elaine.

“I'm confused. You just said the attorney represents Curtis.””

Elaine answered quietly.

“No, Ms. Brooks. I said he represents Curtis Reed.””

Tiana frowned.

“That's my husband's name.””

“I understand. But the Curtis Reed listed in Marcus's financial records is forty-one years old and has a different date of birth.””

Tiana stopped breathing.

Elaine continued.

“Your husband's identity information doesn't match the person Marcus originally did business with.””

Tiana looked toward the staircase.

May you like

Curtis had built his life around a name she thought she knew.

And now she was beginning to wonder who she had actually married.
