Chapter 6: The Voice From Beyond the Grave

Curtis placed his glass on the counter.

It hit the surface harder than he intended.

“Where did you get that file?””

Tiana didn't answer.

She pressed play again.

Marcus's voice filled the kitchen.

“Hey, little man. If you're hearing this, I hope you're old enough to understand how much I love you…”

Curtis reached for the tablet.

Tiana pulled it away.

“Don't.””

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“That's private.””

Tiana stared at him.

“It's a recording from my son's father. It was made for my son. What exactly makes you think you have the right to decide whether he hears it?””

Curtis rubbed his face.

“You don't know the circumstances.””

“Then explain them.””

He looked toward the stairs.

“Not here.””

“Why? Afraid Zion will hear the truth?””

Curtis's expression hardened.

“Keep your voice down.””

Tiana laughed in disbelief.

“You've spent months telling my child to stop talking about his father. You've thrown away his belongings. You've hidden a recording meant for him. And now you want me to whisper?””

Curtis walked toward the hallway.

“I'm going out.””

“Sit down.””

“I don't take orders from you.””

“Then don't expect me to keep protecting you.””

He stopped.

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Then Curtis grabbed his keys and left.

Tiana watched his truck disappear.

She immediately called the number that had sent her the messages.

It rang twice.

A man answered.

“Hello?””

“Who is this?””

There was a pause.

“Tiana?””

She recognized the voice.

“Darius?””

“Yes.””

Tiana sat down.

“Did you send me those messages?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me directly?””

“I tried. Curtis blocked my number.””

Tiana closed her eyes.

“What happened to Marcus's recording?””

Darius sighed.

“I've been trying to get it to Zion for years.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus asked me to.””

Tiana's voice trembled.

“What did he say?””

“I don't want to explain something I haven't heard in full myself. But I know he recorded it during his final weeks.””

Tiana looked at the tablet.

“Curtis has it.””

“I know.””

“He only left thirty-two seconds.””

“That's not the whole file.””

“Where's the rest?””

“I believe he has it on a flash drive. Marcus gave me a copy before he died, but I misplaced mine during a move. Curtis contacted me three weeks ago asking about it.””

“Why would he contact you?””

“Because I told him about the recording when you two started dating.””

Tiana felt sick.

“You told him?””

“I thought he deserved to know that Marcus had left something for Zion. I thought he'd understand.””

Darius paused.

“I was wrong.””

Tiana looked toward the staircase.

“Darius, I need you to tell me everything.””

He took a breath.

“Marcus and I were working on a small construction project together. He was also putting money aside for Zion's future. Before he passed, he created a savings account and left instructions with an attorney.””

Tiana frowned.

“What savings account?””

“One for Zion. It wasn't a fortune, but Marcus wanted his son to have something when he turned eighteen.””

Tiana remembered Marcus mentioning something similar.

She had assumed the account had been handled after his death.

“Why didn't I know about it?””

“Because Marcus asked me to let you handle the legal paperwork first. He didn't want you worrying about money while you were grieving.””

Tiana looked down at the floor.

“And Curtis knows about this?””

“He knows about the recording. I don't know how much he knows about the account.””

Tiana went quiet.

Then she asked:

“Why did Curtis pick up the package three weeks ago?””

Darius hesitated.

“He told me he wanted to make sure the recording wouldn't upset Zion.””

Tiana almost laughed.

“He shaved my son's head because it reminded him of Marcus.””

“I know.””

“He hid his father's things.””

“I know.””

“He told him he wasn't coming back.””

Darius was silent.

Then he said something that made Tiana grip the phone.

“There's something else. Marcus told me he was worried about the kind of man who might eventually enter your life.””

Tiana frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“I don't know. But he asked me to promise that if Zion ever seemed afraid in his own home, I would pay attention.””

Tiana looked toward the stairs.

Her son had been afraid for months.

And she had mistaken his silence for adjustment.

“Darius, can you come over tomorrow?””

“I can be there this evening.””

“Please do.””

After ending the call, Tiana went upstairs.

Zion was sitting on his bed, drawing in a notebook.

He had drawn three people.

Himself.

His mother.

And Marcus.

The drawing showed Marcus standing behind him with one hand resting on his shoulder.

“That's beautiful,” Tiana said.

Zion looked up.

“It's for Daddy.””

She sat beside him.

“Baby, I found something.””

“What?””

“A recording your daddy made before he died.””

Zion's pencil stopped.

“Of his voice?””

“Yes.””

“Can I hear it?””

Tiana nodded.

“But there's something I want you to understand first. Whatever Daddy says, nothing can change how much he loved you.””

Zion looked confused.

“Why would something change it?””

“It won't. I promise.””

She sat beside him and played the first thirty-two seconds.

Marcus's voice filled the bedroom.

“Hey, little man…”

Zion's eyes widened.

He stopped breathing for a moment.

“Daddy?””

Tiana placed an arm around him.

“It's Daddy, sweetheart.””

The recording continued.

“I hope you're old enough to understand how much I love you…”

Zion began smiling.

A tear slipped down his cheek.

Then the audio stopped.

He looked at the tablet.

“Why did it stop?””

Tiana swallowed.

“That's all we have right now.””

“Can we hear more?””

“I'm trying to find the rest.””

Zion touched the screen.

“Daddy knew I would listen?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know I would miss him?””

Tiana pulled him close.

“I think he knew.””

The boy leaned against her.

“I miss his voice.””

“I know, baby.””

“Can we play it again?””

She pressed play.

They listened together.

Three times.

Each time, Zion smiled at the beginning.

Each time, he cried when the recording ended.

That evening, Cora prepared dinner while Tiana searched the tablet for more files.

At 7:15, someone knocked.

Darius stood outside holding a small brown envelope.

He was in his early forties, wearing a dark jacket and carrying a laptop bag.

“Tiana.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Darius looked toward the staircase.

“How's Zion?””

“Confused. Hurt. But he's okay.””

Darius nodded.

He placed the envelope on the dining table.

“I found something in my storage unit.””

Tiana opened it.

Inside was a small photograph of Marcus, a handwritten note, and a tiny USB flash drive.

Her hands began shaking.

“Is this the recording?””

“I think so.””

Darius pulled out his laptop.

“Marcus gave me this shortly before he died. I thought I'd lost it. I found it while looking through an old box yesterday.””

Tiana sat down.

“Play it.””

Darius connected the flash drive.

A folder appeared.

There were four audio files.

The first was labeled *ZION — AGE 5*.

The second was labeled *ZION — AGE 10*.

The third was labeled *ZION — AGE 18*.

And the fourth had no age.

It was simply named:

*THE TRUTH.*

Darius stared at the screen.

Tiana felt her heart begin to pound.

“Play the first one.””

He clicked the file.

Marcus's voice emerged, warm and unmistakable.

“Hey, my little man. If you're five years old, that means you've probably started asking a million questions…”

Tiana smiled through her tears.

Then Darius clicked the second file.

“Hey, Zion. If you're ten now, I hope you're still laughing that big laugh your mother loves…”

The recording continued for nearly a minute.

Then Darius opened the fourth file.

The screen showed a recording lasting eleven minutes and forty-two seconds.

Tiana looked at him.

“That's the one Curtis cut.””

Darius nodded.

He pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Tiana, if you're listening to this, I hope life has been kind to you. I hope you've found someone who treats our boy with the love he deserves.””

Tiana covered her mouth.

Marcus continued.

“But there's something I need to explain. Before I got sick, I discovered something about a man who was spending time around our family…”

Darius slowly turned toward Tiana.

The voice continued.

“I don't want you to think I'm asking you to spend your life alone. You're allowed to love again. You're allowed to be happy. But please, if this man ever enters Zion's life, make sure you know the truth about him.””

Tiana's heart pounded.

Marcus took a breath.

“His name is Curtis.””

The room went silent.

Tiana stared at Darius.

“What?””

Darius didn't move.

On the laptop, Marcus continued speaking.

“I met him through a business arrangement. He was a different person when he thought nobody was watching. I discovered that he had been using someone else's identity to obtain money…”

Tiana felt the blood drain from her face.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“And if he ever tells you he became a good man after meeting you, please don't believe him until you check what happened to the money I left for our son.””

Darius stopped the recording.

Tiana looked at him.

“Why did you stop it?””

He pointed at the laptop.

A notification had appeared.

*File access interrupted.*

Then the screen went black.

Someone had remotely disconnected the flash drive.

Tiana stood.

“Who did that?””

Darius looked toward the front door.

A shadow moved behind the glass.

Then three hard knocks echoed through the house.

Curtis's voice came from outside.

“Tiana. Open the door.””

She looked at Darius.

He whispered:

“Don't let him know we found the recording.””

But Curtis knocked again.

And this time, he shouted:

“I KNOW YOU'RE LISTENING TO MARCUS!””
