Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Gala

Jalen caught up with Maya just beyond the ballroom doors.

“Maya, please wait.””

She stood near a tall window overlooking the Atlanta skyline, one hand pressed against the cool glass. The city lights shimmered below, beautiful and distant, while the muffled sounds of the gala continued behind the closed doors.

She did not turn immediately.

Jalen stopped several feet away, breathing hard. He had never been so afraid of a silence between them. Arguments could be answered.

Accusations could be challenged. But the quiet distance in Maya’s posture made him feel as though he had arrived at a door that might never open again.

“I don't want you driving home upset,” he said.

Maya let out a short, disbelieving breath.

“That's what you're worried about?””

“No. That's not what I meant.””

“Then tell me what you meant, Jalen.””

He rubbed a hand over his face.

“I meant that I care about you. I know I handled tonight badly. I know I have no right to ask you to stay when I haven't given you a reason to believe things will change. But I can't just watch you walk away without trying to make this right.””

She finally faced him.

“Make what right? The argument? Your mother's behavior? Our relationship?””

“All of it.””

“You can't fix all of it with one apology.””

“I know.””

“Do you?”” Her voice trembled despite her effort to control it.

“Because I've heard you say those words before. You apologize, you promise to speak to her, and then the next time she makes some cruel comment, I'm expected to understand that she's your mother. I'm expected to be the bigger person. I'm expected to keep the peace.””

Jalen lowered his eyes.

“I never should have put that on you.””

“But you did.””

“Yes.””

The answer came without defense, and it unsettled her more than another excuse might have.

Maya looked down at the ring enclosed in her palm.

“I didn't want to embarrass you tonight.””

“You didn't.””

“I didn't want to make a scene at a charity gala. I didn't want your family to think I was trying to challenge them. I came here because I wanted to stand beside the man I love.””

“You did nothing wrong.””

“Then why did I feel like I was standing trial?””

Jalen had no answer.

A security guard passed at the far end of the corridor, glanced at them, and continued toward the elevators. Somewhere inside the ballroom, the orchestra resumed playing, the music faint and almost absurdly cheerful.

Jalen took a careful breath.

“There is something I need to tell you.””

Maya watched him.

“What?””

“My mother has been making plans for our wedding without consulting us.””

Her expression hardened.

“What kind of plans?””

“Guest lists. Venues. The people she wants involved. She even spoke to a wedding planner last week.””

Maya stared at him.

“You told me she had offered to help.””

“She did. At first, I thought she was trying to be supportive. Then I found out she had been discussing a completely different venue with the planner.””

“Without telling me?””

“Without telling either of us.””

Maya turned back toward the window.

“How long have you known?””

“Three days.””

She closed her eyes.

Three days.

For three days, he had carried that information while she had continued discussing flowers, invitations, and the possibility of holding their ceremony in a garden. She had thought they were building a future together. He had known his mother was trying to take control of it and had waited to decide how to respond.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I wanted to handle it before it became another fight.””

Maya turned sharply.

“That is exactly the problem.””

“I know.””

“No, Jalen. You don't get to make decisions about what I can handle. You don't get to keep me in the dark because you're afraid of upsetting your mother.

If we are going to be married, I need to know when something threatens our relationship. I need a partner, not a man who tries to manage the damage after everyone else has already made a mess.””

He nodded slowly.

“You're right.””

She searched his face, looking for the familiar signs of defensiveness. They were absent, replaced by an exhaustion that seemed to reach deeper than tonight.

“I thought I was protecting our future,” he said.

“You were protecting yourself from a difficult conversation.””

He flinched.

“Yes.””

The admission left them both quiet.

Then Maya's phone vibrated inside her clutch.

She looked down.

A message had arrived from Denise Carter, the event coordinator.

*Maya, I hope you're all right. Please don't leave without speaking to me. There is something about tonight's gala that I believe you should know.*

Maya read the message twice.

Jalen noticed the change in her expression.

“What is it?””

“Denise wants to speak with me.””

“About what?””

“I don't know.””

She typed a brief reply. Denise responded almost immediately, asking whether Maya could meet her in the small conference room beside the hotel's administrative offices.

Maya slipped her phone away.

“I need to speak to her.””

“I'll come with you.””

“No.””

The word was not angry. That made it more difficult to challenge.

Jalen looked at her.

“Maya, if this is about my mother—”

“Then I need to hear it without you trying to protect me from whatever she did.””

He stepped back.

“All right.””

She studied him for a moment.

“You can wait here if you want. But don't follow me.””

Jalen nodded.

Maya walked toward the conference room, her fingers closed around the engagement ring. She did not know what Denise wanted to tell her, but something in the woman's message suggested that the confrontation in the ballroom had exposed more than Rochelle's contempt.

It had exposed a secret.

Inside the conference room, Denise stood beside a table covered with folders and printed schedules. She was in her early forties, professionally composed, with a headset resting around her neck and a tablet in her hand.

When Maya entered, Denise closed the door.

“Thank you for coming.””

“What is this about?””

Denise hesitated.

“First, I want you to know that what happened in that ballroom was unacceptable. I was across the room when Mrs. Whitmore struck your hand away. I should have intervened.””

“You were working.””

“That doesn't excuse it.””

Maya appreciated the sincerity, but she had not come to receive sympathy.

“What did you want to tell me?””

Denise placed the tablet on the table.

“The gala's final payment.””

Maya felt her heartbeat change.

“What about it?””

“Mrs. Whitmore has repeatedly told guests that the Whitmore family covered the entire cost of tonight's event. But the original sponsorship was arranged through a different account.””

“Whose account?””

Denise turned the tablet toward her.

On the screen was a summary of the gala's financial arrangements. Several vendor payments were listed alongside the name of a corporate foundation. Beneath that was a confirmation for the remaining balance, paid in full several days earlier.

Maya recognized the name.

Bennett Community Holdings.

For a moment, she could not speak.

Her family's investment company had operated quietly for years, supporting community projects, local businesses, and charitable organizations. Her father had built it with the intention of funding meaningful work without demanding public recognition.

Maya herself had overseen several of its philanthropic partnerships since joining the family business.

But she had not known that her father's foundation had agreed to underwrite the Whitmore gala.

“Who authorized this?”” she asked.

“The Bennett Community Foundation, working through the event's designated charitable sponsor. Your family's office approved the underwriting arrangement months ago. The Whitmore Foundation was listed as the host organization.””

Maya stared at the screen.

“Was Rochelle told?””

“According to the correspondence, she was informed that a principal sponsor would cover the event's major expenses. I can't say whether she understood the sponsor's identity.””

Denise opened another document.

“The initial agreement covered the ballroom, catering, entertainment, floral arrangements, and security. There were additional expenses, too. Your family's contribution was the largest.””

Maya felt a strange mixture of disbelief and sadness.

She had not come to the gala intending to expose anyone. She had not even known the financial arrangements were connected to her family's organization.

Her father had simply believed in the foundation's charitable mission.

And Rochelle had used that very event to humiliate his daughter.

“Does anyone else know?”” Maya asked.

“The finance director knows. The hotel's accounts team knows. And Mrs. Whitmore received the sponsorship summary.””

“Can you show me the original correspondence?””

Denise nodded.

“I can provide the event records that fall within my responsibilities. I thought you deserved to know before anyone else tried to turn this into a story about your motives.””

Maya looked at the payment confirmation again.

She could already imagine Rochelle's face if the truth became public.

But revenge was not what Maya wanted.

She wanted honesty.

She wanted to know whether Jalen's mother had deliberately concealed the sponsor's identity or whether her pride had prevented her from understanding the arrangement.

Most of all, she wanted to know whether the woman who had accused Maya of chasing wealth could recognize the truth when it was placed directly in front of her.

Maya straightened.

“Please send me copies of the documents.””

“I will.””

“And Denise?””

“Yes?””

“Don't announce anything. Don't confront Rochelle on my behalf. I want the records preserved, and I want the facts established before anyone makes accusations.””

Denise nodded.

“Understood.””

Maya left the conference room with the information weighing heavily in her mind.

At the end of the corridor, Jalen was still waiting.

He rose when he saw her.

“What happened?””

Maya looked at the man she loved, then at the closed ballroom doors behind him.

“Your mother was wrong about who paid for tonight.””

Jalen's face tightened.

“What do you mean?””

She opened her hand, revealing the engagement ring.

“My family's foundation covered the gala's major expenses.””

He stared at her.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Jalen whispered, “Does my mother know?””

May you like

Maya looked toward the ballroom.

“That's what we need to find out.””
