Chapter 3: The Cost of Being Chosen
“Maya, please.””
Jalen reached for her hand as she turned away from Rochelle.
She stopped, but she did not let him take it.
For several seconds, the ballroom seemed to exist outside the ordinary rules of time. The music had not resumed. Conversations remained suspended at the edges of the gathering. Every movement—from a waiter adjusting a tray to a guest setting down a champagne flute—felt amplified by the silence.
Jalen lowered his voice.
“Can we step somewhere private? Just the two of us?””
Maya studied his face.
She saw the man she loved. She saw the fear in his eyes, the desperate hope that he could still repair what had happened. And she saw the familiar exhaustion of someone caught between the woman he intended to marry and the mother who had spent years making that choice feel like betrayal.
“I don't know what there is left to discuss in private,” she said.
“There is us.””
The words reached her.
He stepped closer, careful not to crowd her.
“I know I haven't handled everything the way I should have. I know I've asked you to be patient too many times. But I love you, Maya.
I want to marry you. Nothing my mother says changes that.””
“Then why does she still believe she can treat me like this?””
Jalen looked down briefly.
“Because I've spent too long trying to keep everyone happy.””
“And how has that worked?””
He flinched.
She had not raised her voice. She did not need to.
“All it has done,” Maya continued, “is teach your mother that if she humiliates me badly enough, you'll argue with her afterward and ask me to forgive her.””
“That isn't what I want.””
“I know. But it is what has happened.””
Jalen looked toward Rochelle. His mother was standing rigidly beside Corinne, speaking in a furious whisper. Corinne glanced at Maya, then quickly turned away when she realized she had been noticed.
“I'll deal with her,” Jalen promised.
“Tonight. I swear to you.””
Maya's eyes glistened, though no tears fell.
“You've promised that before.””
“This time is different.””
“Because she did it in front of witnesses?””
“Because I finally understand what it's costing you.””
Maya looked at him for a long moment.
“Do you?””
He reached for her hand again, then stopped before touching her.
“Tell me what you need me to do.””
The question was sincere. That made it harder.
She could have asked him to defend her. He already had.
She could have demanded an apology from Rochelle. Even if one came, Maya doubted it would survive the next disagreement.
She could have asked Jalen to choose her, but she was beginning to understand that a marriage built around repeated demands for loyalty would leave them both exhausted.
“I need to know that I won't spend the rest of my life being punished because your mother doesn't approve of me,” she said.
“I need to know that you won't expect me to smile through it just because she is your mother.””
“You won't.””
“How can you promise that?””
“Because I'll set boundaries.””
“You should have done that before she struck my hand.””
His face tightened.
“You're right.””
The admission surprised her. Jalen had always been willing to apologize, but he had often followed the apology with an explanation of his mother's behavior. This time, he offered no excuse.
“I should have stopped this a long time ago,” he said.
“I kept thinking that if I gave her enough time, she would accept you. I thought if I stayed calm, she would eventually realize how serious I was.””
Maya swallowed.
“And now?””
“Now I know I can't make you keep paying for my inability to confront her.””
For a moment, she nearly reached for him.
Then Rochelle's voice cut through the ballroom.
“Jalen!””
He closed his eyes briefly.
Maya watched him turn toward the sound.
Rochelle was standing beside one of the tall floral arrangements, her expression composed but strained. She had apparently decided that the confrontation had lasted long enough and expected her son to return to his customary role.
“Come here,” she called.
Jalen did not move.
“Jalen, I need to speak with you.””
“Then speak,” he replied.
Rochelle stared at him.
“Not in front of everyone.””
“You had no problem speaking about Maya in front of everyone.””
A few guests suddenly became very interested in the conversation.
Rochelle's face reddened.
“This is a family matter.””
“You made it a public spectacle.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Stop saying that.””
The force of his response startled her.
Jalen stepped away from Maya, though he kept his body angled toward her, as if he wanted to make certain she understood he was not abandoning her.
“You embarrassed my fiancée,” he said.
“You insulted her background, questioned her motives, and struck her hand away as if she were someone you could physically dismiss. Then you stood here and told everyone that our relationship was beneath you.””
“I never said that.””
“You called her a woman who attached herself to our family.””
“Because I have legitimate concerns!””
“Then you could have spoken to me privately. You could have asked questions. You could have tried to understand the person I love. Instead, you chose to humiliate her.””
Rochelle's mouth tightened.
“You are making me sound like some terrible person.””
“No, Mother. I'm telling you what you did.””
Her eyes widened.
For the first time, Jalen's anger did not seem like a passing flare that could be extinguished with a softer voice or an appeal to family loyalty. It was controlled, deliberate, and unmistakably directed at her.
Corinne moved closer.
“Jalen, this is enough. Aunt Rochelle has done more for you than anyone else in this room.””
He turned toward her.
“And that gives you both the right to mistreat my fiancée?””
“No one mistreated her,” Corinne protested.
“We had a disagreement.””
“You laughed at her while my mother insulted her.””
“I was trying to lighten the mood.””
“You were enjoying yourself.””
Corinne's face hardened.
“You're really going to speak to your own family like this over a woman you haven't even married yet?””
Jalen's expression became cold.
“Do not call her just a woman. She is the person I intend to marry. And if you cannot respect her, you do not have to be part of our lives.””
Corinne stared at him, stunned into silence.
Rochelle stepped forward.
“You cannot mean that.””
“I do.””
“You would throw away your family for her?””
Jalen shook his head.
“No. I'm refusing to throw away the woman I love to satisfy your need to control every decision I make.””
The words landed with devastating clarity.
Rochelle looked at him as if she had never truly seen him before. Her son had always been respectful, dependable, and willing to hear her out. She had interpreted those qualities as permission to guide his life indefinitely.
Now he stood before her, no longer asking for permission.
“You're being cruel,” she whispered.
Jalen's anger sharpened.
“Cruel? You want to talk about cruelty? Look at what you did to Maya tonight.
Look at her face. She came here to stand beside me, and you made her defend her right to be treated like a human being.””
Rochelle glanced toward Maya.
Maya stood a short distance away, her shoulders straight, her expression unreadable. She was not smiling in triumph. She was not encouraging Jalen to continue. She simply watched, and somehow that restraint made Rochelle's position feel even more exposed.
“You owe her an apology,” Jalen said.
Rochelle drew herself up.
“I will not be ordered around in my own family.””
“Then don't expect me to pretend this was acceptable.””
“After everything I've done for you?””
“Being my mother does not give you unlimited permission to hurt people.””
Rochelle's lips parted.
No words came.
Jalen looked back at Maya.
“Please,” he said, his voice softening.
“Don't leave like this. Give me a chance to make things right.””
Maya's heart ached at the sound of his voice.
She wanted to believe that tonight would change everything. She wanted to believe that the man standing before her would carry this same courage into the private moments that mattered most, when there were no guests watching and no immediate consequences to frighten his mother into silence.
But she had learned that public declarations were easier than lasting boundaries.
She looked at the ring on her finger.
Jalen followed her gaze.
“Maya?””
She slowly slipped the ring from her finger, then closed her hand around it.
He went pale.
“What are you doing?””
She held his eyes.
“I'm trying to understand whether loving you means accepting a life where your mother can humiliate me whenever she wants.””
“No. It doesn't.””
“Then I need more than another promise.””
“I'll prove it to you.””
She looked toward Rochelle. The older woman had gone strangely still, her hands clenched around the stem of her champagne glass.
For all her confidence, Rochelle seemed unable to comprehend the possibility that her actions might cost her something she had always assumed would remain hers: her son's unquestioning loyalty.
Maya turned back to Jalen.
“I love you,” she said.
His face softened with desperate hope.
“Then stay. Please. Let's leave together. We can talk about everything tomorrow.””
Maya shook her head.
“That's the problem, Jalen. Tomorrow has been carrying too much of what should have changed yesterday.””
He reached toward her, then stopped when he saw her expression.
She took one slow breath.
“Maybe I need to rethink the two of us.””
The words were quiet, but they seemed to strike him with more force than Rochelle's shouting had struck the room.
“Maya, no.””
She turned away.
He followed her for two steps.
“Please, just give me a chance. I love you. I don't want to lose you because of what she did.””
Maya stopped near the ballroom doors but did not look back.
“This isn't only about what she did tonight,” she said.
“It's about how long I've been waiting for you to make sure it doesn't happen again.””
Then she walked out.
Jalen stood motionless for one terrible second before starting after her.
“Maya!””
The doors swung shut behind her.
He hurried toward them, but not before turning back to his mother.
His face had changed. The hurt was still there, but beneath it burned a fury Rochelle had never seen directed at her with such absolute clarity.
“Look at what you've done,” he said.
Rochelle stared at him.
“Jalen, I—”
“No. You don't get to explain this away. You don't get to call it protection or concern or some lesson you thought she needed to learn. You humiliated the woman I'm supposed to marry, and you may have just destroyed the future I wanted with her.””
Rochelle's lips trembled.
“I never intended—”
“You never intended to lose control. That's what this is about, isn't it? You thought I would always clean up after you. You thought Maya would always forgive you because I asked her to.””
His voice broke slightly on the last words.
“That ends now.””
Rochelle stood frozen beneath the chandeliers, surrounded by guests who had once admired her composure and now witnessed the collapse of it.
Jalen turned toward the doors.
Behind him, his mother remained unable to answer.

For the first time in her life, Rochelle Whitmore had no explanation powerful enough to restore her authority.
And for the first time, the price of her pride was no longer something another person could be forced to pay.
