Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Everything
Samantha placed her handbag on the counter.
She didn't sit down.
Instead, she looked at Ethan.
"You told me this wouldn't happen.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"Not here.""
"Where, then? Your office? Another bank?""
Darius watched them carefully.
"Start talking.""
Samantha turned toward him.
"Ethan told me you had agreed to restructure the business.""
Darius held up the document.
"I didn't.""
"He said you wanted to reduce your personal financial exposure.""
"I didn't.""
"He said your mother had agreed to transfer her contribution into a new investment company.""
Lorraine shook her head.
"I never agreed to that.""
Samantha looked at her.
"I know.""
The room went silent.
Darius stepped closer.
"What do you mean, you know?""
Samantha swallowed.
"I saw the original bank receipt.""
"Where?""
"In Ethan's office.""
"Why?""
"Because I helped prepare the investment presentation.""
Darius looked toward Ethan.
"You told me you were handling the presentation yourself.""
Ethan interrupted.
"She's confused.""
Samantha turned sharply.
"No, Ethan. I'm not confused.""
She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.
"I kept copies of everything.""
Ethan moved toward her.
"Put that away.""
Samantha stepped back.
"Don't.""
Darius held out his hand.
"What is it?""
"Copies of the documents Ethan submitted to the investment group. The original transfer receipt. The ownership amendment. And the correspondence about your mother's contribution.""
Victoria approached.
"May I see them?""
Samantha nodded.
Victoria opened the envelope and began examining the papers.
The first document was an email from Ethan to Samantha.
It had been sent five weeks earlier.
The subject line read:
*Project Ownership Adjustment.*
Darius read the first paragraph.
Ethan had described a plan to classify the forty-thousand-dollar gift as an unsecured loan, then use the supposed debt to justify changing the ownership structure.
Another email discussed the lease transfer.
A third mentioned the bakery's opening day.
Darius stopped reading.
There was a sentence highlighted in yellow.
Keep Lorraine away from the investors until the ownership amendment is completed. She must not be allowed to challenge the original funding classification.
Darius looked at Ethan.
"You planned this weeks ago.""
Ethan shook his head.
"Those emails are out of context.""
Samantha let out a bitter laugh.
"Out of context? You told me we could take control of the bakery without Darius realizing what was happening.""
"Lower your voice.""
"No.""
Ethan grabbed the edge of the counter.
"Do you understand what you've done?""
Samantha looked at him.
"Yes. I finally stopped helping you.""
Darius turned toward her.
"Why did you help him in the first place?""
She hesitated.
Then she looked at Lorraine.
"Because he told me the bakery was failing.""
Darius frowned.
"It isn't.""
"I know that now.""
Ethan interrupted.
"She's trying to make herself look innocent.""
Samantha continued.
"He showed me financial statements claiming the business owed eighty-five thousand dollars to Cole Property Ventures. He said you had agreed to everything but were too distracted by opening preparations to sign the final documents.""
Darius looked at Victoria.
"Can you verify whether those loans exist?""
Victoria examined the paperwork.
"I can say that our group was given a statement listing them as liabilities. I cannot verify the actual transfers from these documents alone.""
Darius turned back.
"Where did the eighty-five thousand come from?""
Samantha opened another envelope.
"These.""
She handed him a set of printed bank records.
"They're transfers from the bakery's operating account to a company Ethan controls.""
Darius examined the dates.
Several payments had been made over four months.
The descriptions included vague entries such as consulting, property administration, and equipment services.
He recognized none of the companies.
"How much?"" he asked.
Samantha looked down.
"Altogether, eighty-five thousand.""
Darius felt his stomach drop.
"That's the money you said you invested?""
Ethan snapped.
"I provided services.""
"What services?""
"Business development. Financial planning. Property negotiations.""
"You charged my bakery eighty-five thousand dollars for services I never approved?""
Ethan spread his hands.
"We discussed operational expenses.""
"We discussed the bakery's operating expenses. Not payments to companies you own.""
Samantha placed another document on the counter.
"There's more.""
Ethan shook his head.
"Enough.""
She ignored him.
"This is the proposed lease assignment. Ethan intended to move the lease into Cole Property Ventures after the investment group released the new funding.""
Victoria looked up.
"That would have required additional authorization.""
"I know.""
Samantha looked at Darius.
"He intended to tell you it was temporary.""
Darius stared at the paperwork.
"And then?""
Samantha hesitated.
"He planned to sell the lease rights to another operator.""
Lorraine covered her mouth.
Darius slowly put the documents down.
"Why?""
Samantha looked at Ethan.
"Because he has debts.""
Ethan's face changed.
"Don't.""
She continued.
"He borrowed money against his property. His company has outstanding obligations. He needed cash quickly.""
Darius shook his head.
"So you decided to use my bakery?""
Ethan slammed his hand on the counter.
"I built this with you!""
Darius stared at him.
"You helped me.""
"I brought investors. I negotiated contracts. I put my money into this.""
"Where is the money?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Darius pointed toward the bank statements.
"Where are the eighty-five thousand dollars?""
Ethan's breathing became heavier.
"You have no idea what it takes to keep a business running.""
Darius stepped closer.
"I know what it takes to build one.""
He gestured toward the kitchen.
"I know what it takes to work twelve hours on your feet, test recipes until midnight, and spend your savings on equipment.""
Then he looked at his mother.
"And I know what it means when someone gives you everything they can because they believe in you.""
Lorraine lowered her eyes.
Samantha wiped her cheek.
"I didn't know about the fake signature at first," she said.
"When I realized what he was doing, I asked him to stop.""
Darius looked at her.
"When?""
"Last week.""
"And you waited until today?""
Samantha nodded.
"I was afraid.""
Lorraine spoke quietly.
"Afraid of what?""
Samantha looked at her.
"Of losing everything. My home. My marriage. The money we'd invested.""
Lorraine held her gaze.
"And what about what he was taking from my son?""
Samantha had no answer.
Ethan suddenly reached for the envelope.
"Give me that.""
Samantha pulled it away.
"No.""
He grabbed her wrist.
Darius immediately stepped between them.
"Let go.""
Ethan released her.
For a moment, the two men stood face-to-face.
Then Robert Miller cleared his throat.
"I think we should take a moment.""
Victoria closed the folder.
"All proposed transactions are on hold pending verification. I will also be reporting these discrepancies to our legal department.""
Ethan looked furious.
"You can't do that.""
"I can, and I will.""
Darius turned to Robert.
"Can you confirm that the lease remains in my company's name?""
"Yes. The proposed transfer has not been completed.""
Darius nodded.
"Please make sure nothing changes without written authorization from me.""
"Understood.""
For the first time that morning, Darius felt a small measure of relief.
The bakery was still his.
The doors were still open.
And his mother was sitting safely in the waiting area, no longer holding a dirty cloth.
But the damage wasn't over.
Maya approached with a tablet.
"Darius?""
He turned.
"Yes?""
"I found something in the office computer.""
"What?""
She looked nervous.
"An outgoing message scheduled for today.""
Darius took the tablet.
The message was addressed to the bakery's mailing list, several suppliers, and the invited investors.
Its subject line read:
*Leadership Transition Announcement.*
Darius opened it.
The message stated that, effective immediately, Ethan Cole would assume full operational control of the bakery.
It also said Darius had voluntarily stepped away to focus on personal matters.
Darius stared at the screen.
"I never approved this.""
Maya shook her head.
"I know. It was scheduled to send at noon.""
Darius checked the time.
11:58.
He looked at Ethan.
"Did you schedule this?""
Ethan said nothing.
Then Darius noticed the final paragraph.
It contained a statement explaining that Lorraine Hayes had no financial or ownership interest in the bakery and had been asked to stay away from business operations.
The message was scheduled to go out in less than two minutes.
Darius looked at Maya.
"Cancel it.""
She tapped the screen.
A warning appeared.
*This message is locked by administrator approval.*
Maya tried again.
The same warning appeared.
She looked up.
"I don't have permission.""
Darius turned toward Ethan.
"Unlock it.""
Ethan smiled faintly.
"You're not the only person with access to the system.""
Then his phone rang.
He answered without looking at the screen.
"Yes?""
A man's voice came through.
"Ethan, the announcement is ready. We just need your final approval.""
Darius stepped closer.
"Who is that?""
Ethan turned away.
"Send it.""
Darius lunged toward the counter.
But the message had already been released.
A notification appeared on the tablet.
<text color="secondary" weight="medium" size="xs">11:59 A.M. — MESSAGE SENT</text>
Maya stared at the screen.
Then she looked at Darius.
"It's gone.""
Darius slowly lowered his hand.
Outside, phones began lighting up.
Several guests opened the email.
One of the investors looked toward Darius with confusion.
May you like
And the bakery's official social media account suddenly displayed a new announcement.
*Ethan Cole Named Sole Managing Director of Hayes Bakery.*
