Chapter 3: The Name on the List

Darius read the words twice.

Lorraine Hayes.

Do Not Admit.

For a moment, the noise of the bakery seemed to disappear.

The espresso machine hissed behind him. Someone opened the front door, letting in a burst of warm air. A delivery driver rolled a cart across the pavement outside.

But Darius could only see his mother's name.

He turned the paper toward Kendra.

"Explain this.""

Kendra's face lost some of its color.

"It's an internal note.""

"About my mother?""

"I didn't know she was your mother.""

Darius looked at the page again.

"How did you know her full name?""

Kendra shifted her weight.

"I was given a list.""

"By whom?""

Troy stepped in.

"Darius, maybe we should take this to the office.""

Darius didn't look at him.

"Who gave her this list?""

Kendra folded her arms.

"I received it yesterday.""

"From whom?""

"I don't remember exactly.""

Darius gave a humorless laugh.

"You don't remember who told you not to admit someone into my bakery?""

Kendra's jaw tightened.

"It was probably an administrative instruction.""

"Probably?""

"Look, I was told to be careful about certain people coming in today.""

Lorraine sat quietly.

Her fingers rested on the gold ribbon around the cake box.

Darius turned toward her.

"Mom, have you ever met Kendra?""

Lorraine shook her head.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Have you ever spoken to her?""

"No.""

"Have you ever been here before today?""

"Only once, when the construction was still underway. I spoke with one of the contractors outside.""

Darius nodded slowly.

Then he turned back to Kendra.

"So why was my mother's name on a list?""

Kendra glanced toward Troy.

He immediately looked away.

That small movement didn't escape Darius.

"Did you know about this?"" Darius asked him.

Troy cleared his throat.

"I knew there was a visitor list.""

"Did you know my mother was on it?""

"I didn't look at every name.""

Darius held up the paper.

"Her name is written in capital letters.""

Troy shrugged.

"I wasn't responsible for guest management.""

Kendra snapped.

"Don't put this on me. You were the one who said we needed tighter security.""

Troy stared at her.

"I said we needed to control the staff entrance.""

"And you told me to watch for people who might cause problems.""

Darius slowly lowered the paper.

"People who might cause problems?""

Kendra looked uncomfortable.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Then tell me what you meant.""

She glanced toward Lorraine.

"I was given information that certain people might try to get close to you today.""

Darius frowned.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Who gave you that information?""

Kendra remained silent.

Lorraine finally spoke.

"Darius, perhaps we should leave it for now.""

He turned toward her.

"Mom, somebody put your name on a list and instructed my staff not to let you inside.""

"I know.""

"Doesn't that bother you?""

Lorraine looked down at the box.

"Of course it does.""

Her voice was gentle, but there was something firm beneath it.

"I just don't want to be the reason your special day becomes a disaster.""

Darius crouched beside her chair.

"You are the reason this day means anything to me.""

Lorraine's eyes filled.

He took her hand.

"You helped me build this place. You deserve to sit wherever you want.""

Kendra shifted uncomfortably.

Troy checked the clock.

"We really need to start the opening ceremony.""

Darius stood.

"Not until I understand what's happening.""

He walked toward the reception desk and picked up the visitor folder.

Kendra followed him.

"That folder contains private business information.""

"I'm the owner.""

"I know, but—"

"Then step aside.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were printed schedules, supplier contacts, a guest list, and several pages of handwritten instructions.

Darius turned through them.

Most were ordinary.

Then he found a sheet with a heading:

*GUEST ACCESS — MANAGEMENT DISCRETION*

Underneath were several names.

Some belonged to suppliers.

Others were investors.

And one belonged to Lorraine.

Beside her name was a short note.

*May attempt to use family connection to gain access. Refer to Kendra.*

Darius read it aloud.

Lorraine's face changed.

She looked at her son.

"Use a family connection?""

Darius stared at the paper.

"Who wrote this?""

Kendra shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You keep saying that.""

"Because I wasn't involved in making the list.""

"But you followed it.""

"I was doing my job.""

Darius turned toward her.

"Your job was to welcome people.""

Kendra raised her voice.

"My job was to protect your business!""

A silence fell across the waiting area.

Darius looked at her.

"From my mother?""

Kendra took a breath.

"From anyone who could cause a problem.""

Lorraine carefully placed one hand over the bakery box.

"I didn't come here asking for money, Kendra.""

Kendra looked at her.

"I never said you did.""

"I didn't come asking for a job.""

"I know.""

"I didn't even expect my son to stop working for me.""

Lorraine paused.

"I just wanted to give him something I made with my own hands.""

She lifted the lid slightly.

Inside, the lemon cakes were arranged in two neat rows. Each one had a tiny yellow flower on top.

Darius stared at them.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he noticed a folded piece of paper tucked beneath the ribbon.

"What's that, Mom?""

Lorraine looked surprised.

"Oh. That's nothing important.""

He gently removed it.

It was an old photograph.

Darius unfolded it.

The picture showed a younger Lorraine standing beside a small commercial kitchen. A little boy stood next to her, wearing an oversized apron and holding a wooden spoon.

Darius recognized the boy immediately.

It was him.

On the back, his mother's handwriting read:

For the boy who promised he'd make the world smell like fresh bread.

He swallowed.

"Mom...""

Lorraine smiled.

"I thought you might like it.""

Darius held the photograph carefully.

Then Maya approached from behind the counter.

"Excuse me, Darius.""

He turned.

"Yes?""

Maya looked nervous.

"I think you should see something.""

Kendra immediately stepped forward.

"Maya, we're busy.""

Maya ignored her.

"I found another page in the office printer.""

She held out a sheet of paper.

Darius took it.

It was a message printed from an internal email.

The subject line read:

*Opening Day — Family Access Instructions.*

He scanned the first few lines.

Then his eyes stopped.

The message instructed staff to keep Lorraine away from the front of the bakery until after the opening ceremony.

It also stated that she should not be allowed to speak with the invited guests.

Darius looked up.

"Who sent this?""

Maya hesitated.

"I don't know. It was printed with the other staff instructions.""

Darius turned the page.

At the bottom was a name.

Not Kendra's.

Not Troy's.

It was the name of someone Darius trusted with the business's most important decisions.

His business partner.

*Ethan Cole.*

Darius stared at the signature.

Kendra's expression changed when she saw it.

Troy stepped closer.

And Lorraine, who had remained silent throughout the confrontation, finally spoke.

"Darling...""

Darius looked at her.

She took a slow breath.

"There's something I think you should know about Ethan.""

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

"What is it, Mom?""

Lorraine looked at the printed email.

Then she looked directly at her son.

"I saw him yesterday.""

Darius frowned.

"Where?""

Lorraine's fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.

"At the bank.""

She paused.

"He wasn't there to discuss your bakery.""

Her voice dropped.

"He was asking questions about the money I gave you.""

Darius looked down at the email again.

May you like

And suddenly, the question was no longer why Kendra had treated his mother like an unwanted visitor.

It was why his business partner had gone to such lengths to keep her away.
