Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Closed Door
Vanessa remained frozen beside the dining table for several seconds after Marcus finished speaking.
Then she blinked, drew a sharp breath, and reached for the only defense she had left.
"You cannot talk to me like I'm some criminal in front of these children.""
Marcus didn't raise his voice.
"Then stop giving me reasons to question what you've been doing when I'm not home.""
Her face flushed.
Kayla stood near her chair, her hands clasped tightly together. Brielle had moved away from her plate and was watching the adults with wide, uncertain eyes. Nia remained beside her father, still wearing the same oversized white shirt, her gaze fixed on the floor.
Vanessa looked around the room as if she expected someone to intervene on her behalf.
Nobody did.
"This is unbelievable," she muttered.
"I've spent years trying to make this family work, and one little incident turns me into the villain.""
Marcus glanced at the bowl of rice on the table.
"One little incident?""
Vanessa followed his eyes.
For a moment, she seemed to realize that the bowl had become a witness she couldn't silence.
She folded her arms.
"Fine. I shouldn't have made her stand there. Are you satisfied?""
Nia's head lifted slightly.
Marcus didn't soften.
"No. I'm not.""
"What else do you want from me?""
"The truth.""
"I gave you the truth.""
"You gave me a version that makes you look reasonable.""
Vanessa scoffed.
"Of course. Because your daughter could never do anything wrong.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Nobody said that. Children make mistakes. They need guidance. But you don't get to humiliate a child and call it guidance.""
"I did not humiliate her.""
"Then why was she crying?""
Vanessa opened her mouth, but Marcus continued before she could answer.
"Why did she look terrified when I asked her a question? Why did Kayla feel she needed to show me something on her phone? And why did your whole attitude change the moment I started reading it?""
Vanessa's gaze darted toward the silver phone.
That small movement answered something Marcus had not yet asked.
He picked it up from the table.
"Kayla, I need to understand what you showed me.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"She has no right to share private conversations.""
Kayla flinched.
Marcus turned toward his stepdaughter.
"Nobody is going to punish you for telling me what you know. I need you to be honest, and I need you to tell me what you personally saw.""
Kayla looked at her mother.
Vanessa's stare was sharp enough to make her shoulders stiffen.
"Kayla," Vanessa warned.
Marcus's voice became firm.
"Vanessa, don't.""
For a moment, neither woman moved.
Then Kayla swallowed and spoke.
"It wasn't just tonight.""
The words were quiet, but they seemed to drain the remaining color from Vanessa's face.
Marcus looked at Kayla.
"What wasn't just tonight?""
"The food. The way Mom treats Nia when you're gone.""
Nia's fingers curled into the fabric of her shirt.
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's a lie.""
Kayla's eyes filled with tears.
"No, it isn't.""
"You're twisting things because you don't like being disciplined either.""
"I'm not talking about me!""
Kayla's voice cracked.
"I'm talking about Nia!""
The sudden outburst silenced the room.
Brielle began to cry softly.
Vanessa immediately turned toward her younger daughter.
"See what you've done? Look at your sister!""
Marcus stepped between Vanessa and the girls.
"Enough.""
His voice was so forceful that Vanessa stopped mid-sentence.
He looked at Brielle.
"Sweetheart, you're not in trouble. Nobody is angry with you for being upset.""
Brielle wiped her cheeks with both hands.
"I don't want everybody fighting.""
Marcus's expression softened.
"I know, baby. But sometimes we have to talk about something difficult before we can make it right.""
He turned back to Kayla.
"What do you mean when you say it wasn't just tonight?""
Kayla took a shaky breath.
"Sometimes Nia has to eat after we finish. Sometimes Mom tells her she doesn't deserve the same things we get because she isn't her daughter.""
Vanessa recoiled.
"I never said that!""
Kayla looked directly at her.
"You did.""
"Watch yourself.""
"You said Daddy would always choose Nia over us, so you had to make sure we knew who was in charge.""
Marcus went completely still.
The sentence seemed to strike him somewhere deeper than the argument about dinner.
He slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you say that?""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"That is not what I meant.""
"What did you mean?""
"I was trying to teach Kayla and Brielle not to let Nia push them around.""
"By telling them I would choose my own daughter over them?""
"No! By explaining that this family needs balance.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Balance doesn't mean making one child feel smaller so the others can feel important.""
Vanessa's composure began to crack.
"You don't understand what it's like to manage three girls all day.""
"Then explain it to me. Tell me what you're struggling with. Ask me for help. But don't use my daughter as an outlet for your frustration.""
"I have been asking for help!""
"When?""
"Every time I tell you Nia is difficult!""
Marcus stared at her.
"Complaining about a twelve-year-old isn't the same as asking for help.""
Vanessa turned away, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
She had expected Marcus to be angry. She had expected him to question her, perhaps even demand an apology. But she had not expected Kayla to stand against her, nor had she anticipated that the details she had kept separate would begin connecting in front of everyone.
She looked toward the staircase.
"I need a moment.""
"No," Marcus said.
"You need to answer the questions you've been avoiding.""
Her head snapped around.
"You're not going to interrogate me in my own home!""
Marcus's eyes hardened.
"Our home. And my daughter lives here, too.""
He gestured toward the dining room.
"She should never have been made to feel like she was borrowing space in her own family.""
Nia's face crumpled.
She pressed both hands over her mouth, trying to contain a sob.
Marcus immediately turned toward her.
"Hey, baby.""
She shook her head, tears spilling between her fingers.
"I'm sorry, Daddy.""
The words stopped him cold.
He crossed the space between them and lowered himself until he was looking directly into her eyes.
"What are you sorry for?""
Nia couldn't answer.
She tried, but her breath caught, and her shoulders began shaking.
Marcus gently drew her into his arms.
"You don't have to apologize.""
She buried her face against his suit.
"I'm sorry you came home and everybody was fighting.""
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, Vanessa was watching them with an expression that shifted between resentment and alarm.
Marcus held Nia a little closer.
"Listen to me, sweetheart. You did not cause this. You hear me? You didn't cause any of it.""
Nia nodded against his chest.
"None of this is your fault.""
He stayed there until her breathing began to settle.
Then he rose, keeping one arm around his daughter.
His eyes returned to Vanessa.
"I want you to tell me everything that has been happening. No blaming Nia. No changing the subject. No telling me what you think I want to hear.""
Vanessa's lips pressed together.
"And if I refuse?""
Marcus glanced toward the stairs, then back at her.
"Then I'll have to make decisions based on what I've already learned.""
For the first time, Vanessa seemed to understand that her husband was no longer asking permission to take the situation seriously.
May you like
He was preparing to act.
And she had no idea how much damage her own daughters were willing to reveal.
