Chapter 7: The Signature That Changed Everything
For several seconds, Maya couldn't move.
She stood on the front porch, staring at Andre as though he had just announced that the sky had fallen. Beside her, Chris's expression had gone completely blank.
“Say that again,” Chris said.
Andre tightened his grip on his phone.
“Denise says someone else authorized a payment from the college account. She claims it was you.””
“You're repeating an accusation from a woman none of us has even spoken to directly?””
“She says she has documentation.””
“Then let her produce it.””
Andre glanced at Maya.
“I'm not saying I believe her. I'm telling you what she said.””
Chris stepped closer.
“And you're telling Maya before you've verified a single fact?””
“Because her money is involved!””
“So is my name!””
“Enough!”” Maya shouted.
Both men stopped.
She pressed her hands against her temples, fighting the tears gathering behind her eyes.
“Yesterday, I found out Mom took money from my college account. Then I found out Andre knew about some of it. Now a woman I've never met is saying Chris took money, too. How am I supposed to believe any of you?””
Neither man answered.
Maya looked at Chris.
“Did you authorize a payment from my account?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“Did you ever give Mom permission to use that money for anything other than my education?””
“No.””
“Did you sign any document that allowed somebody else to access it?””
Chris hesitated.
It lasted barely a second, but Maya noticed.
“What?”” she demanded.
“I signed documents when we established the account. Your mother and I were both involved in setting it up.””
“Then could you have authorized the payment without remembering?””
“No. Not the way the account was structured.””
Andre folded his arms.
“How can you be certain?””
“Because I know what I signed.””
Maya felt her stomach tighten.
“Then show me.””
Chris nodded.
“That's fair.””
He went inside to retrieve the original account paperwork. Maya remained on the porch with Andre, who seemed to be struggling to find something comforting to say.
Finally, he spoke.
“I know this is hard.””
Maya turned toward him.
“You don't get to say that like you understand. You weren't here for any of it.””
Andre looked down.
“You're right.””
She hadn't expected him to agree so quickly.
He continued, “I can't undo the years I missed. I can't pretend a few conversations make me the father you needed. But I can stop making excuses now.””
Maya folded her arms.
“Why didn't you tell me about the money before?””
“Because your mother asked me to give her time. She said she'd repay me and replace what she'd taken before you needed it.””
“And you believed her?””
“I wanted to.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“No,” Andre admitted.
“It isn't.””
Chris returned with a thick blue folder and several bank documents. He placed them on the porch table.
“Here are the original account-opening papers, the authorization forms, and the statements I have.””
Maya sat down.
Chris opened the folder and showed her the signatures.
His signature appeared on the original account agreement, along with Natasha's. Both had been authorized to make transactions, but the account required additional verification for transfers above a specified amount.
Maya pointed to the relevant paragraph.
“What does this mean?””
“It means neither of us could transfer a large amount without completing the bank's verification process,” Chris explained.
“The bank would have a record of who initiated the transaction and how it was approved.””
Andre leaned over the table.
“So if Denise claims Chris authorized a payment, the bank should be able to verify it.””
“Exactly.””
Maya looked at the statements.
“Then why are we arguing? Let's call the bank.””
Chris glanced at the time.
“They'll need to verify our identities, and we may have to make an appointment to obtain the full transaction records. We can start now, but we should do it properly.””
“Then do it.””
They spent the next forty minutes calling the bank, answering security questions, and requesting the records associated with the disputed transfers. The representative explained that some transactions could be reviewed immediately, while others required a formal investigation because the account holders disputed authorization.
Chris asked for written confirmation of the request.
Maya watched him carefully.
He didn't become defensive. He didn't tell her to trust him. He simply answered the representative's questions and asked what evidence the bank would need.
When the call ended, Chris wrote down the case number.
“We should also contact the institution holding the account to make sure no further withdrawals happen while the review is underway,” he said.
Maya nodded.
For the first time in days, there was something concrete they could do.
Then Andre's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
“It's Denise.””
Maya's pulse quickened.
“Put it on speaker.””
Andre answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through, strained and impatient.
“Have you looked at the documents I sent?””
“Yes,” Andre replied.
“You said Chris authorized one of the payments. I want to know exactly what evidence you have.””
“I sent you the transaction record.””
“You sent me a summary. I need the original authorization.””
There was a pause.
“I don't have access to the bank's internal records anymore.””
“Then how do you know Chris authorized it?””
“I saw his name on the paperwork.””
Chris leaned toward the phone.
“My name appears on the original account agreement because I'm one of the account holders. That doesn't prove I authorized a particular transfer.””
Denise went quiet.
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“You knew Chris was one of the account holders before you accused him, didn't you?””
“I knew his name was on the paperwork.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Denise exhaled sharply.
“Look, I'm not trying to ruin anybody's life. Natasha asked me to help her with a business venture, and I agreed. The money came through accounts she controlled. I assumed she had permission to use it.””
“Then why did you tell Andre that Chris authorized a payment?”” Maya asked.
“I said his name appeared on the documentation. I never said I personally watched him authorize anything.””
Andre looked at Chris.
Chris's jaw tightened.
“You told Andre that I was involved. You knew he would repeat that to Maya.””
“I told him what I saw.””
“No,” Maya said.
“You told him something that made it sound like Chris stole my money.””
Denise's voice grew defensive.
“I have my own problems. I was trying to get my money back.””
“Then tell the truth about what happened,” Chris replied.
“I've told you what I know.””
“Then send us the original documents, including every record showing where the money went.””
“I'll have to look.””
“Please do.””
The call ended.
Maya stared at Andre.
“Do you believe Chris did it?””
Andre rubbed his forehead.
“I don't know.””
Chris slowly closed the folder.
“At least that's an honest answer.””
Andre's face reddened.
“I'm trying to figure this out.””
“So am I. But you don't get to throw accusations at me and call it concern for Maya.””
Maya watched them, feeling the familiar pressure building again.
“Stop,” she said quietly.
Both men turned.
“I don't need either of you defending yourselves by attacking the other. I need facts.””
Chris nodded.
“Then that's what we'll get.””
Andre agreed.
But the uneasy silence that followed made Maya realize how fragile trust had become. Even the people who genuinely wanted to help her could cause damage when they acted on incomplete information.
That evening, Natasha finally emerged from the bedroom where she had spent most of the afternoon.
She found Maya at the dining table, reviewing the account statements.
“What are you doing?”” Natasha asked.
“Trying to understand where my money went.””
Natasha sat across from her.
“Maya, please. I know I've made mistakes, but I never wanted to hurt you.””
Maya kept her eyes on the paperwork.
“Did you tell Denise that Chris authorized a payment?””
Natasha's face changed.
“Who told you that?””
“Denise.””
Her mother looked toward the hallway.
“I told Denise Chris knew about the account.””
“Did he?””
Natasha didn't answer.
Maya pushed the papers aside.
“Mom, I need a yes or no.””
“I thought he knew about the transfers.””
“Did you ask him?””
Natasha's eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
Maya leaned back.
“So you told Denise he knew, even though you never asked him.””
“I thought I could replace the money before he found out.””
“And when you couldn't, you let everybody believe he might have taken it?””
“I never said Chris stole anything!””
“You let Andre believe he was involved!””
Natasha covered her face.
“I was desperate.””
Maya stood.
“Desperation doesn't make it okay to lie about somebody.””
She walked toward the stairs, but her mother called after her.
“Maya, wait. There's something else you need to know.””
Maya stopped.
Natasha stood with trembling hands.
“The money Denise received wasn't all for the business.””
Maya slowly turned around.
“What does that mean?””
Her mother swallowed.
“Some of it went toward paying off a debt. A debt I had before I met Chris.””
Maya stared at her.
“How much?””
Natasha whispered the amount.
It was significantly more than the eight thousand dollars already missing from the college account.
Maya gripped the banister.
“Where did the rest come from?””
Natasha looked at the floor.
“I borrowed against something else.””
“What?””
Her mother lifted her eyes.
“The house.””
Maya felt the air leave her lungs.
The home where she had grown up, the place she had believed was secure, had become part of the secret too.
And before Maya could ask another question, Chris appeared in the hallway behind Natasha.
He had heard everything.
“Natasha,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, “tell me you didn't put our house at risk without telling me.””
Natasha began to cry.
May you like
She couldn't answer.
And that silence told Maya the truth was far bigger than the missing college money.
